work collaboratively using STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) learning
process. Children will have the opportunity to analyse their choices from the perspectives of others.
Students will:
identify current innovations in our world

Passion Projects
Passion Projects continue this term. It is an opportunity for students to consolidate skills in the area of
problem solving, design, creating, making and evaluating. We look forward to this
EXTRA-CURRICULAR learning area engaging our students and deepening their learning. Below is

an outline of each passion project learning area. Your child will participate in one passion project per
semester. We look forward to the end of semester exhibition in each passion project area.
Art with Mrs Brown
Students will use a visual diary to keep a record of their experiments with a range of media. They will
learn about a variety of artists and how they use different media for different effects. Students will
begin to create a piece of artwork based on their individual responses.
Performing Arts with Mrs Egglezos
Students will learn how to prepare for and perform a music production. They will independently and
collaboratively learn a range of skills and techniques required when performing and preparing the
stage for a production. Students will learn how to set up, take care of and work with a range of
musical and stage equipment in order to plan, develop, refine and present their overall performance.
They will have an opportunity to investigate and learn about various productions and their specific role
and character that they will play. Students will conclude the semester of learning by performing a
Production to an audience.
Kitchen Garden with Mrs Park
The Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden program emphasizes the flavours as well as the health
benefits of fresh, seasonal food. Dishes cooked reflect the vegetables, herbs and fruits grown by the
children in their organic gardens. The children will be introduced to important life skills in the kitchen,
including knife skills, to cook an array of cuisines including salads, stir fries, noodles, unleavened
breads and dips. In the garden children will learn such skills as planting, harvesting, propagation,
mulching, weeding and fertilizing, as well as how we can look after our tools.
Technology- Robotics with Mrs Muir
Students will be given the opportunity to construct robots both individually and in groups. The main
focus will be play, creativity and problem solving. The robotic systems we will be using are Bee-Bots
and Pro-Bots, Robotis Dream, Robotron Tami, Sphero and Lego Mindstorms EV3. Robots can only
do something that they have been taught or programmed to do. Students will use the Hour of Code to
explore basic programming code. They will be in charge and will need to develop a mindset where
they are curious, collaborative, creative and confident. Students will be looking at controlling their
robots by buttons, software, iPads, iPhones, lights, sensors, bluetooth and code. We will also
research the latest breakthroughs in robotic design and developments. At the end of the semester
students will demonstrate their journey with robotics to the Preps, their grades and parents.
Technology- Media- Film Making with Miss Power
Students will be learning about the many facets of television production and editing. Students will
learn about effective filming techniques and use computer software to edit audio and video. They will
learn about and experience the different roles in television such as 'director', 'producer', 'editor',
'graphics designer', 'boom operator', 'gaffer', 'writer', 'floor manager', 'key grip', etc. The practical
purpose of this Passion Project will be for the students to produce a St Francis of Assisi News TV
Program. This news program will be uploaded to the school website for families to view. We are
hoping to report on the many fun and interesting things that are always happening at our school. With
the development of a green-screen recording studio, we anticipate that by the end of the semester,
students will also have the opportunity to learn about and film using this fun and exciting form of
technology. Students will also be taught the many ins and outs of cybersafety, responsible behaviour
and usage of technology.
Health and Fitness with Mr McCarthy
Being fit and healthy isnt a trend. Its a lifestyle

Students will explore how nutrition and physical movement contributes to the wellness of our body
systems and how these systems work together to keep us alive. Students will have the opportunity to
question, research and put into practice their new learning. They will participate in both theory and
practical sessions to develop their knowledge of how the body works and enhance their motor skills
and physical fitness.
Science with Mrs Dato
The passion project aims to provide a good balance between practical hands on activities and
experiments, along with learning the theory behind the science. The students will conduct
experiments and carry out tasks to investigate many areas of science including force and motion,
chemical and physical changes, chromatography, light and electricity. Through the completion of
these tasks the students applied problem solving strategies to ensure their experiments were
successful and explored concepts by changing variables. They will pose questions, hypothesise,
make and record observations and draw conclusions.
