BFC21403 Structural Analysis

Project instruction:
This project will contribute to 20% of total coursework.
This project must be carried out by group of maximum five (5) members.

1.0 Introduction
A project of double story Art Gallery Building (including parking space on the roof top) will be developed
in Parit Raja, Batu Pahat, Johor. As appointed structural engineering consultant, your team are ordered
to prepare the preliminary design with suitable structural solutions and completed structural analysis.
All these works will be compiled for a report that should have the following scopes:
a) A description of structural arrangements and layout of the building. The layout must be build in 3D
while plan and view elevations (front and side) in 2D. The description of the structural arrangement
must also explain (with particular layout) how lateral loads are transferred from upper part of
building to the foundations.
b) A clear recommendation to the client about the selected structures scheme with significant reasons.
c) A detailed structural analysis for the building focusing on the truss, frame, continuous beam and
influence line. The analysis method must be explained with significant reasons. All assumptions
employ in the structural analysis should satisfy the design requirement and must be explained in
detail.

2.0 Details of the project

a) Site: The building will be constructed for Art Gallery Building including office area in the second floor
and the parking space on the roof top. The allocated area is in Parit Raja, Batu Pahat, Johor. Figure
2.1 below illustrates the plan view of two-story Gallery building. The building is 18 m x 10 m in plan
and the height of each floor must not more than 4m.

b) Preliminary design: the proposed design and selected structural scheme must be produced using but
not limited to CAD system or Google SketchUp. The design should include 3D full structure, plan and
elevation layouts. Please refer Figure 2.2 for example of 3D full structure layout.
c) Analysis: Analysis of the building must include all part of structure systems; truss, frame, beam and
analysis of influence line with detailed calculation and drawing. All possible methods that discuss in
the class must be used to complete this project.

3.0 Report submission

a) Report should include the illustration of 3D building, all information/parameters, drawing of
idealised structure and structure plan arrangement, complete analysis and summary. A group
presentation/interview will be held upon the submission of the report.
b) Report must be compiled and submitted in Microsoft Word format.
c) Computer drawings using a CAD system are highly encouraged.

4.0 Important date

If the project is submitted late without sufficient cause, a penalty shall be applied. A deduction of
15% of the maximum mark available from the actual mark achieved by the group shall be imposed
upon expiry of the deadline. A further deduction of 5% of the maximum mark available from the
actual achieved by the group shall then be imposed of the next subsequence working days.
