It is the beginning of September and the Wild Rice harvest is beginning for your 7-8
person family clan. You have just done a big move from the Manitoba plains into the
wetlands of South West Ontario. The move has left your clan members tired, angry,
and very, very hungry. As a clan you must begin to harvest the wild rice planted in
the wetlands as traditional members would. (Pg. 24)..A problem arises within the
clan however. One of the men claims he has an injured leg and wants to harvest
rice in a birch canoe with his daughter. His wife remains skeptical of him and

Due Date: October 14th

believes he is just being lazy and does not want to trap wildlife with the other men.
Traditionally this is not allowed, it breaks the World View of Respect, Truth, and
Bravery. Your problem that needs to be solved is how can the situation be resolved
as peacefully as possible?

END GOAL FOR DAY ONE

Possible options or starting points could be;

1) Hold a family clan court where the Loons and Cranes act as a judge and
take a majority vote of the other clan members. If you decide to do this you
must actually perform a vote and the votes are submitted with this
assignment to Mr. Niwa. Mr. Niwa must be physically present during the trial
for you to receive full marks. (20 TOTAL MARKS)
2) Banish the man for breaking the World Views of the Anishinabe Tribe. You
must realize that banishment was not taken lightly and is equal to modern
day Death Penalties. If this is your final decision the Loon/Crane must write a
decision statement on paper (1 paragraph long) about why banishment was
the only choice. You will be marked on length, appropriate words used,
decision made, and convincing final statement. (20 TOTAL MARKS)
3) Have the Man prove his injury with a special treatment by a Spiritual Leader
(Done by the Bird). If the Bird decided he is injured, your tribe must
perform a healing ceremony and write out a single paragraph talking about
the routine/ceremony. If the Bird decides he is not injured and faked his injury
the bird must write a one paragraph (17 Lines) prayer for his soul to not be
harmed for breaking the 7 World Views. You will be marked on correct length
of writing (17 Lines), appropriate words used, quality of prayer/decision,
reference to your family clans decision. (20 TOTAL MARKS)
4) Forgive the Man completely and let him rest during the Harvest and Hunt.
This is perhaps the easy route to decide on however will require more writing.
If this is your family clans final decision you must all submit a work journal
that is 7-8 paragraphs total (one from each member, each one is worth 10
Marks). If you chose this as a final decision then you need to submit the 7
journal entries as well as this booklet. Each entry must be one paragraph or
17 lines in length, must speak about a specific month in the Cycle of Time
found on page 22. You are to speak about what life is like trying to catch
game or harvest rice depending on your whether you identify as male or
female. If you make this a joke you will get zero, your group will lose
10 marks. For the purpose of this assignment we are talking male or
female. Female harvests, males hunt. (70 TOTAL MARKS)
5) Other; come talk to Mr. Niwa for a suitable assignment task if none of these
sound appealing.
