Introduction (Essential Question): How will students describe characters, settings and major events in a
story, using key details to show understanding?
Standard: Reading
Cluster: Key Ideas and Details
Objective: ELA.1.R.C1.3- Students will describe characters, settings and major events in a
story, using key details in literary texts.
Specific Objective: By the end of the lesson students will show understanding of how to
describe characters, setting, and major events in the story using its key details by the
fulfillment of the attached graphic organizer.

Method(s): Students will learn through listening, discussion, whole class work, and hands on
participation.
Materials:

Elmo/Image Mate
Arthurs Eyes by Marc Brown

Direct Instruction: This section will be for whole group instruction. To begin, students will be sat on the
carpet at the front of the room. The instructor will begin by showing the students the cover of the book
and reading the title to them. The instructor will then ask the students what they think the story may be
about. The students will raise their hands and a few will be called on to answer. After a few of the
students are called on to answer, then the instructor will proceed with reading the book. The instructor
may stop along the way to ask questions if he/she wishes. This is to help the students understand the text
better.
Guided Practice: For guided practice, students will be asked to return to their seats and then they will be
given a graphic organizer to fill out. The students will then proceed to fill out the graphic organizer with
the aid of the instructor. The students will answer questions about the story given out by the instructor,
and then they will answer by raising their hand and filling in the graphic organizer. The instructor will
use the image mate in order to show the whole class how to fill out the graphic organizer.
Differentiation:
Tier 3: Tier 3 students will be with the whole class as will the rest of the students. If the students have
trouble, then they will raise their hands to indicate that they need help as necessary.
Tier 2: Tier 2 students will also be with the whole class and will raise their hands if they need help
understanding the assignment.
Tier 1: Tier 1 students will raise their hand if they need help for the project and if they finish early then
they may color or work on a previous assignment that was not finished earlier.

Adaptations for Different Types of Learners

Visual Learners: The reading of Arthurs Eyes with the whole class will be the adaptation for them.
Since they learn the best from seeing, the pictures will help them to understand better. Also, the use of
the image mate to show the class how to fill out the graphic organizer will help them to learn as well.
Auditory Learners: Since the book will be read aloud to the students the hearing of the words from the
instructor will be helpful to the auditory learners as well as the instructions for the lesson activity.
Read-Write Learners: Read-Write learners will benefit from writing when they write to fill in the
graphic organizer. Since they will be writing to fill in the organizer, but also reading as the instructor
helps them, this will benefit them the most.
Kinesthetic Learners: Kinesthetic learners will benefit from moving around the room as they move from
the carpet to their desks, and they will also benefit from coloring with the crayons when they are finished
filling in the graphic organizer as well as and feeling the paper and pencil as they write.

Lesson Closure: The purpose of this lesson is to get students to understand the concept of describing
characters, settings and major events in a story, using key details in literary texts. The secondary
purpose of this lesson is to teach students about character education through the use of the book and the
questions that will be asked.
Independent Practice: For independent practice students will be given a set of directions in order to fill
out the attached graphic organizer. The instructions will be read aloud by the instructor and the students
will follow along. If they follow along and fulfill the activity they will receive a passing grade. If they fail
to listen or fail to do the work, then they will not pass. If they listen and work, but fail to get done, they
will have an opportunity to finish the work at a later time.
Assessment: Students will be assessed by their fulfillment of the activity that follows the lesson. To
achieve completion of the assignment students must complete the activity following the reading of the
book. This will be achieved by adequately following the given directions and then completing the graphic
organizer. If students finish they may color or work on assignments that were previously not finished. If
they do not finish they will be given an opportunity to finish later. Failure or refusal to complete the
assignment will result in an unsatisfactory grade.
Lesson Reflection:
How I would teach this lesson differently next time.
1. I read the book all the way through, and kept the students attention; however I could have asked the
concepts of them as I read the book to reinforce it with them so that they understood the assignment. The
concepts were main characters, setting, and main events. If I had gone over them as I read it would have
helped them to understand better.
2. I had to keep telling each individual student how to do the graphic organizer and if I went over it
during the reading, it wouldnt have been such an issue.
3. I had to finish my math during this time as well, because I didnt get to it during the math time. I did
the lesson in a right amount of time, but I had a difficult time because they kept asking me the same thing
over. So I had to explain it to them a lot and wouldnt had to if I explained it better and as I went along.
