Chapter 1 Setup
This section describes how to setup VR-5000 after installation. The outline of the setup
is;
Step 1. Configuring PC
Step 2. Connection of PC and monitor
Step 3. Software configuration
Step 4. Initialization of index file
Step 5. Making a backup copy of configuration data
Step 6. Playback VDR data to check data for correct recording
After software configuration, make a backup copy for future use. Configuration data can
be stored onto Compact Flash card so that the configuration data is reloaded during boot
up sequence if no configuration data exists in the DRU. (V0.99.16 does not have this
feature.) DO NOT forget to copy configuration data onto the Compact Flash card at
installation.
Parts and Equipment needed
1) PC with web browser, Internet Explore 5.5 or 6.0. (Web RAP window opens only on
Internet Explore 6.0.)
2) Ethernet cross/null cable, about 2 m
3) SXGA monitor or XGA monitor with multi-scan capability (if available)

1.1 Setup of PC
When connecting to VR-5000, you need to configure the PC as below, using
Administrator. The IP address of VR-5000 is 10.0.0.100.
1) IP Address: 10.0.0.102 or 10.0.0.99 (other than 10.0.0.100)
2) Subnet Mask: 255.0.0.0

1.2 Connection
a) PC
A PC with a web browser is connected to REMOTE 1 on the DCU with an Ethernet cross
/null cable.

b) Monitor
The location of VGA connector for the monitor differs according to Data Collecting Unit
(DCU) chassis. There exist two types of DCU chassis. The original chassis has push
button type power switches and the current chassis has toggle type power switches.
Original Chassis
A D-sub connector, lying on the bottom plate in the DCU, is connected to a SXGA PC
monitor to check that the system runs normally. The monitor displays program number,
memory size, power status, system status, system time, GPS time, selftest result, and
sensor data being received.
Current Chassis
Connect the monitor to the D-sub VGA connector located on the front panel of the Data
Processor Unit (DPU).

1.3 Software Configuration


The system configuration must be updated after installation. VR-5000 Web configurator
or Web setup utility, stored in the DCU (Data Collecting Unit), can be accessed by using a
Web browser such as Internet Explorer.
Before completing the following steps, fill out the VR-5000 INPUT LIST, Appendix A in the
Installation Manual to configure the software accurately and quickly.
The Remote Alarm Panel unit is disconnected until the software configuration is complete,
otherwise alarm sound (i.e. Grabber failure or no radar video) is generated frequently.
To configure VR-5000 software by Web configurator;
1. Open a web browser on the PC.
2. Enter the address, 10.0.0.100. (http://10.0.0.100/)
Start page of VR-5000 Web configurator appears. If not, check the connection of
Ethernet cable and Network settings.
3. Press Connect button. Main window appears.
4. Make sure that the size of the flash memory in the Data Recording Unit and the
backup drive (hard disk) in the Data Collecting Unit is displayed correctly in the Main
window.
If the memory size is zero, turn off the unit and on it again. If the memory size is still
zero, check the connection of the DRU and/or the hard disk.

Backup drive (hard disk) in DCU: Backupdive (1*38411MB or 1*40066MB)
In the example of the figure below, the memory of the hard disk is zero, indicating the
hard disk is not connected.

5. Make sure that the system does not indicate an error by using the following
procedure. If any storage failure error message including DRU failure error appears,
eliminate the error before proceeding the next step.
Using Web configurator
Press Web-RAP button in Main window.
Web RAP window appears. Press
Start button. The window shows the
Ack button
current LED status on the Remote
Alarm Panel.
To stop alarm sound when RAP is connected,
press Ack button.
This window opens on Internet
Explore 6.0, but not on 5.5.

Using LEDs
The system can be also checked by observing LEDs on the front panel near the
power switches. LEDs should change at power-on as below.

Then, LEDs show error codes, such as off, Green, Green, and Red with the RAP
disconnected and Red, Red, off, and Red with the video channel not setup.

