Ammon and

Missionary Work
Scripture
Read the story with the flannel board figures below. Print, cut out and laminate
them. Then try to complete the picture story below. Cut the two halves out, tape
together on the back side and then laminate.

Ammon was one of the four sons of Mosiah. The Lord commanded
Ammon and his brothers to teach the Lamanites the Gospel. Ammon
and his brothers separated and each brother went to a different city.
Ammon went to the city of Ishmael. The Lamanites did not like the
Nephites. They tied up Ammon and took him to their king. The kings
name was Lamoni. He asked Ammon why he had come to his city.

Ammon said he wanted to live with the Lamanites. He wanted to be

the kings servant. King Lamoni liked Ammon. Ammons job was to
tend the kings sheep. One day while the sheep were drinking water,
some wicked Lamanites came and scattered the sheep. They wanted
to steal the sheep. The kings servants were afraid the king would kill
them because the sheep were gone. Ammon told them not to be
afraid. He said they would find and protect the sheep. The found
the sheep and gathered them to the water. The wicked Lamanites
came again to steal the sheep. Ammon told the servants to surround
the sheep so they couldnt scatter them again. Ammon went to the
wicked Lamanites.
The Lamanites thought they could kill Ammon. Ammon had the power
of God with him. He threw some stones with his sling and killed some
of the wicked Lamanites. The Lamanites tried to kill Ammon with their
clubs. He cut off their arms. The wicked men were afraid and ran
away. The kings servants were surprised that Ammon was so strong.
They took the arms to show the king. The king wanted to see Ammon
but he was afraid. Ammon came to the king. King Lamoni didnt know
what to say to Ammon. The Holy Ghost helped Ammon know what
the king was thinking. Ammon said he wasnt God. He said he was a
man. King Lamoni asked Ammon to teach him. Ammon taught King
Lamoni about God and Jesus Christ. He told King Lamoni about the
things that were written on the gold plates and the brass plates. King
Lamoni believed Ammon.
Story
Print, color and cut out pictures for the story. Introduce the Mom, Mary the
daughter and the older lady Mrs. Johnson as the pictures. Have your child hold
up the right picture when you are telling the story. There are 2 stories this
devotional. The second story is one page and printable with no picture that
follows the Mary and Mrs. Johnson story. It might need some explanation but is
so sweet.

Mary and Mrs. Johnson

Mommy, Mary asked as she came in the house, who lives in the big
house down the street? We dont ever see anyone there.

Mother replied, An older lady. Her name is Mrs. Johnson. She isnt
able to get around very well so she stays at home a lot. Would you like
to meet her?

I dont know, said Mary. Is she nice?

Oh, yes, said mother, and she loves children. Maybe we could
make some cookies to take to her.

The next day Mary helped her mother make some cookies. They took
them down the street to Mrs. Johnsons house. Mary was excited to
give the cookies to Mrs. Johnson. When Mrs. Johnson answered the
door, she had a sad, tired look on her face, but she started to smile
when Mary gave her the cookies.

Oh, thank you, said Mrs. Johnson. These look delicious. Did you
help make them?
Yes, said Mary.

The next day Mary was walking down the sidewalk, and Mrs. Johnson
was sitting on her porch. Mary waved, and Mrs. Johnson called for
her to come. Mary skipped over to where Mrs. Johnson was sitting.
Mrs. Johnson again thanked her for the cookies. Then she told Mary
some stories about when she was a little girl. Mary loved to listen to
her. Each day she would go to see Mrs. Johnson, often taking some
pictures she had colored and some fresh peas or corn from the
garden. Mary soon grew to love Mrs. Johnson, and Mrs. Johnson
loved to have Mary come. They talked about many things.

Then one day Mary asked Mrs. Johnson to come to family home
evening at her house. The whole family planned a special night. They
had a good time. Mrs. Johnson felt so good to be involved, and Mary
had a new friend.
How was Mary a missionary? (She showed love and kindness for a
neighbor. She invited Mrs. Johnson to family home evening.)
Is there someone who lives by us that we could show love for?

Explain that all through our lives, we should tell people about the
Church. Sometimes they will listen and sometimes they wont. But we
should always try to give them the great gift of happiness and
kindness. They can be good friends.
