Description of the artifact and how it meets the standard and criteria:
During a building professional development day, I listened to a colleague explain data
walls and data notebooks. I was very intrigued and within two days, I had my own 4D
Data Wall for my students. My students were doing well in their ELA scores, but I
believe that they were missing the motivational piece. I wanted them to understand that
they could make a difference in their scores if they took the time to reflect on them, and
make small changes to their week. We took a few days to talk about what is is an
attainable goal because when I introduced the data wall, almost every student wanted
their goal to be 10/10, or 20/20 for spelling. We used instructional time to discuss what
is best based on the time we have (one week per story), and how we have done in the
past. We set a classroom goal for each component of their ELA tests. Within a few
weeks, we saw an improvement in their scores and their motivation.
Reflection on the artifact:
I took two days to teach a lesson on SMART goals in my classroom at the beginning of
the school year. We each made a school goal and a personal goal, but I had no time to
reflect on them, and they went unnoticed. When I listened to the presentation on Data
Walls and Notebooks, I knew that I wanted to implement this into my room. We have
another lesson on SMART goals and how we can relate them to our tests on Fridays. I
told the students that I wanted them to make achievable goals that they would be proud
of. We discussed that at first, we will make goals for the classroom as a whole, and
what that would look like. We created SMART goals for spelling, comprehension,
grammar and vocabulary. Then, we discussed how what we could do to achieve that

goal. We came up with many different ideas and started to implement them. At first, it
was hard to keep up with because it was a new component in the classroom and I had 5
students that I read their tests to each week, but eventually the students scores climbed
higher and our discussion/reflections improved. In four week we made our spelling and
comprehension goal, but was just shy of our vocabulary and grammar goal. Due to this
data, I made a change in my instruction, and am now teaching grammar and vocabulary
differently. I am seeing more involvement in the lesson and scores are starting to
improve. Next year, I will be implementing this in my first week of school and hopefully,
will see the same improvements in student achievement.