6. Press Login button in Main window.

user to discourage tampering.

Channels

An audio password entered here is used when audio data is playbacked. Without the
password, audio cannot be playbacked. If a password is entered, playback of audio is
disabled, if password is not entered in Player. If the password is not set, playback of
audio is not protected.

3. Select a desired channel number by pressing Next or Previous button. Selectable


channel numbers in the menu are VHF1, VHF2, MIC1/MIC2, MIC3/MIC4, and
MIC5/MIC6. Audio from two microphones is recorded in mixture. Control buttons in
the channel menu work as below.
Back: Goes back to the previous menu.
Monitor: Used for audio recording test.
First: Goes to the first channel number.
Previous: Goes back to the previous channel number.
Next: Goes to the next channel number.
Last: Goes to the last channel number.
Edit: Used when editing the page.

Goto: Goes to the page of the specific channel number. Enter the desired channel number
in the box left to Goto button and press the Goto button.

4. Press Edit button to set up the page. Use Channel id, Source and/or Source type
line to identify the input line. It is not necessary to fill in all lines. However, label the
input line clearly for ease of identification.
Active: When the channel is used, check this box.
Channel id: Enter name to identify the sensor. (No.1 VHF for example)
Source: Enter Model name. (FM-8700 for example)
Source type: Numeric field
Note: Enter Manufacture. (Furuno for example)
IMPORTANT!
Text entered in the Channel id line is shown on the playback display
automatically.
Audio channel test
Audio channel test is carried out to check whether audio is received in adequate level or
not. To do so manually;
1. Select a channel to be tested in Audio Channel menu using Next button.
2. Press Edit button.

3. Select either MIC x Active line because audio from two microphones is recorded
onto the same memory. Audio test is made one microphone at a time. After the test,
both MIC x Active lines are checked for automatic microphone test.
Automatic microphone test
If MIC x Active is selected, it will be included in the Microphone-test, that runs
automatically about 1 minute after power-on and then every 12 hours. The automatic
microphone-test is carried out as follows.

The microphones are tested in two groups: One group is MIC1, MIC3, and MIC5, and
the other is MIC2, MIC4, and MIC6. Each microphone has a small buzzer for the
microphone test. First, the power is supplied to MIC1, MIC3, and MIC5 to energize
the buzzer via the relay K1 on JB board, Child and the buzzer sound is recorded.
Then, the power is supplied to a buzzer in MIC2, MIC4, and MIC6 via the relay K2 on
JB board, Child.
4. Press Back button to go back to Audio Channel menu and press Monitor button.

5. Press Recording start button to start recording.
6. Press Stop button to stop recording. Recording will stop automatically after approx. 30
seconds, if STOP is not pressed.
7. Press Play button to play the recorded data. If the audio is noisy or low level,
reposition the microphone.

Video (Radar video channel)


Receivable signal
The system receives VGA compatible video signal.
Video signal level: 0.5 to 1 Vpp (Minimum sync signal is 50 mV when a composite sync
signal is used.)
Horizontal sync signal: Max. 80 kHz, positive or negative
Vertical sync signal: Max. 75 Hz
Receivable resolution: 640x480 to 1280x1024
Channel number or channel # corresponds to the label on the Power Distribution Unit
(PDU): VD1 and VD2 to VD4 (optional).
To set up video channel for Furuno radar;
1. Open Video menu and select the channel to be edited.
2. Press Edit button.
3. Press Verify radar-data button and select the radar type: FR-2105 or FR2805.
4. Press Calibrate button to show the radar picture on the PC screen. The radar image is
displayed on the PC screen in correct size. If not, change menu setting.

To set up video channel for non-Furuno radar;


1. Open Video menu and select the channel to be edited.
2. Press Edit button to set up the menu.
3. Press Calibrate button to show the radar picture on the PC screen.
4. Change settings in the menu.
5. Press Test button to execute the change.
6. Repeat steps 4 and 5 until an adequate picture is obtained. Use the flow chart on
page 13.

