SUBJECT DESCRIPTION
This introduction course to management discusses the basic concepts of management and
organization, their history and development within the context of current changing business
environment. This course presents systematically the process of coordinating work activities so
that they are completed efficiently and effectively with and through other people. Four different
management processes are subject to our discussion, i.e., planning, organizing, leading, and
controlling. Special attention will be given to social responsibility, managerial ethics, and the
importance of multinational organizations.
SUBJECT OBJECTIVES
Upon completion of the course, the learning participant should:
Understand basic managerial concepts and their application in achieving high performance.
Be familiar with the historical development and different perspectives concerning
management theory and its application to the practice of managing.
Be knowledgeable of the theory and practical applications of the managerial process.
Understand different factors that influence the managerial process.
Be aware of the importance of contextual factors (e.g., environment, technology, size of
organization) in determining structural and operating processes in achieving high
performance.
In terms of cognitive skills, by studying this subject, the students will improve their ability to
explain/to give an argument logically, to analyze and synthesize different ideas and theories,
and to apply theories to the real world. In addition, the students will improve their analytical
skills, communication skills, writing skills, team-working skills, time-management skills, and
problem-solving skills.

CLASSROOM ORGANIZATION

One 150-minute lecture per week (total: 14 weeks)


Quiz will be conducted on schedule.
Examination:
o Mid-term exam will be closed book. The examination evaluates students
understanding of subjects delivered in 1st week to 7th week.
o Final exam will be closed book. The examination concerns the subjects delivered in
8th week to 14th week.
Teaching method consists of lecture, students presentation, class discussion, case
analysis, problem solving, and cooperative learning.

Facilitators (lecturers) will facilitate the learning process based on Active Learning principle.
Active Learning emphasizes on varying methods of teaching (Lecturing, Problem-Based
Learning or PBL, Participant-Centered Learning or PCL). Active Learning is applied because
learning participants (students) have different ways of learning. Active Learning motivates
students to be active in class activities and to actualize their strengths. Active Learning will
dominate all sessions of this course.
The detail of assignment is explained in Week 1. The lecturer can remind the class one week
before the session when the assignment is to be submitetted and/or discussed. In order to
understand the problem/question/case and answer it or comment on it, students should prepare
themselves with materials from books, articles, newspapers, etc.
Students are expected to be active in the discussions. Participation (both quality and quantity)
is an important part of the grade. The lecturer facilitates the learning process and discussion
(guiding the discussion), and also cover the review and conduct quiz on theories/concepts.
Any types of assessment such as quiz or individual/group assignments should provide students
with enough challenge and difficulties.
ASSIGNMENT
Team assignment.
You are to build group of 3 to write a case of an Indonesian company of particular topic related
to chapter material based on syllabus, and present the case analysis. Each group shall write
and present one case analysis (either before mid semester test OR after mid semester test).
Each group must submit their paper on the same day as their presentation day. Non-presenting
groups
are
obliged
to
submit
questions
for
the
presenting
group.

LECTURER POLICY
Assignment should be handed in no late than due date. Any late work will be assessed a
penalty of five (5) point a day (max. two days). Work handed in late than three days will be
marked for zero (0).

ATTENDANCE
Referring to the faculty regulation, the Program requires students to fulfill a minimum
attendance of 80% to be eligible for the final exam. Thus, students should attend a minimum 12
out of 14 lecturing sessions.

EXAMINATION REGULATION
1. Students may use non-programmable calculators only.
2. Students may use the dictionary provided by the program only. Students should notify
their exam supervisor(s) if they need it.
3. Students should not conduct any act of cheating during the examination. Students will
automatically be graded E for the subject if they are caught cheating during the
examination of the respective subject. In addition, students will be graded E for
all other subjects taken during the particular semester, whose examinations
have taken place prior to the cheated examination.
4. Deferred examination is only applicable if it is requested in written by the Program.

ORIGINALITY
Students should maintain originality and respect intellectual property rights. Therefore, students
should avoid conducting any act of plagiarism when doing written assignments (if any), which
may take a form of short individual / group paper and / or summary.
The followings are acts of plagiarism:
Copying paragraphs, sentences, a single sentence, or even a significant part of a
sentence directly without enclosing them in quotation marks and appropriately
footnoted;
Using and / or developing others ideas found in printed materials or film elsewhere
without explicitly referencing them to the respective author or the source of the idea.
Plagiarism is a serious infringement of intellectual property rights. Any assignment that
contains presumed plagiarism will be marked 0 (zero).
Since students are required to write group papers, students should sign a Statement of
Authorship and attach it to their papers before paper submission. The form of Statement of
Authorship is available at the Resource Center of the Program. Lecturer(s) and / or tutor(s) will
refuse to mark any paper that has no signed Statement of Authorship attached.
In addition, students should ask for cover sheet from the Resource Center of the Program for
any assignment submitted.
