Bases for Segmenting Consumer Markets
A market segment consists of a group of customers who share a
similar set of needs and wants. The marketers task is to identify the
appropriate member and nature of market segments and decide
which one(s) to target. The major segmentation variables are:
geographic, demographic, psychographic, and behavioral
segmentation.
1. Geographic Segmentation
Geographic segmentation divides the market into geographical units
such as nations, states, regions, countries, cities, or neighborhoods.
In a growing trend called grassroots marketing such activities
concentrate on getting as close and personally relevant to individual
customers as possible.
2. Demographic Segmentation
Demographic variables are so popular with marketers is that theyre
often associated with consumer needs and wants. Some of the
variables are:
Age and life-cycle stage: consumer wants and abilities change
with age, and life stage defines a persons major concern.
Gender: men and women have different attitudes and behave
differently.
Income: income segmentation is a long-standing practice in
such categories as automobiles, clothing, cosmetics, financial
services, and travel. However, income doesnt always predict
the best customers for a given product.
Generation: are members that share the same major cultural,
political, and economic experiences and have similar outlooks
and values. Four main generation cohorts of consumers are:
o Millennials: or Gen Y born between 1979 and 1994. From the
approaches to reach and persuade them: online buzz,
student ambassadors, unconventional sports, cool events,
computer games, videos, street teams.
o Gen X: born between 1964 and 1978.
o Baby Boomers: born between 1946 and 1964.
o Silent generation: born between 1925 and 1945 and they
are redefining what old age means.
3. Psychographic Segmentation
In psychographic segmentation, buyers are divided into
different groups on the basis of psychological/personality
traits, lifestyle, or values. People with the same demographic
group can exhibit very different psychographic profiles. One of
the most popular commercially available classification
systems based on psychographic measurements is Strategic
Business Insights (SBI) VALS framework.
4. Behavioral Segmentation
In behavioral segmentation, marketers divide buyers into
groups on the basis of their knowledge of, attitude toward, use
of, or response to a product.
Needs and benefits: everyone has different benefits
even from same needs and wants.
Decision roles: people play five roles in a buying
decision: initiator, influencer, decider, buyer, and users.
User and usage real user and usage related variables:
o Occasions: well defined temporal aspects of a
consumers life.
o User status: nonuser, ex-user, potential user, first
time users
o Usage rate: light, medium. And heavy product
users.
o Buyer-readiness stage: aware of the product,
unaware, informed, interested, desire the product,
intend to buy.
o Loyalty status: hard core loyals, split, shifting,
switchers loyals.
Attitude: enthusiastic, positive, indifferent, negative, and
hostile.
Multiple bases: combining different behavioral basis
together.