Fig. 1.10 shows Video sub menu indicating that radar video is not input to the VDR.
If the radar signal is received normally, this part should be as below for FR-2105.
Horizontal sync frequency: 64000 Hz
Vertical sync polarity: Positive Sync
Vertical number of lines: 1066 ==> Number of lines assumed to be 1024

Settings for the following radars are preprogrammed in Web configurator.


Furuno FR-21X5: FR-21X5
Furuno FAR-28X5: FAR-28X5
Radar with XGA (1024x768) monitor: 1024x768
Kelvin Huges HR3061: HR3061
JRC JMA-9900 series radar outputs VGA VDR signal: 1024x768, RGB (0.5 Vp-p/
positive), HS (TTL/negative) and VS (TTL/negative). Connect these signals to VR-5000
via a buffer unit (or a VGA booster) locally arranged and select the radar type of
1024x768 in Video channel.
A common problem with the connection of other make radar is that HS and VS signal
level is low. To solve this problem, use a booster locally arranged.

Following describes each item in video menu.


Horizontal offset: Moves the picture horizontally. With a larger (smaller) value, the
picture moves left (right). If the value is too high, the framegrabber cannot present a valid
image, indicating a small red cross at the upper left corner in the Internet-explorer
display.
Vertical offset: Moves the picture vertically. With a larger (smaller) value, the picture
moves upward (downward). ). If the value is too high, the framegrabber cannot present a
valid image, indicating a small red cross at the upper left corner in the Internet-explorer
display.
Pll multiplier: This sets the frequency of PLL-oscillator to synchronize with
Horizontal-sync signal, so that the framegrabber grabs pixels across each line correctly. If
wrong, you will see distortion. With a smaller value, grabbed frame becomes narrow, and
with a higher value, the frame becomes wider. You can analyze the image in a program
like Paint Shop Pro. You can drag directly from browser-window to Paint Shop Pro.
Horizontal sync polarity: The polarity of the horizontal sync signal is entered.
VIDEO->Channels shows information about polarity. Set it according to this information.
Phase: Phase setting selects the phase of sampling clock relative to phase locked loop
signal in 32 steps of 11.25 degrees. If Phase is not set correctly, any section of an image
consisting of vertical lines may exhibit tearing. In Alternate-pixel mode, this is 16 steps of
22.50 degrees.
Horizontal resolution: For example, if the image size is 1280x1024, the horizontal
resolution is 1280.
Vertical resolution: For example, if the image size is 1280x1024, the vertical resolution
is 1024.
VCO range: It is used to set a parameter to supply correct current to PLL-oscillator. This
parameter is set according to resolution.
Save image to web: Leave the default setting Saved as JPEG unchanged.
Debug level: Leave this parameter with the default setting None (0).
Color mask bit: Color mask bit has a big influence on the size of the generated
radar-image. If video is noisy, the image size becomes large. Color mask is used to filter
noise. If radar-picture is very noisy, reduce the Color Mask Bit to reduce image-size.
The smaller the color mask bit, the less number of different colors.
24-bit: full-color (each RGB channel(8-bit each) is recorded without masking)
21-bit: each RGB value is masked with 0xFE (254 decimal).
18-bit: each RGB value is masked with 0xFC (252 decimal).
15-bit: each RGB value is masked with 0xF8 (248 decimal).
12-bit: each RGB value is masked with 0xF0 (240 decimal).
9-bit: each RGB value is masked with 0xE0 (224 decimal).
6-bit: each RGB value is masked with 0xC0 (192 decimal).

