BUSINESS CASE ANALYSIS PAPER

Nursing 490W- Nursing Leadership

Business Case Analysis
Purpose of Assignment
The purpose of this assignment is to analyze a problematic situation inherent to the
nursing leadership and provide a rational solution, which addresses the problem.
Approach to Assignment
I approached this assignment by looking at a problem that is currently taking place in the
clinical setting and analyzed how this problem can be resolved.
Reason for Inclusion
I included this paper to show that I can analyze a current situation in an area of nursing
practice and be able to identify what is causing the problem as well as ways to resolve the
problem.
Curricular outcomes
Critical thinking
Engages in creative problem solving.
The problem at hand in this paper is related to staffing issues. I had to use
creative problem solving to figure out a solution to the problem at hand. After
analyzing the situation and options, I came up with hiring permanent staff for the
unit and use nurses from underutilized units in the mean time. Having adequate
staff was an utmost importance at this time.
Nursing Practice
Establishes and /or utilizes outcome measures to evaluate the effectiveness of
care.
Through my analyze of this staffing issue, I found that if float nursing staff from
other nursing units, it would be cost effective for the short term, but for a long
term solution and what will provide the most effective care is going to be to hire
permanent staff for the unit. This solution will provide for safe and effective care
for the patients.
Communication
Produces clear, accurate, and relevant writing using correct grammar,
spelling, and punctuation.
This is performed through my writing of this paper, in APA format. Correct
grammar, spelling, and punctuation used throughout the paper.

Teaching
Uses information technologies and other appropriate methods to enhance
ones own knowledge base.
The use of this business case analysis has enhanced my knowledge of what is
most appropriate for not only staff but for patient care as well. As a nurse I am
well aware of floating to another unit or have others float to the unit I am
working. At the moment it is temporary and works at that time, but it is not the
best solution for anyone. The care of the patients would be better if there was
permanent staff to cover the floor. The continuity of care is better and the morale
of the nurses is better as well. In the long run saving money with less staff ends
up costing more.
Research
Evaluates research that focuses on the efficacy and effectiveness of nursing
interventions.
Based on the research and according to Kusserow & Boateng it usually takes a
long time and a lot of effort to hire replacement staff. Even though it may take
longer for training and the cost may increase for a short time, the overall benefit is
much better with hiring adequate staff for the unit versus paying overtime and
outside agencies to make sure patients are cared for. Altogether permanent staff is
more effective and efficient in caring for patients.
Leadership
Articulates the values of the profession and the role of the nurse as member of
the interdisciplinary health care team.
In this paper the nurse is the main concern. We need to know what is the best way
to appropriately staff a unit that is currently under staffed. The nurses role in this
problem is that they may be floated to other units that are in need and care for
patients that they may not be use to caring for, for example a nurse floated from
the ER that is now on a med-surg floor caring for post-surgical patients. The nurse
can take care of any patient but may need guidance from other staff that knows
the routine care that is needed for the patient. The role is to care for the patient
during your shift and provide the best quality and safe care that you can.
Professionalism
Advocates for professional standards of practice using organizational and
political processes.
In this business case analysis the standard of practice is to not work short staff in
order to provide safe and effective care to the patient. I recommended that the
solution to being short staffed, would be to hire permanent staff for the unit that is
working short staffed and using nurse floaters in the mean time. Floaters are nice
to cover the patient load for a short time, but the best solution would be hiring
staff. This would ensure safe, effective care that all patients deserve during their
hospitalization.

Culture
Integrates knowledge of cultural diversity in performing nursing interventions.
In this case analysis nurses were floated to other units that were in need of help
due to being understaffed. It is the duty of the nurse to care of all patients
regardless of culture, race, gender, beliefs, etc. Even though you are pulled to
other units, you as the nurse as still responsible for providing them with safe and
effective care.
What has changed through my Business Case Analysis paper?
I In this paper what changed for me was the fact that it is cheaper in the long run to hire
permanent staff. I also assumed that the hospital was saving money when they pulled nurses
from other units to help out when there was a need. It has been shown in this business case
analysis that it actually is cheaper for the hospital to hire permanent staff versus pulling from
other units all the time. It helps to eliminate medical errors, morbidity and mortality rates
decreased, and lengths of stay decreased, lowering the cost that were associated with the hospital.
