1. Scope
The scope of this report is to provide information on the cores given by the IODC to
NOV to evaluate some basic rock parameters to aid in finding an representative analogue
rock for further development of drilling technologies.
Test Objective
Three core samples were provided to study the UCS (Unconfined Strength) of the
rock as a basis to find a suitable, easier to obtain, rock for possible continued drilling
technology development.

Notes:
-The HV W Faroe Basalt was very tough to drill although not abrasive in nature.
This is an Atlantic ridge Basalt included for comparison of how test data will
correlate to a more global perspective concerning drilling research.
-Possible Analogues are preliminary & need further evaluation to find best match.

3. Core Lab Grain Pictures

Some high resolution photos were taken to help understand the grain size and
boundary of this rock type and is recorded in this section. Sample photos were taken
of both Run 13 and Run 14 samples.
Fig-Sect 3-1 Run 13 Sample

Pictures of the grains are preserved to compare against analogues and also provide
insight into better means of determining the best means to fail the formation during
drilling. While the best means has yet to be fully determined these photos provide clues
to aid in that evaluation.

Fig-Sect 3-2 EDX Spectrum Survey Run 12 Sample

A sample piece from Run 12 was mounted and polished to perform EDX spectrum
survey for the basic purpose of information collection. There is yet no drilling
correlation to Basalt make-up and drillibility but has been discussed at various levels
throughout the years. Since the work was completed it is included to fully document
testing accomplished with the provided core materials.
