Exhaust Gas Neutraliser HJ 90 N and HJ 90 V

for the absorption and scrubbing of gassing chemicals
Operation Manual
1. General
The HJ 90 gas neutraliser is suitable for the absorption of gases escaping during the
discharge by means of compressed air of railway tank wagons, tank trucks or transport
containers, as well as for the continuous operation of storage tanks containing liquid
chemicals with gassing or vapouring characteristics. It can also be used at filling places to
absorb the gases escaping freely during filling processes. Depending on its installation place
within a plant the gas neutralizer can be operated as a self-aspirating unit, the lengths of
exhaust air pipes may demand to install a chemical-resistant fan in order to increase the
aspiration effect.

2. Construction
The HJ 90 N and HJ 90 V exhaust gas neutraliser consists of a tank for the scrubbing fluid,
made of translucent natural coloured polyethylene. The Venturi scrubber has a head function
and is fitted with a flange. The full tapered spray nozzle is easily accessible via a screwed
joint 110 mm with blind cover (Pos.6) so, it can be cleaned if necessary by opening this
fitting hole (thread 11 1/4 "). Facing the Venturi tube, the air blow-out pipe is fitted onto the
scrubbing liquid tank. The demister is installed inside this pipe and prevents the escape of
droplets from the (air) blow-out pipe. It may have a free ending, or can be connected to a
central ventilation system. A sample-taking tap for regular checking of the pH-value of the
scrubbing liquid can be fitted into the liquid-conducting pressure tube 32 mm.
HJ 90 V Special
The gas neutraliser type HJ 90 V is designed especially for media emitting extremely
corrosive and dangerous gases (i.e. hydrochloric acid ) or an increased vapour pressure (i.e.
ammonia).
The construction of the HJ 90 V differs from the normal execution of the HJ 90 N by the
following: the HJ 90 V is equipped with a holding bin with 7,1 liters capactiy instead of the
emerging pipe of the pressure tube. Additionally the Venturi tube is longer so that its mouth
submerges by 15 mm into the scrubbing liquid when the
apparatus is not being in operation. So a gastight locking ( water lock) is provided.
When the HJ 90 V is being operated the pump first fills the holding bin inside the pressure
pipe. This causes the liquid level inside the scrubbing liquid tank to fall until the end the the
prolongated Venture tube will be free and a normal scrubbing will be effected.
When being switched off, the holding bin is emptied by the pump and the status "Venturi tube
submerged" is achieved again.

-23. Operation
The scrubbing fluid tank has to be filled with water up to the marked spot. In case of freezing
temperatures add an anti-freeze.
As a safety system preventing overfilling, there is an overflow 40 mm with inner thread
R1 1/2" " fitted to the scrubbing fluid tank. Any excess liquid has to be caught and
fed to the neutralisation plant. The submersion pump is installed into the lid of the
scrubbing fluid tank. This pump feeds the medium to be scrubbed through a pressure pipe
via the fully tapered spray nozzle into the Venturi scrubber and produces an underpressure
so the vapours to be scrubbed are automatically aspirated via the aspiration sockets.
In case of long-distance gas aspiration tracks or different aspiration spots it is necessary to
install a chemical resistant fan to support the gas flow. Inside the Ventur scrubber the
washing of the aspirated vapours is done by intense spraying of the scrubbing liquid
into the scrubbing fluid tank. The overpressure produced is decreased by the air blow-out
tower which also houses the demister preventing the exit of droplets from the absorber.
When eliminating gases or vapours during the discharge by compressed air of transport
contaiiners the quantity of gas fed towards the absorber must be controlled. In no case it
should exceed 90 m/h. This controlling is effected by the gradual opening of the valve at the
dischorge coupling of the transport container. Before the discharge process is finished, close
the valve of the filling pipe in any case. This valve may be opened again slowly in order to
evacuate gradually the pressure from the transport container.

4. Points of special attention

Before starting the tank discharge process put the exhaust gas neutralizer into operation.
In no case the storage tank to be filled must be exposed to overpressure. The ventilation
socket of the storage tank has to be fitted on one side with a T-piece which has to be
equipped with a ball-check valve on one side, and to be connected to the gas neutraliser on
the other side (please refer to the piping model).
The gas neutraliser HJ 90 V must only be installed into ventilation pipe systems
equipped with a closed overpressure/underpressure safety device.
The gas-air-mixture stowed inside the pressure transport tank must be decreased carefully
and slowly by gradual opening of the valve installed in the filling pipe. The regulation is done
by hand the easiest way, and it is obligatory that the operator stays at least 5 to 10 minutes
with the plant, and carefully opens the valve.
The work being finished the gas neutraliser may be switched off according the specific
working conditions. It is possible to equip the neutraliser with a time processor for the
periodical gas absorption of the storage tank.

5. Continuous Operation of storage tanks for chemicals

For the absorption of continuously produced gases as for e.g. with storage tanks with very
corrosive gases, or discharging processes, the gas neutraliser is constantly in operation, and
due to the underpressure necessarily involved in this operation, it automatically sucks in the
gases to be eliminated and washes them out.
If this shows to be the normal operation situation, please, contact us, we then will
recommend the use of a pump with a threephase induction motor.

6. Maintenance
Generally this neutralizer is free of maintenance.
However, we recommend to check regulary the jet nozzle as well as the demister for
possible salt exudations respectively layers which are caused by crystallizations and
which are the reason for considerable loss in capacity.
Normally possible layers may be removed with warm water. Please, care for safety
instructions! (Gloves, glasses)
The scrubbing water has to be changed - depending on the gases to be washed out - as
soon as its pH-value will deceed by one graduation (pH 6-sour) or exceed by two steps (pH
9-alkaline).
This can be easily checked by means of indicator paper.
Afer a certain operation period it is possible to determinate fixed inspection intervals.
