2. Activity Description
The whole activities is conducted under the course of 30 minutes towards an
intermediate level Malaysian secondary (form 4) school students. The objective of this
activity is to promote the awareness of preserving our ecosystem. It is also to enhance the
students listening skills by participating in the activities by guiding them and to improve
their sub-skills in listening and speaking. Other than that, these activities will then flourish
their creative and critical thinking skills and that they may apply to their daily lives.

3. Activity procedure (30 minutes module)


Introduction: To introduce students to waste awareness by conducting a list of activities that
solely focuses on the listening skills.
Pre-listening activities:

1. showing a picture of wastage around us (pollution, garbage,


etc.)
2. Teacher asks what they can describe upon seeing the picture.
Hence, discussion ensured.
3. Teacher asks if the students ever recycle or conserve the
earths natural resources.
4. Teacher tells the importance of cooperating green policy.

While-listening activities:

1. to practice the listening skill, teacher makes up a situation


about a world where there are no trees and natural resources
because the of the earths ecosystem has ceased to exist.
2. Students will listen as they draw the situation on a piece of
paper in groups.
3. Teacher may explain and give explicit details about the
situation or students can come up on their own creativity.
4. Upon completing, each group shall present up front about
their drawing.
5. Teacher then distributes a task sheet with questions and asks
the students to pay attention to the audio that is played.
6. The audio will be played twice for the students to answer the
task sheet given.
7. Teacher then will discuss the answers in class.

Post-listening activity:

1. Students will be asked to give a reflection on todays lesson.


2. Teacher asks the students to come up with a miniature
consist of natural and environmental elements. This will be a
class project.
3. After completing, the miniature will be displayed on the
English language section in class.

4) Listening text
XYZ Group of fast food restaurants under the leadership of its Chief Executive
Officer, Rafidah Abidin has been concerned with reducing waste in our operations and
educating our customers about sustainable living. Since its official inception in 2008, our
sustainability initiative has been our commitment and it has been embedded in our work
culture and is also part of everything we do. In our partnership with Flora Recycling, we
recycle over 140 tonnes of cardboard besides over 6 tonnes of aluminium cans, plastic bottles
and steel cans annually. Our company also donates about 1500 litres of used cooking oil to
Indah Biofuels Research. We have also implemented the concept of trayless dining in all our
XYZ fast food restaurants which has led to decrease in energy and water consumption
besides being successful in reducing 37% food waste, 55% beverage and liquid waste.
Our company also uses disposable materials. Our companys Lose the Lid campaign was a
success whereby we managed to reduce plastic lid purchases by 33% in 2011. Our companys
products utilize locally grown foods in nearly all our fast food outlets. The ingredients used in
our food products are derived from local farms as it helps to cut down on carbon emissions
from transportation vehicles especially imported food items.
