4 Context of the Organization
4.1 Understanding the Organization & our context
This new concept relates to the factors and conditions affecting organizational operation e.g. regulation,
governance and stakeholders.
4.2 Understanding the needs and expectations of interested parties
Consideration to who the interested parties might be and what their relevant interests might be, e.g.
customers, shareholders, board members, competitors, regulators
6 Planning for the QMS
6.1 Actions to address risks and opportunities
Organizations must determine its context, and the arising risks and opportunities. Actions to address risk
must be proportional to the potential impact.
7 Support
7.1.6 Organizational knowledge
It could be intellectual e.g. design or software and external sources of knowledge e.g. academia or
conferences
8 Operation
8.3.1 General
This new clause mandates the introduction of a design and development process where this activity is
required.
10 Improvement
10.1 General
Proactive improvement must be sought, and this may be as a result of corrective action, innovation
or reorganization.
The requirement for a documented preventive action procedure is deleted.

4.1 Understanding the Organization & our context
This new concept relates to the factors and conditions affecting organizational operation e.g. regulation,
governance and environmental conditions.
4.2 Understanding the needs and expectations of interested parties
Environmental conditions are the elements of the environment which can be affected by the
organisation (air quality, water quality, land use, etc.), or those which can affect the organisation
(climate change, existing land contamination, etc.).
Consideration should be given to who the interested parties might be and what their relevant
interests might be, e.g. employees, neighbors, customers, shareholders, board members,
competitors, regulators, etc.
5 Leadership
5.1 Leadership & Commitment
Top management of the organisation are now required to demonstrate leadership and commitment to
the EMS in a number of specified
ways.
6 Planning
6.1.1 General
Consideration needs to be given to identified internal and external issues (4.1) and the needs and
expectations of interested parties (4.2).
6.1.4 Risk associated with threats and opportunities
This is a new concept which requires the identification of the risk (defined as the effect of uncertainty on
objectives) associated with threats and opportunities that need to be addressed, whilst maintaining
documented information on these.
6.1.5 Planning to take action
The organisation needs to plan to take actions to address risk associated with threats and opportunities,
significant environmental aspects, and compliance obligations.

10.2 Continual Improvement
The Environmental Management System needs to be continually improved in order to enhance
environmental performance.
