Math: Morning Calendar

Did not volunteer to
answer the math question
for the morning math
calendar. When asked to
answer a question using a
double ten frame he was
unable to answer the
question.

According to the resource

teacher, Child 1 is
selectively mute. He
rarely talks to other
students in the class or
the teacher. I wonder
how he is going to be to
me as the semester
progresses.

Language Arts: Phonics

When getting on their
carpet spots for a phonics
lesson. Another student sat
in his spot. Instead of
saying something, he just
sat in a different spot.
During phonics, he spelled
rat, rag.

I thought it was
interesting how he did
not stand up for himself
or say something since it
was his assigned seat.

Math: Number Rack

activity
Struggled to make
numbers on the number
rack on the carpet during
math. When asked to show
7, he moved 3 beads over.
When asked to show what
5 +5 was, the classroom
teacher assisted him.
Language Arts: Read

aloud because he was
playing with his shoes.
When asked to write a
sentence giving a key
detail of the story, he just
wrote a bunch of letters
and scribbles.

hat and sat but struggled
to spell the word tin.
During the morning work,
he was able to write his
first and last name very
well for handwriting
practice.
Math: Calendar
Was able to count and pick
six pennies out of a
container. Also, was able to
write 1-30 without any
problems.
Language Arts: Phonics
Was not able to write bat
hat sat or cat. He mixes up
his letters or uses random
letters. Child 2 is able to
write his first name but it is
very sloppy, he is unable to
write his last name.
Math: Writing numbers
When asked to write his
numbers 1-30, child 2 was
not able to write his
numbers from 1- 10. He
said it was too hard.
Language Arts: Read Aloud
When asked questions
during the read aloud, the
resource teacher had to
threaten him with a clip
change in order to get him

but because retentions

were overturned, hes
now in the first grade
classroom.

I was surprised that child

1 volunteered to count
the pennies because he
had to do it in front of
the class.

I realized that child 2 is

very far behind the rest
of his class and could use
assistance.

Since it was Monday, it

was time to change
classroom jobs. When
asked if he wanted a job,
he refused to answer.

to answer. He whispered
his answer.
Math: Number Rack activity
Does not offer to answer
any questions during math.
He struggled to make the
addition problems using
the number rack and
looked off of his neighbors
to find the answers.
Language Arts: Read Aloud
During the shared read
aloud, child 2 was not
paying attention and
complained about having a
headache. He fell asleep
during the story and when
he was asked if he liked it,
he replied that he did not.
Math: Dry Erase Board
Activity
When attempting to fill in
the blank for the problem 3
+ __= 4. He filled in 6
instead of 1.

Language arts: Sight Words

When practicing the sight
words for September, child
1 seemed to know all of his
sight words even though he
was reluctant to say so.
Math: Student was not
present during math today
because he was being
tested for language arts.
Absent: Probably because
of his headache he had
yesterday.

Language Arts: Read Aloud

When asked what the main
character was in Where
the Wild Things Are, he
refused to answer the
question.
Math: Using Ten Frames

Child 2

Child 1

Child 2 is usually full of

energy and always
moving, it was very clear
that he did not feel well
today.

I am unsure if child 1 did

not want to answer the
question or if he did not
answer because he did
not the answer to the
question.

He was paying attention

and able to mock the
equations that the resource
teacher was showing the
class. Still did not raise his
hands to answer any
questions.
Language Arts: Initial
consonants
When asked what the initial
consonant of a word was,
he just guessing letters he
had no idea what the initial
consonant was for web.

Child 2

Child 2 was late to school

this morning and missed
handwriting practice.

Math: Using ten frames, he

struggled to match the
equation that the teacher
was making as examples.
He did not understand that
8 +2 and 2 +8 both equal
10 and are the same thing.

Language Arts Writing

Activity
After having been read a
book about the four
seasons, child 1 drew his
favorite season and was
able to label what it was
correctly.

penny was worth, Child 1
was hesitant to answer.
After the classroom teacher
asked him again, he
reluctantly said 1.
Language Arts Writing

When drawing a picture
about his favorite season
and labeling it, Child 2
drew scribbles on his paper
and there was no label.

