Death in Postmodern Culture: The Production of Space and the Transformation of the Memorial
Practices in the Digital Era (summary)
The main purposes of the research were to identify postmodern place of death and relations
to/with it, as an aspect of social-cultural system and to analyze new practices of memorialization in
relation to postmodern transformations of cultural, social, political, economic structures. Death
studies, in social-cultural perspective, can show the main patterns of mentality.
Critical analysis of the todays places of encountering with death and dead and of the
transformed memorial practices is done with the regard to the theory of production of space,
introduced by Harvy and Lefevr. The historical context of the phenomena of death and memory and
peoples relation to it is closely studied in the First Chapter. Main points of the transformation are
made by using critical analysis of the works of Ph. Aries, J. Le Goff, U. Lotman, J. Baudrillard and
other fundamental researchers in the sphere of death and mentality history.
The new characteristics of death and practices of memorialization formed under the
influence of new space virtual reality are in the focus of this paper and presented in the Second
Chapter. They are studied in the context of the search of the postmodern place of death through the
analysis of fundamental changes that have shaped todays way of production of the social order.
These changes include, but not limited to informatisation, communication, technologisation,
digitalization, secularization, power relations, and fragmentation.