Interlace type:
When the resolution of the video image is 1280x1024 or better, select Alternate
pixel sampling mode, similar to interlacing except that the columns of pixels are
interlaced instead of lines. In Alternate pixel mode, the PLL runs at half rate and even
pixels are sampled on one frame and odd pixels are sampled on the other frame.
Sync type:
Selects the type of video sync signal. Some video signals include embedded composite
sync rather than separate horizontal and vertical sync signals, typically sync on green.
Some video signals include embedded composite sync rather than separate horizontal
and vertical sync signals. Options are Separate, Composite (embedded in video) and
Sync on Green (SOG, Embedded in Green-analog-signal in RGB-lines).
Gain and Offset: These adjust contrast and brightness by setting RGB values.

Serial channel (RS-422)


This menu sets channels for signals received by RS-422 IN terminal board (SI00 to SI07,
and optional SI08 to SI15). The channel receives not only IEC sentences but also binary
data. Channel number or channel # corresponds to the label on the terminal board on the
Junction Box.
Antenna position of the position sensor or GPS
is entered in the following form. DO NOT
forget to enter this value. The length from the
bow follows A, the length from the stern B, the
legth from the port C and the length from the
staroard D. In the example of Fig. 1.12,
A50B80C30D15 is entered as antenna
position.

When the optional remote junction box is connected to the RS-422 channel, set the
channel to 9600 bps, 8 bit data, none parity and 1 stop bit. When the data is binary, select
the box in the Binary data line.
To monitor the data strings, press Monitor button in the menu. The data being received is
displayed at the lower half of the screen.

Digital channel
Receivable signal: 3 to 32 V voltage signal
Channel number or channel # corresponds to the label, DC00 to DC31 and DC32 to
DC63, on the DIGITAL IN terminal boards in the Junction Box.
In this menu, it is very important to enter the source name clearly in Source line so that
the channel is identified easily later on.
IMPORTANT!
Text entered in the Channel id line is shown on the playback display
automatically.
Active/Inactive state of the sensor can be switched between Close and Open in Digital
Channel Monitor menu, using Swap Active/Inactive State values button. To do so, press
Calibrate button in the Digital Channel menu.
The signal being received is monitored at the lower part of the Digital Channel Monitor
menu.

Analog channel
Receivable signal: 10 to +10 V (When 4 to 20 mA signal is connected, 470 ohms, 1W
resistor is connected across signal lines.)
Channel number or channel # corresponds to the label, AN00 to AN15, on the ANALOG
IN terminal board in the Junction Box. Analog channel must be calibrated by setting two
points. To calibrate the analog channel;
1. Press Calibrate button in Analog
Channel menu. Analog Channel

For example of engine pitch order calibration, set the pitch order handle to 8 forward.
Place the cursor onto the Calibration point 1 line and enter 8.
Press Set 1 button.
Set the pitch order handle to -7 astern.
Place the cursor onto the Calibration point 2 line and enter -7.
Press Set 2 button.

It is important to use a minus sign as below.


(1) Values referring to forward shall be positive and astern as negative (propeller pitch,
order and indication).
(2) Values referring to starboard shall be positive and port as negative (rudder indicator
and thruster order and indication).
The signal being received is monitored at the lower part of the Analog Channel Monitor
menu.
NMEA
Select the NMEA version being input to the VDR.
Vessel ID (Vessel identification)
Approval of authority, Vessel name, Vessel IMO number, Vessel MMSI number and
Vessel flag are entered in this menu.
UTC-POS (UTC and position source)
Generally, UTC and position source is a GPS receiver connected to SI00 channel.
Antenna position is the value entered in RS422 Serial Channel menu.
If the UTC source is not SI00, this menu is changed accordingly.

Configuration
This menu is used to download and upload configuration data. This menu also erases
data stored on the memory devices.

1.4 Initialization of index file


After changing software configuration, initialize the index file on the memory device so
that the collected data in the memory is erased. This procedure is also called Index
Clear or Clear Index.
IMPORTANT!
Initialize index file after software configuration.
Index clear is made through Configuration menu as below.
1. Go to Configuration menu.
2. Select 0; All device in the pull-down menu.
3. Press Clear index button.
4. Press Back button.
5. Press Reboot VR-5000 button in
Configuration menu to reboot the
system.