Although he read very
quietly, he still did a good
job reading and was pretty
fluent.
Child 1 is at a reading level
B when he should be a
level D.
Math Number Recognition

Language Arts Morning

Handwriting
Child 1 has improved a lot
when it has come to his
handwriting. All of his
letters are hitting the
bottom line and the lower
case are all coming up to
the middle line where they
should be.
Math Filling in a 100s Chart
When filling in the 100s
chart, Child 1 was able to
put all of the numbers in
the correct order.
Language Arts Read Aloud
Child 2 came during the
end of the Read Aloud so
he did not get to hear the
entire story. When it came
to writing the beginning,
middle, and end of the
story, he did not write
anything since he was not
there.

Parents called on
Wednesday and said he
was sick with a stomach
bug. Child 2 is very far
behind the rest of the
class and missing a week
of school is only going to
put him further behind.

Child 2 came at 10:30

today and went straight
to tutoring. If Child 2
keeps missing class, the
tutor is going to pick
another student. I hope
that another student is
not picked because child
2 really needs the extra
assistance in language
arts.

Student missed math

because of tutoring today.

When naming the short
vowel in the word dig,
Child 1 was able to say that
it was a short i. When it
was his turn to tell the
class which word he had,
he said no because he did
not want to go in front of
the class.
Math: Centers
Child 1 was actively
engaged in his math
center. He seemed to be
working well with his peers
and was even talking to
them.

Language Arts: Writers

Workshop
Child 1 volunteered to read
his writing out loud to the
entire class. The resource
teacher did not have to ask
him or make him read.
Math: Making a Number
Flap
When making a number
flap, Child 1 had to start
over because he was not
following directions.
Instead of making 3 on one
side and 4 on the other to
make 7, he put 7 on both
sides. On his second
attempt to make the
number rack, Child 1 made
it correctly.
Language Arts: Work Places

I was surprised at Child 1

volunteering to read his
book in front of the class
since he never wants to
talk.

On the second number

flap, Child 1 drew 3 sad
faces on one side and 4
sad faces on the other. I
think that he did this
because he had to start
over on his number flap.

All students were given

the number 7 or higher
to make a number flap
with but the resource
teacher gave him the
number 3.

and punctuation during

writers workshop. He
always seems eager to
write and writes more than
a paragraph.
Math: Morning Calendar
Child 1 volunteered to
count the math shapes for
the calendar this morning.
He stood up in front of the
class and counted to 7.
Language Arts: Writers
Workshop
In order to know what Child
2 writes about, he has to
be asked. His writing right
now consists of letters,
numbers, and scribbles.
Child 2 was not even sure
what he wrote about and
complained of having a
headache.
Math: Morning Calendar
Struggled to pay attention
on the carpet during math
this morning. When asked
a question about the

Using a white board to
show the next day on the
math calendar, he did not
know what the next day
would be.
Language Arts: Writers
Workshop
Child 1 volunteered to read
his writers workshop story
to the class. He read the
story to the class very
quietly. The resource
teacher asked the class to
be super quiet to hear the
students whispering.
Math: Center Game
The resource teacher
modified a math game so
instead of doing addition,

Child 2 often guesses

instead of trying to solve
the answer during math.

Child 2 made it to class

almost everyday last
week according to the
resource teacher.
The morning math
calendar is an activity
the children do almost
every morning and
changes every month.
I was surprised at the
excitement from Child 1.
He is usually very quiet
but he was proud of his
writing and wanted to
share with the class. I
think that this is a step in
the right direction.

It seems that other

students get frustrated

if he knew how to count by
5s, and he shook his head
no. The teacher went down
the rows asking the
students to say the next

I think that Child 1 feels

most uncomfortable
about math and he
refuses to talk because
he does not know what
to answer.
