8 BRIEF TALES OF LOVERS

Pyramus and Thisbe


Pyramus was the most handsome man and was a childhood friend of Thisbe, the first maiden
in Babylonia and for always being together, they fell in love with each other. But, their parents
were totally against their union. So, they built a very huge wall seperating the two lovers for
years. They were contented of stealing talks through a small hole of the wall.
One night, they decided to elope while everybody is sleeping. They decided to meet in the
nearby fields near a mulberry tree.
Thisbe, reached there first, but as she waited, she saw a lioness....
After few more minutes, Pyramus arrived....
They died together, in love and peace.
It is said that this is the reason why berries on the Mulberry bush are red, instead of original
white, in commemoration of the two young lovers and their great sacrifice.

Orpheus and Eurydice


Orpheus and Eurydice were young and in love. They are inseparabel, and so they decided to
get married.
But on the day of their wedding, Eurydice got bitten by a snake!
Orpheus being the desperate used his blessed talent in music upon rescuing his beloved
Eurydice in the underworld.

When you hear music mourns about love, it is Orpheus' spirit who guides the hand of the
musician who play it...
Endymion
Endymion was a young shepherd who led his flocks but often engage into deep slumber.
Orpheus got curious and he found the answer upon looking up.

Pygmalion and Galatea


Pygmalion was a master of sculptor and bound of not marrying for he hates women. But as he
created Galatea, he fell in love with the beauty of his creation and asked Aphrodite to bring her
life.

Baucis and Philemon


The King Zeus and Hermes got tired of fun and merriment in the Olympus and decided to
disguise as beggars and came down to a town which is currently in a fiesta. Every door they
knocked showed them hostility until they arrived in front of the door of Baucis and Philemon
....
The day of flooding came and the town got drowned except for Baucis and philemon whose
love was stronger than anything in the world. Making them an aok and a linden tree, hugging
each other.

Apollo and Daphne


Artemis is the patron of Daphne therefore she bounds not to marry and dislikes men. But one
day Apollo saw her and fell in love.

From them on Laurel is also incuded to the symbols of Apollo. ...

Alpheus and Arethusa


Arethusa was a huntress and a follower of Artemis, also she wpuld have nothing to do with
men. One day as she was taking her bath in a river, Alpheus the god of the river, showed up
and confessed to her, so she ran away.....
Even today, there is an Arethusa spring in Alpheus river in Greece....

Ceyx and Alcyone


Alycone was the daughter of the god of wind who married the king of Trachis, Ceyx. The entire
kingdom looked upon how perfect the couple was, which made Zeus and Hera's madness
being compared to humans. Because of this, Ceyx sailed with the knowledge of him being
dead upon returning. AND so one night, he decided to sail, and never returned for weeks.

One day, Alycone went to the shore and saw Ceyx' body in wrath.

Because of the love they have, Zeus regretted his action and transformed the two couple into
Halycon Birds.