1.5 Making backup copy of configuration data


For future reference, download configuration data by following the instruction below to
make a copy. The configuration data file is opened up in WordPad or other editor (not
Notepad).
Copy to boot flash memory
The configuration data can be saved on the flash memory in the DCU or Compact Flash
card. If the data on the DRU is accidentally erased, the configuration in the DRU is reset
automatically at the next power on, using the settings stored on the flash memory. (Refer
to page x for erasing configuration data on flash memory.)
To save the data in the flash memory;
1. Go to Configuration menu.
2. Press Handle CONFIG-file button. Handle CONFIGRATION-file window appears. Fig.
1.18
3. Press Save (Save CONFIGURATION to BOOTFLASH:) button.

Copy to floppy disk:


The following describes how to copy the configuration data onto a floppy disk. To do so;

The file data on the floppy disk can be edited in Wordpad.

1.6 Setting Configuration with file data


The VR-5000 can be configured by using the data on the floppy disk in three steps:
uploading the data to VR-5000, loading to the system, and saving to the DRU.
Step 1. Uploading to VR-5000
To upload the data from the PC;
1. Go to Configurtion menu.
2. Press Handle CONFIG-file button.
3. Press Upload button. CONFIG-file upload window appears.
4. Select the file, and then press UPLOAD button.
5. Press Back button to go back to Handle CONFIGRATION-file menu.
Step 2. Loading to the system
6. Press Sysload button in Handle CONFIGRATION-file menu. See Fig.1.15.
7. Make sure that no error message appears. Table below list the typical error

configurator. See Section 3.1.
! Check that Buffer in use switches between 1 and 2. (0 and 1) in the

! Status LEDs on the DCU are Orange, Orange, Orange, and Green from
the left.
! Using LivePLayer software, check that VDR receives all sensor data
correctly.
! Red LED on the RAP does not light.

Chapter 2 LivePlayer
Liveplay software features Liveplay and Playback operations. This software is applicable
to the VDR software V2.07.00 and above. For VDR software V0.99.16, Interim playback
software is used.
The Liveplayer, VR-5033 consists of a program CDROM, an IEEE1394 repeater, an
AC/DC adapter, a 4P-6P IEEE1394 cable, and Operators manual.
Live play operation
Using Liveplay software, all data input to the VDR can be seen on the PC screen in real
time. The PC is connected to the REMOTE 1 port on the VDR with an Ethernet cable.
(Same connection as Web configurator is used.)

Playback operation
The data recorded on the DRU can be playbacked on the PC supporting IEEE1394
interface with Liveplay software. The PC is connected to the DRU through the IEEE1394
repeater as shown in Fig.2.1. The capacity of the AC/DC adapter is 1.0 A or more.

Chapter 3 Maintenance
3.1 Status monitor
The monitor display includes following items. The selftest result is also shown in the
monitor display by 0 (OK) or 1 (NG).
Flashdrives DRU and Backupdrives: These show the memory size of flash devices
in the DRU and Hard disk. 0*0MB means no memory device is connected.
The DRU has three flash devices, so the first number should be 3 (i.e. 3*XXXXMB).
Buffer in use: There are two buffers in the DPU: buffer 1 and buffer 2. These values
should be shown alternately.
RUN LEVEL: SYSTEM RUNNING should be shown during normal operation.
SYS time: System time of VR-5000 is displayed here. This time should be almost the
same as UTC-time.
UTC-time: Date and time from GPS receiver connected are shown here.
Record number Device Back Up: This number should increase every 15 seconds if
the data is recorded onto Removal hard disk correctly.
Record number Device DRU: This number should increase every 15 seconds if the
data is recorded onto DRU correctly. The value should be the same as Device Back
Up if the hard disk is not removed during operation.

