Classroom Arrangement
I was asked to create my own classroom within the website Floor Planner and to discuss
the rationale for each piece of furniture within that classroom. We had to use Fred Jones and
Harry Wongs theory of classroom set up, keeping in mind a diverse student population and the
practical placement of furniture. I was encouraged to think in terms of my dream classroom, and
there was no limit in terms of monetary budgets. This is a classroom set up for thirty-two
students. The entire set up of the room is facing the back wall. This means anyone who is late or
has a question, any colleagues who come in, or even the principal will be able to enter without
causing a disruption to the lesson.
Student Tables: The student tables are set up in pairs on either side of the center aisle.
The two inner rows of desks face directly toward the front of the classroom. Students
sitting at these desks will be able to clearly see the teacher and hear the lecture from this
vantage point. The outer rows of student tables are angled inward, facing the center of the
front of the room. This is set up so that the students do not have to turn their heads toward
the teacher at the front of the class, but rather they will be able to comfortably focus by
facing the teacher directly. The chairs will not be attached to the tables, so any student
who for any reason cannot sit as closely to the table as others, they have the ability to
scoot their chair further away from their table. The tables will also be within arms reach
and proximity.
Large Table: The large table is located in the left, innermost column of student tables.
This is easily accessible for students with special needs related to the big table. The
center aisle will be large enough to comfortably fit a wheel chair through. They table is
also on locked wheels, so if the student prefers to sit in a different location, it is easy and
simple for the teacher to make accommodations as necessary. If the table is not in use, the
teacher can also place materials on it that will be needed for the class period.
Bulletin Board: The Bulletin Board is located at the doorway. It is placed so that the
door does not swing into it, which would make it a fire hazard. This way, students will be
able to check school announcements, classroom rules, what is appropriate behavior, and
also be able to clearly see it as they walk in and turn in their homework.
Mounted Projector: The mounted projector is located in the middle of the classroom
along the x-axis and closer to the front. This is lined up with the Smartboard. It is not
hanging over any students heads and will be well out of their reach.

Overhead Projector: The overhead projector is located on a cart in the back of the
classroom, next to the teachers desk. This is an out of the way spot, and may be tedious
pulling it out for use. The overhead projector will most likely not be used, however,
it.
Teachers Locked Cabinet: This cabinet is located just in front of the filing cabinet, still
within the desk area. As with the filing cabinet and trash can, it is located there for
convenience and is unnoticeable. The teacher can readily access it to place important
grades or personal belongings inside, while the students will know it is off limits.
Materials Cabinet: The materials cabinet is located at the front-right corner of the
room. This is so that is out of the way, but it is still easily accessible to kids who may be
how they handle them. For the student, the bookshelf is far enough from the desk to not
place the student in the vicinity, but open enough to where the student can reach it.
