LIBURDI

THE GAS TURBINE CYCLE

~
"'\~\ ~::f
~

A comparison

between the working cycle of a piston engine and a turbo-jet engine

LIBURDI

COMPRESSOR COMPONENTS
Compressor components (blades, vanes and
discs) operate at relatively low temperature,
particularly at front stages
The rotating parts (especially disks) have high
centrifugal loads, so high tensile strength and
strength to weight ratios are desirable
Since all the components are subject to
aerodynamic impulses, high cycle fatigue
strength is a consideration
Corrosion and erosion resistance area also
important since the components will frequently
be exposed to wet or dusty conditions
Materials: Alloy steels, 400 series stainless
steels, PH stainless steels, Ti Alloys and Ni-Fe
base superalloys (high compression ratios)
4

LIBURDI

TURBINE DISKS

.
.
.

Turbine disks are subject to high loads in the

hub and in the blade attachments (fir tree)
Temperatures are moderately low in the hub
but can be high in the rim depending on the
blade and cooling design
Disks are also subject to high cycle fatigue
loads from blade vibration and low cycle
fatigue loads from start/stop cycles

A combination of high tensile strength and

fatigue resistance, combined, In some
designs, moderate creep resistance is
required

Materials: high strength steels, 12Cr stainless

steels and Fe-Ni base superalloys

LIBURDI

COMBUSTION COMPONENTS
.

Combustion components operate at high temperatures with low to

moderate loads

Thus creep, thermal fatigue and oxidation resistance are all

important
The geometry of combustor parts is complex, so the alloys must be
readily formed, machined and fabricated
Materials: Lower strength and high ductility Ni-Fe and Co-base
superalloy sheet materials

LIBURDI

TURBINE VANES
.

First stage turbine vanes have the

most severe temperature
exposure in the engine

Alloys must be able to withstand

thermal fatigue loading and
oxidation

.
.
.

Higher creep strength is required

to withstand gas bending loads on
cantilevered latter stage vanes
Complex geometries require good
castability
Materials: Cast Co or Ni-based
superalloys

TURBINE BLADES

.

.

Blades are subject to high

centrifugal loads at high
temperatures
Cooled designs also have high
thermal stresses
Creep strength is of primary
importance
Alloys must be able to withstand
thermal and high cycle fatigue
loading and oxidation
Materials: Precipitation-hardened
Ni based superalloys

LIBURDI

TURBINE BLADES (VS. BUCKETS)

NoeL

Buckets are driven by impulse

(change in momentum) derived
from turning the gas flow
. Blades derive their work
reaction forces due to the
acceleration of the gas flow
. In practice most turbine
"blades" use a combination of
these mechanisms