3.2 Replacement of battery


Two batteries are used in the Data Collecting Unit to record bridge audio for 2 hours after
ships mains is shutdown. (Data other than audio is not recorded after shutdown of ships
mains.) The battery should be replaced with NP-17-121 (12V,17A) ; C/N: 000-148-410
every four years. If the battery is replaced with the other type, the type approval granted
to VR-5000 will be revoked.
Location of Batteries
Original chassis:
Batteries locate on the bottom plate of the Data Correcting Unit. To gain access to the
batteries, remove the cover of either side.
Current chassis:
Batteries locate in the Power Distribution Unit. To gain access to the batteries, draw out
the PDU.

Notice on Handling DPU


When the DPU is shipped with batteries mounted, insulate the lugs connected to black
and red wires (ringed in Fig.3.3) separately to avoid a short circuit between these lugs. If
the battery power switch is turned on during transportation accidentally, the positive and
negative terminals of the battery short-circuit, causing fire or electrical shock.

3.3 Replacement of pinger


The pinger (or acoustic beacon) on the Data Recording Unit has a built-in battery.
Change the pinger before the manufacturer warranty (six years) expires.
Necessary tool: M5 Allen wrench

Loosen these bolts to remove the pinger.

3.4 Updating system program


The system program is stored on the 64 MB flash memory card or Compact Flash card in
the DCU. To update VR-5000, change the card with the latest version. Before changing
the program, save configuration data onto the hard disk of the PC or the floppy disk.
How to make CompactFlash card
The CompactFlash card for VR-5000 is made with the following procedure.
Necessary parts:
(a) Compact Flash reader
(b) Compact Flash card
(c) VR-5000 software
1. Copy VR-5000 software (Holder name of v2[1].07.00) from CD ROM to drive C. (Open
DOS Command prompt (C:>).
2. Type cd (space)v2[1].07.00 and press Enter key. (C: v2[1].07.00,)
3. Type gf_xp (space) e: and press Enter key. e is the drive location for the flash ROM.
Message Using e: as Flash Drive . Burn flash?? appears.
4. Type y and press Enter key.

How to change CompactFlash card


To replace the card with one having the latest version;
1. With old software, save the existing configuration data onto the floppy disk or hard
disk on the PC.

2. Using existing Web Configurator (old software), clear Configuration data.


(Use Clear configblock button in Configuration menu.)
IMPORTANT! Do not forget this step.
3. Turn off the unit.
4. Replace the flash memory with the latest version.
64 MB card locates left to the hard disk in the current chassis, accessible from the
outside, while the card locates inside the DCU in the original chassis. See Figs.3.4

5. Configure the system by loading backuped configuration data. (Use Configuration
menu.)
6. Carry out index clear to erase data in the memory.

1. Make a telenet to VR5000 and login as root.
2. Type control (space) S (space) 0 and press Enter key.

4.3 Memory partition check


The partition is created on the memory devices (removable hard disk and flash memories
in the DRU) at factory. Following describes how to check memory partition.
1. Run MS-DOS on the PC.
2. Type telnet (space) 10.0.0.100, followed by Enter key.
3. Type root, followed by Return key. (login to VDR)
4. Type control (space) S (space) 0, followed by Enter key.
(This command terminates VR-5000 application software.)

