CHAPTER 3
RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
This chapter presents the research design, participants, data gathering procedures,
instrumentation, and data analysis that were utilized in the empirical phase of the study.
Research Design
This study will utilize descriptive-correlational survey method. A descriptivecorrelational research describes the phenomena being studied without changing the
subject of the study and will determine the relationship among two or more variables
(Lomax & Li, 2013).
Participants
The respondents will be the employed workers of CPAC cafeteria, officially listed
in the institutions records as student workers presently enrolled in this second semester
of the college year 2015 to 2016. Eligibility criterion includes: (1) officially listed as a
student worker in CPAC, (2) 17 personnel who is working in the schools cafeteria and is
capable of handling food, (3) able to submit stool sample for stool analysis, and (4) is
able to answer questionnaire.
Instruments
This study will be utilizing a 25-item questionnaire formulated by the researcher
which is based on Boot and Cairncross (1993) behavioral domains for hygiene. The
materials used in this study are: (1) Microscope will be used to magnify objects
invisible to the naked eye (Dictionary.com, 2005), (2) Microscope Slide a small flat

20

rectangular piece of glass on which specimens can be mounted for microscopic study
(The Free Dictionary, 2016), (3) Cover slips, (4) Sodium Chloride Solution in small
bottle with pipette, (5) Wooden Stick, (6) Gloves, and (7) Fresh Stool is a solid waste
that is realesed from the body (Merriam-Webster.com, 2015).
Procedures
Data Gathering. In the pursuit of this study, the researcher will follow the following
steps:
Step 1: Will seek approval from the panel, and school dean, and food services
department, Step 2: will seek approval from the coordinator/manager of the facility where
the study will be conducted, Step 3: will collect data properly using the survey
questionnaire, Step 4: will gather stool sample for stool analysis, Step 5: will analyze
gathered data, and Step 6: will prepare for presentation.
Data Analysis
Information that will be collected will be tallied and computed using SPSS to get
the descriptive statistical data results like the mean of each dimension. The researcher
will then group the mean scores according to profile characteristics. Results will then be
discussed as premised on the objectives of the study.
In analyzing data, Pearson-r method will be utilized. Pearsons correlation
coefficient (r) is a measure of strength of the association between two variables
(University of the West of England, 2016). Basically, a Pearson product-moment
correlation attempts to draw line of best fit through the data of two variables, and the
Pearson correlation coefficient, r, indicates how far away all these data points are this line

21

of best fit (Lund Research Ltd, 2013). The independent-samples-t-test (or independent ttest) will also be utilized in this study. Independent t-test, according to Laerd Statistics
(2013), compares the mean between two unrelated groups on the same continuous,
independent variable.
