Plants and animals have similar life cycles.
What are similarities in living things?
Why do changes in the cycle occur?
What does living things need to grow?
Standard - 3.1.2.A3 Identify similarities and differences
in the life cycles of plants and animals.
Standard 3.1.1.B1 Grow plants from seed and describe
how they grow and change. Compare to adult plants.

Standard 3.1.K.A3 Observe, compare, and describe

stages of life cycles for plants.
First grade students, through individual work and class
discussion will identify similarities and differences
between plant and animal life cycles.
Analyze: Differentiate between and examine the
various parts of a plant life cycle.
Level 2: Describe and explain the life cycle of plants..
Collect and grade the refresher Parts of a Plant
worksheet.
Allow students to plant their own seed in a small cup.
Observe and document throughout time in science
journals, collect them.
Document class discussion and who participated.
Knowledge Constructor: Students building knowledge
by exploring real world situations and developing ideas
and answers.
Creative Communicator: Students create content that
explains the message appropriately to their peers.
Learning and Innovation Skills: Students will effectively
collaborate with peers to describe the lifecycle of
plants.
Key Subjects and 21st Century Themes: Environmental
Literacy, by differentiating between plant and animal
life cycles.
If student is unable to cut out labels for Parts of a Plant
worksheet or the magnifying glass life cycle of frogs,
have it pre cut for the student. If student cannot plant
seed, plant virtual seed on Seed to Plant app. Let them
document verbally, writing down, or on iPad what
happens to the plant as it grows.

RATIONALE for the
Learning Plan
Introduction
Activating Prior Knowledge
Have a refresher worksheet to jog the memory of the
parts of a plant. (Parts of Plant Worksheet below)
Hook/Lead-In/Anticipatory Set
Ask students what they know about animal life cycles.
Students who participate will receive an animal cracker
cookie.
Explicit
Big Idea Statement
Instructions
Plants have life cycles.
Essential Questions Statement
What grows from a seed?
What does a seed need to grow?
Objective Statement
Describe the life cycle of plants and compare to animal
life cycle.
Transition
Read The Tiny Seed book, ask students to gather in one
place of the room.
Key Vocabulary
Roots
Stem
Leaves
Flower
Seed
Lesson Procedure PreAssessment of Students
Write on whiteboard or interactive board a KWL chart to
find out what students know about plant and animal life
cycles. Use this everyday to see if students have gained
knowledge throughout the lesson.
Modeling of the Concept
Show the references to the hen and dog life cycles
(below). Connect it to the plant worksheet they
completed and to the plant life cycle reference (below).
Guiding the Practice
Posting the life cycles of a chicken, dog, and sunflower
for reference when they share similarities and
differences between plants and animals.
Providing the Independent Practice
Allow students to make magnifying glass life cycle
worksheet (below). Students will color and cut out the
four stage life cycle of a frog. They will cut out the
magnifying class and glue both to construction paper.
Their creations will be hung in class.
Transition
Get students out of their seats and move to the

Formal Evaluation
Grade the science journal reflection of plant growth.
Ask students during the animal magnifying class
worksheet some similarities and differences between
plant and animal life cycles. Document what students
participate.
Informal Evaluation
During class discussion, observe and document the
response of each childs question, hypothesis, and
statement.
Summary & Review of the Learning
Have class discussion of the parts of a plant and how
each parts help the plant grow over time. Students who

done completing the magnifying class life cycle or parts
of a plant worksheet, it can be done for homework and
collected the following day.