4.4 How to create partition


To create partitions on the removal hard disk, follow the steps below. The partition can be
deleted by using command d.
1. Set the key on the removal hard disk to PWR ON position.
2. Turn on VR-5000 and wait until SYS1, SYS2, SYS3 and DCU light orange, orange,
orange and green respectively.
3. Run MS-DOS on the PC.
4. Type telnet (space) 10.0.0.100, followed by Enter key.
5. Type root, followed by Enter key.
5. Type control (space) S (space) 0, followed by Enter key.
6. Type fdisk (space) ls, followed by Enter key. Information about flash memory disks
in DRU appears.
7. If memory disks in DRU is assigned to b, c, d, type /#fdisk (space) /dev/sda, followed
by Enter. If the memory disks in DRU is assigned to a, b, c, type /#fdisk (space)
/dev/sdd, followed by Enter. Prompt Command (m for help): appears.
8. Type d, followed by Enter key to delete partition.
9. Type 1, followed by Enter key to select partition 1.
10. Type n, followed by Enter key for new.
11. Type p, followed by Enter. Prompt Partition number (1 4): appears.
12. Type 1, followed by Enter key. Prompt First cylinder: appears.
13. Type 1, followed by Enter key. Prompt Last cylinder or +size or +sizeM or +sizeK:
appears.
14. Type 1, followed by Enter key. Prompt Command (m for help): appears.
15. Repeat steps 12 to 15 for partitions 2 to 4.
1) Partition 2: n, p, 2, 2, 16,
2) Partition 3: n, p, 3, 17, 5004,
3) Partition 4: n, p, 4, 5005, 5005, w, (At each comma, press Enter key.)
16. Wait for several seconds until /# appears.
17. Turn off VR-5000 and on it again.

To create partitions on the flash memory in the DRU;


1. Carry out steps 1 to 7 for the removal hard disk.
2. Type /#fdisk (space) /dev/sdb(a), followed by Enter. Prompt Command (m for help):
appears.
3. Carry out steps 9 to 15. Refer to the previous page to find first and last cylinder
numbers. (d, 1, n, p, 1, 1, 1,)
4. Repeat step 3 for other partitions. (n, p, 2, 2, 2, n, p, 3, 3, 360, n, p, 3, 361, 364, w,)

5. Type /#fdisk (space) /dev/sdc(b), followed by Enter, and then carry out steps 3 and
4.
6. Type /#fdisk (space) /dev/sdd(c), followed by Enter, and then carry out steps 3 and
4.
7. Wait for several seconds until /# appears.
8. Turn off VR-5000 and on it again.

4.5 Replacement of data collecting unit (DCU)


There are two types of Data Collecting Unit (DCU): one has guide rails and the other
does not have rails. Serial numbers 1000 and after are the guide rail type chassis.
The replacement DPU (Data Processing Unit) comes with the side plates. Use these
plate as below.
1) When using DPU in old chassis;
The supplied side plates are not used. Remove the side plates from the old DPU and
fix them on both sides of the replacement DPU as shown in Figure below.

3) When using DPU in new chassis;
Fix the supplied side plates onto both sides of the DPU before inserting in the DCU.

4.6 Replacement of AC/DC power pack


The power pack, SP200-27 is shipped with the manufacture setting of 27.0 V.
Adjust the output voltage of the power pack as below after installation in the power
distribution unit.

The output voltage of the AC/DC converter and DC/DC converter in the power supply
circuit are 29.3 VDC and 27.8 VDC respectively. These voltages and battery voltage
are diode-switched to select one voltage source.

How U6 on PWR board works
U6 is a microcontroller of which tasks are;
1) Monitors the power source and set the power LED accordingly.
2) Sets the 4bit power status bit accordingly.
3) Controls the charging of the battery.
4) Decides when turn on the system (over 25 V).

5) Detects the battery is drained and turns off the system when the battery is 19 V.
If OVER 20V is false and OVER I MAX is true, the battery short circuits or discharges
deeply. In this case, the charger wait for 10 seconds and then try again. If OVER 20V is
false and OVER V FLT becomes true immediately after the charger current is applied, the
batteries are not connected. The charger starts charging when OVER V FLT becomes
false and stops when OVER V BLK becomes true. The battery charger also stops
charging if OVER V BLK does not become true for 18 hours. To reset this state, replace
the battery or switch off all power to the PDU. (V FLT: 27.3 V, V BLK: 30.0 V, and I MAX:
1.25 A)

4.7 Replacement of hard disk


Two cables are connected to the hard disk: one is an IEEE1394 cable and the other is a
power cable.

4.8 How to preset system time


When system time differs from GPS time more than 15 seconds, VR-5000 generates an
error message; SYS1: Red, SYS2: Green, SYS3: off and DCU OK: Red. The following
describes how to reset VR-5000 system time. The GPS time should be faster than the
system time at power-on.
1. Connect SXGA monitor and a keyboard to the data processing unit (DPU).

