Type of Network Technologies for Rubha Reidh
Institution or organizations such as Rubha Reidh depend on the ability to share
information all through the entire organization in an effective and efficient way. The use of
computer networks have allowed these technology are today part and parcel of every business.
An areas such as Melvaig has only two available options when it comes to setting up a network
(Lorenz et al,. 2010). The best options for the areas as well as the lighthouse is wireless network,
however, these are the two type of networks that could be used in the case of Rubha Reidh
(Lighthouse).
First is Wide Area Network (WAN) wired network; this type of network uses cables to
connect to computers within a certain area or they can also use a wireless network that uses radio
frequencies to connect to computers (Metke & Ekl, 2010). Wireless networks have offered
organization such as Rubha Reidh to become more mobile and friendly to clients; therefore,
organizations are now becoming friendly using a combination of both wired and wireless
networks. The basic requirement needed for the two type of layout are almost the same but for
an organization such as Rubha Reidh to use the wireless option it needs a little more hardware
components. Despite the fact that such networks open the area of organization to other security
problems or privacy risks, they offer reliable and efficient access to information considered as an
added advantage to the organization. On the other hand, if Rubha Reidh is faced with security
risks, then this means that there are other ways that can be used to prevent such undertaking from
taking place.
Wired Networks
Wired Networks also denoted as Ethernet networks; are considered as the most common
of all the type of local area networks technologies. It is considered as a collection of two or more

Network Technologies 3
computers and other devices or equipment connected to Ethernet cables. Ethernet is considered
as the fastest wired network protocol with high connection speed of more than 20 megabits per
second (Mbps) to about 200 Mbps of higher (Metke & Ekl, 2010). Wired networks can also be
used as part other wireless and wired networks that exists. To be able to connect a computer to a
network that has an Ethernet cable, the computer must have other supporting adapters such as
Ethernet adapters mostly known as network interface cards denoted as NIC. The adapters could
be internal or external (installed in computers or housed in different and separate cases. Some of
the devices have in-built adapter ports while others have separate adapters. Wired network
technologies have varied topologies such as the below:

The above is considered as a star network; it has general more simplistic type of topology
in the world. It has only one hub that connects more than three computers and to a network
printers. This type of network is used mostly for small businesses are well as a small area with
limited people but with close proximity (Metke & Ekl, 2010). It is most useful for applications
whereby some processing must be placed within a centralized or localized area. The demerit of
the topology is that its network has high vulnerability. In addition, all the data must pass via a
centralized host computer and when the host fails then all the other computers and devices
connected to the same fails.

Network Technologies 4

On the other hand is the bus network. The above type of network topology is bus
topology. It has no centralize computer hence considered to be the best network topology for the
Rubha Reidh since all the computers are linked to a single circuit (Subramanian, 2010). This type
of network broadcasts signal in all other directions as it is usually connected to a special software
that determines which computer to get signal from or what type of signal. One of the
disadvantages to the type of network is that one signal can only be sent at a single time hence
this again does not support the fact that the network does not support Rubha Reidh needs.
Wireless Networks
This is a type of network that uses high levels of frequency radio waves rather than cables
to communicate between the nodes. This is considered as another best option for business
networking and home. Organizations and individuals can able to use such an option to be able to
expand their wired network to go completely wireless. It is the best option for the case of Rubha
Reidh because this is an areas with had topography that cannot support the use of land cables in
addition, it will be costly for Rubha Reidh to install such cables. Wireless permits Rubha Reidh
users to use other devices to share the same network without networking cables hence this gives
the lighthouse users the mobility to be able to use the network in all sphere of their needs and
interest. There are two type of wireless network that can be used by Rubha Reidh (ad-hoc or peer
to peer and infrastructure wireless network.

Network Technologies 5

An ad-hoc or what is considered as peer to peer network consists of a varied number of

computers which is equipped with a wireless network card at the end. This means that for the
users to be able to use the network, they need to have a user card. Each computer of devices such
smartphone and printers that support wireless networking sharing are able to communicate
directly with each other. They can be able to share file and printers in the same way like the other
hence this is considered as the best way to support networking at Rubha Reidh (Abdelzaher et
al,. 2010).

An infrastructure wireless network is one that consists of an access point to be of the

computers hence it is considered as one of the best networks for the computers. In this type of
network, the point of access acts as hub, offering connectivity to all the other computers on
board. It can be able to bridge the gap between a wirelesses LAN to a wired LAN permitting
wireless computers to be able to access network resources that exists.
Question 3
The network will be made of three main parts: the core part of the network that is linked
to internet-denoted as the backbone, the backhaul that connects the backbone network to the

Network Technologies 6
organization and
the local loop; this
connects the
premises to the
backhaul that is
delivered within
the community.
The Core
Network
The backhaul will
depend on the
nature and the availability of the supplier considering that the organization is in place that the
topography is not supportive. Some of the suppliers will have a complete infrastructure with
links to the network and other meshing links between the points with the backbone that offers a
loading balance. The core network of the backbone will include the management as well as the
customer authentication equipment that are needed to route the internet network that exists.
The Backhaul
The connections of the backhaul links will offer the delivery or the provision of internet services
from the core to the community as well as other business within the organization. The backhaul
will be provided by fiber and wireless network.

The Local Loop

Network Technologies 7
The backhaul link will be terminate within the business premises at what is going to be denoted
as Business Access Point. This will be normally one main or key link to the business from the
core network (internet). However, it is going to be dependent on the demand of extraction from
the clients and the acceptability of the point of failure. The backhaul link will be sized to meet
the needs of the community; automatic increase of the bandwidth will be offered and controlled
by Rubha Reidh
Summary
For Rubha Reidh to be able to share and communicate over a prescribed network, it has to come
up with best measures to be able to support its undertakings; the best option is using wireless
network because it is cheap and the infrastructure is easy to implement.
