The next Genealogy Group meeting will be at Creekside Place on Thursday,

December 1st, at 6:00 PM. The presenters will be Lori Bessler, Reference
Archivist for the Wisconsin Historical Society, and Russ Horton from the
Wisconsin Veterans Museum. They will begin with suggestions on how to
research Civil War veterans, but they will be available to answer questions
about both institutions, which contain a wealth of information about military
history.
The LibraryArchives Division of the Wisconsin Historical Society acquires
and preserves documentary evidence about the history of Wisconsin, the
United States and Canada. It is also the American History Library for the
University of Wisconsin, an official depository for local, state and federal
government publications, and the State Archives for state and local
government records of historical importance, including military records.
The Library provides public access to books, magazines, newspapers,
government information, compact discs and other formats of published
materials. The Archives collects and preserves unpublished records, such as
hand-written manuscripts of people and organizations, photographs, sound
recordings, maps, records of state and local governments and other original
documents. Researchers sometimes are lucky to find a letter written by their
ancestor or a member of his regiment.
The Society's genealogy and history collections are among the largest and
most comprehensive in the world documenting North American history. In
addition to 3.8 million printed and microform North American volumes, the
Library-Archives contains 25,000 maps, 3 million historical images and
110,000 cubic feet of archival materials.