3. Turn on VR-5000 while pressing and hold down [Delete] key.
4. Wait for the BIOS screen to come up. (Keep Delete key pressed.)
5. Select Standard CMOS Feature and press [Enter] key.
6. Set time and date. Enter about 10 second behind time from GPS time.
7. Press [F10], [Y], and [Enter] keys in order to save data.
8. Restart VR-5000.
9. Lock the KB/LOCK switch.
10. Wait until system time agrees with GPS time.

2) Cannot access to Web cofigurator


Remedy
When Web configurator does not open;
(1) Check that IP address of the PC is other than 10.0.0.100.
(2) Check that cross/null LAN cable is used.
(3) Check that the IP address of REMOTE 1 connector (ETH1) is 10.0.0.100 in the
status monitor connected to VGA connector on the DCU.
(4) Connect COM1 port of the PC to Service COM1 port on the DCU with serial
(RS-232C) cable. Run the HyperTerminal on the PC and enter a command,
ifconfig, and then press Enter key to get information.

3) Storage failure error or DRU failure


Remedy
When a storage (DRU) failure error message is displayed;
(1) Turn off the system and on it again.
(2) Check that VDR software is V2.07 or above. If not, update the system.
(3) Check the number of Flash devices in the Main page of Web configurator. If 0*0 is
displayed as shown in Fig.4.f, the flash memory devices or hard disk is not read
correctly. A telnet command, control (space) d (Enter key) also shows the
memory size.

(4) Check the connection of the DRU to the DCU. (Check that Firewire connector is
connected securely on both DCU and DRU.)
(5) Carry out Index Clear.
(6) If index clear does not eliminate the problem, carry out Configuration clear and
Index Clear.

4) Time difference too big


Remedy
Adjust system time, referring to Section 4.8.

5) Grabber failure
Remedy
(1) Check that the radar is turned on.
(2) Check that the connection in the DCU is tight. VD1 BNC connectors on the PDU
are connected to the bottom DB connector on the Frame grabber board in the
DPU. VD2 BNC connectors are connected to the second DB connector from the
bottom.
(3) Check the video and sync signals. The signal is VGA compatible.
- Video signal level: 0.5 to 1 Vpp
(Minimum sync signal is 50 mV when a composite sync signal is used.)
- Horizontal sync signal: Max. 80 kHz, positive or negative
- Vertical sync signal: Max. 75 Hz

(4) Check that video channel is configured properly.


(5) Check that the sync signal does not have any distortion.

6) No serial signal
RS422 IF card in the DPU receives serial data from the JB unit located at the bottom
part of the DCU via the DB37-HD78 cable assembly of which pin assignment is
shown in Fig.4.14. The data received by terminals SI00 to SI07 is output from J46 on
the JB board, Mother and SI08 to SI15 (optional) from J47.

1) Audio level adjustment
The IF-5200 includes two identical audio mixer and attenuator circuits. Mixed are
Microphone and speaker signals. The output signal level is adjusted to 0 dBm (2.2 Vp-p)
with DS1 and DS3. Connect an oscilloscope between #3 and #4 on CN9 and select
segment of DS1 for 2.2 Vp-p. The output of Channel 2 is #7 and #8 on CN9.
Factory-setting: 10 dB (ON); 20 dB (OFF); 30 dB (OFF) and 40 dB (OFF).

5 Verification of Installation and Function.


5.1 Implementation of System Operation
General operation

When off the power supply from ship's mains is cut off, VDR
power should shift to internal battery backup mode.

On cutting off the power supply from ship's mains, it should be


displayed by lamp.
As long as the system operates in normal condition with
acquiring all necessary data and signals, no error should be

After starting to run the VDR system, the recording process
should be automatically started without any operating controls.

Data recording should be terminated when all power switch on
