Year 8:

It has been two years since Japanese was offered as a language to Year 8 students. The
achievement results and retention to Year 9 rates have improved from the first year.

97.2% of students achieved the language skills (It was 88% in 2014)

20% retention rate (It was 18% in 2014)

The focus for 2016 is to increase the achievement of Pacifika students and retention rates
by:

reviewing the Year 8 Japanese course and co-constructing specific targets for 2016

differentiating weaker students in terms of teaching, learning and assessment

activities that engage young learners of Japanese.

Mori achievement:

10 Mori students were identified in Year 8

Japanese classes. The achievement results were
pleasing. 100% of students achieved the language
skills and their reading skills were particularly
impressive as 50% achieved Excellence. The
focus for 2016 is to improve the speaking skills by
differentiating tasks.

Pasifika achievement:

One of the two Pasifika students only achieved

the reading skills. The focus for 2016 is to improve
their other language skills by differentiating tasks.

Results linked to 2015 targets:

The target for 2015 was increasing the retention

rate to 25% from current rate of 18%. This target
was not met with 20% of retention rate.

Another target for 2015 was to raise reading achievement result to 90% from the
current rate of 80%. This target was met with 98% of students achieving the
Japanese reading skills.

Year 9:

Over all the skills, 46% of students achieved with Excellence

57% of students achieved Excellence in conversation skills and these skills reflected
by their practice at the beginning of each lessons

Gaining vocabulary and reading the Japanese alphabet are keys to success.

Students who did not achieve the writing skills failed to master the Japanese
alphabet.

Mori achievement:

One Mori student was identified in Year 9 Japanese in 2015 who is also top of the
Year 9 priority learners list. Although a differentiated programme was created for the
student, the results were disappointing. The student achieved only in conversation
skills.

well in all language skills except the listening skills.

Results linked to 2015 targets:

The target for 2015 was for 100% of students to achieve in all skills by Term 4 and
continue effective scaffolding strategies so that students learn hiragana. This target
was not met as 80% of students achieved in all language skills by Term 4. Better
scaffolding and differentiation to learn hiragana and vocabulary are keys to success.

Year 10

Overall 32% students achieved Excellence in all language skills in Term 4.

In writing, the number of students who achieved with Excellence increased from 27%
in Term 2 to 40% in Term 4.

Scholarship:
Two students sat for the scholarship examination, but unfortunately they did not achieve.
Their marks were 13 and 12 out of 24marks. It is quite hard for students to compete with the
Japanese native speakers for their speech and writing. New Zealand Association of
Japanese Language Teachers (NZAJLT) keep approaching NZQA to differentiate the
assessment by categorizing the different language backgrounds of each student which
would bring it into line with the Australian curriculum.
Intended targets for 2016:
1) Level 1: The target for 2016 is to ensure all students continue to pass all standards.
2) Level 2: The target for 2016 is to ensure all students continue to pass all standards.
3) Level 3: The target for 2016 is to ensure all students continue to pass all standards.
4) Year 8: The target for 2016 is increasing a retention rate to 25% from current of 21% and
better Pacifika students achievement rate from 50% to 70%.
5) Year 9: The target for 2016 is for 90% of students to achieve in all skills by Term 4 from
current 80% and continue effective scaffolding strategies so that students learn hiragana.
6) Year 10: The target for 2016 is to increase the numbers of students achieve in writing
skills from 60% to 80% by Term 4.
Areas for improvement:
Better scaffolding and differentiating for junior classes.
Promoting Japanese languages to Mori and Pasifika parents/whnau.
Strategies to help Low Achievers:
Better use of data to identify weaker students, specifically the use of formative assessment
on monthly tasks. Using this data the teacher would be better able to scaffold each task and
give ongoing specific feedback to improve student outcomes.
Provisions for challenging more able students:
Differentiation of classroom tasks to extend the more able students. By using Google
classrooms and Kaizena, and providing extra tasks for advanced students.
Use of Technology:
NCEA requires an extensive use of technology. Students have to have access to computer
technology in the classroom so that they can write Japanese and listen to their own
language production. They need to be using technology both to communicate and record
their Japanese language. The Japanese department provides students Languages online
courses and language learning programmes such as Quizlet, Go vocab, Marugoto and
9

teacher can monitor students progress. These programmes help students learn by using
technology. Students also use their own devices to research information relevant to each
topic.
