Elyze McDonald Iriarte to be Sworn-In as 7th Superior Court

Trial Judge
On Tuesday, November 29, 2016, Elyze McDonald Iriarte will be sworn-in as a
judge for the Superior Court of Guam. The investiture ceremony will take place in the
atrium of the Guam Judicial Center at 4 p. m.
The 33rd Guam Legislature confirmed Iriartes appointment as a judge on
November 22, 2016. Iriarte was appointed by Governor Eddie Baza Calvo to fill the
vacancy on the Superior Court bench left by the resignation of Judge James L. Canto II.
Iriarte received a B.A. from the University of Chicago and a J.D. from the
University of Southern California Law School in Los Angeles, California. She has been a
member of the State Bar of California, The Hawaii State Bar, and is currently a member
of the Guam Bar Association. Iriarte has spent much of her career practicing civil
litigation, but she has also practiced employment, procurement and maritime and
admiralty law. Iriartes experience in criminal law stems from her work as a law clerk to
the Honorable John S. Unpingco, the former Chief Judge of the District Court of Guam.
Iriarte handled federal criminal cases including the District Court of Guams first
sequestered jury.
