Essential Info
YOU ARE STRONGLY ADVISED TO READ THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION BEFORE
MAKING YOUR APPLICATION. PREVIOUS APPLICANTS SHOULD NOTE THAT
SOME CONDITIONS AND PROCEDURES HAVE CHANGED FOR 2017 NUFFIELD
AWARDS.
The Scholarship
Established as travelling awards for farmers in 1947 by the Nuffield Foundation, the NUFFIELD
FARMING SCHOLARSHIPS TRUST is now an independent, industry funded charitable
organisation. The Trust seeks very special qualities. Approximately 20 awards are made each
year to people who work within farming, food, horticulture, rural and associated industries or are
in a position to influence those industries. The rewards of a Nuffield Scholarship are tremendous,
not only for the individual but also for their industry.
Many industry organisations, individuals, companies or charitable bodies sponsor the awards.
Some awards are restricted by topic or geographical area. However, candidates are entered for all
awards for which they are considered eligible.
On the application form you are required to outline your proposal for study. Should your
application be successful, you will be awarded funds to travel for a period of no less than eight
weeks to wherever you and the Trust agree is appropriate for your study.
If you are selected for a Nuffield award you will receive a bursary of approximately 7,000
towards your travel and subsistence expenses. In addition, the Trust and individual award
sponsors will meet your travel and expenses in relation to the Pre Study Briefing and
Contemporary Scholars Conference. Award sponsors also support the publication of Scholar
reports and direct expenses relating to each award - the total value of an award is in excess of
12,000. Note: This is increased for 2016!
Scholars from other participating Nuffield countries enjoy additional briefings in Australasia and
USA/Canada, including Washington DC in addition to the Contemporary Scholars' Conference.
Nuffield Scholars from the UK have an opportunity to include one of these group tours in their
itinerary, although no additional bursary will be offered by the Trust. Further details will be
available at the briefing. A popular option in recent years has been participation in a short tour in
China.

Nuffield Farming Scholarships are recognised worldwide and in many countries there is a
network of Scholars who will be pleased to assist you.
On return from your travels, you will be expected to write a report and make a presentation at the
annual conference of the Trust describing your findings, the conclusions you have reached and
your recommendations to the industry. You are also expected to use all other means at your
disposal to spread the knowledge you have gained within your industry and beyond.
A brochure "Nuffield - Start a new life journey" and recent copies of our popular newsletter
"Nuffield News" are available from the Director's office on request.
The Global Focus Programme
The Global Focus Program is a great opportunity for UK Scholars to undertake some extra
sponsored travel as part of a group of ten international Scholars. The group will travel for seven
weeks on a program of visits spanning across six different nations. A wide cross section of
agricultural sectors will be covered on what will be an experience of a lifetime. Different
programs are available to choose from at different times of year. UK Scholars can apply as soon
as they are awarded their Scholarship.
Eligibility

Applicants must work within the farming, food, horticulture, rural and associated
industries or are in a position to influence those industries.

Applicants must be aged between 22 and 45 years (the upper age limit is 45).

The Trust seeks people with very special qualities.

There is no requirement for academic qualifications, but applicants will already be well
established in their career and demonstrate a passion for the industry they work in and be
three years post tertiary education.

Candidates must normally be resident in the UK, hold a UK passport or be working

directly for UK agriculture. (Residents of Australia, Canada, France, Netherlands, New
Zealand, the Republic of Ireland and Zimbabwe may apply to the Nuffield Associations in
those countries for awards.)

Scholarships are not awarded to anyone in full-time education or to further research

projects.
Timetable
Scholarships are awarded in October and must be completed within 18 months of award, during
which time the Scholar will travel and study for at least eight weeks in total.
Scholars attend an International pre-study Conference (Contemporary Scholars Conference) and
briefing in early March, held in association with Nuffield bodies in other countries. The Trust
places a very high value on the pre-study briefing. It is a condition of application that if
successful you will be available to participate in the full briefing programme and Contemporary
Scholars' Conference.

On completion of the study tour, Scholars are expected to compile a report prcis for the Nuffield
Annual Report, followed by a full report within three months of study completion which will be
published.
Scholars present their findings at an Annual Conference held in November each year.
Please note that Scholars are also now invited to apply for a place on the Global Focus Program.
An extra bursary which provides the opportunity to travel with nine other scholars on a seven
week program that travels through six different countries looking at a broad range of agricultural
sectors.

How heard
Some Nuffield Scholars now have the opportunity of including a Global Focus Programme Tour
in their study itinerary. These World Tours provide scholars with a unique opportunity to broaden
their horizons and develop their leadership skills whilst working within a small group during an
intense 6-8 week journey investigating agricultural marketing, trade and environmental issues,
and experiencing the social and cultural aspects of each region visited. It is especially well suited
to individuals who have not travelled widely. Similar tours to the following are run each year..
Please indicate by using the tick box which tour you are interested in. If you are not interested
then please tick not interested, (please note, this is not a firm commitment, it is solely an
indication of numbers interested and has no influence on selection).
