Clean schools competition gains momentum

Sanjay Goundar
THE Lautoka City Councils initiative to create
a clean school environment around the district
is bearing very positive results.
Since the inception of the Clean Schools
Competition in 2011 many urban and rural
schools have undergone massive improvement
in enhancing their school environment.
Many schools with implementation of
the 3R concept of Recycling, Reducing and
Reusing have given a major facelift to their

institutes.
It has been seen that schools in both
the urban and rural categories have worked
tirelessly to beautify their compounds using
recyclable materials such as plastic bottles,
tyres, old drums and many other items lying
idle.
LCC chief executive officer Jone
Nakauvadra revealed that they are glad the
main purpose of organizing the competition is
being achieved.
Mr Nakauvadra stressed a clean and

beautified school environment will in turn

create a very conducive learning environment
for both the teachers and the students.
He emphasized that this program ensures
that school children who are the agents of
change realize the importance of looking after
the environment.
Chief Guest at this years clean schools
competition awards function Director Primary
Education Hem Chand pointed out that if a
clean school can have a positive impact on
learning, it is certainly worth the time, effort

and investment.
Mr Chand revealed that the Ministry of
Education fully supports the clean schools
program and wants to see all schools in the
district taking part in it.
Meanwhile, Lautoka Arya Samaj Primary
School scooped the main award in the clean
schools competitions urban category for the
third consecutive year while Drasa Primary

Cyclone Alert
WE are well into the Cyclone season in Fiji and we
are starting to get the feel of it.
The humid condition that we now feel is an
indication that a cyclone or two is developing.
Nine-months ago, the people of Fiji experienced the
devastation caused by Tropical Cyclone Winston
which resulted in the death of close to fifty-people
in the country.
The damaged it caused to infrastructure and the
agricultural sector and houses were extensive.
The people of Fiji should be thankful to the

to local stakeholders who went out of their way to
assist their fellow Fijians.
People have begun rebuilding their lives but
nine-months on some of the victims have yet to find
themselves a secure home.
Some villagers in the outer Islands like Koro
which was the most affected by TC Winston, a
Category 5 cyclone, are still living in make shift
homes that include tents, with some only tarpaulins
as their shelter.
And now with the news of two earthquakes that
recently hit New Zealand and our dear Asian friends
in Japan which was followed by a Tsunami, is sure to
cause panic among people of this region that we may
experience something of this nature in days to come,
if not the earthquake or Tsunami.

It is the true testimony of the effects of Climate

Change.
People should begin bracing themselves for the
worst. We feel for those that have yet to complete
their homes or are running out of time due to the
unavailability of building materials.
The Government of the day immediately after
TC Winston that hit us back in February this year,
had taken the first step with its cyclone assistance
scheme to assist those in need. But due to some
unforeseen circumstances, help had been delayed in
some quarters with the reason being the shortage of
timber supplies.
But this problem seems to have eased with
people now taking advantage of the availability of
building materials and rebuilding as quickly as they
can before another natural disaster strikes.

www.epapergallery.com

For now, the Meteorological Services in Nadi

will be our best guide for the next four to fivemonths.
They will keep track of what is being formed
around the region and will broadcast it to the people
via the media outlets.
This is the season when people should seriously
consider listening to weather bulletins on radios or
reading it online as this will help them prepare well
for the worst in advance.
And now our only hope to be spared from these
natural disasters is to PRAY that it does not come
our way for now.

Breast Cancer Advocacy and organizations,
schools and the Ministry of Health create this

Organizations in the country mostly went
full force into fundraising efforts for breast

Meanwhile,
for
the

levels.
The first advocacy was held on October 18

members together with Ministry of Health
officials thoroughly outlined the symptoms
of breast cancer to the students, teachers and
parents.
The same advocacy was taken across to the

with their female family members the need

to visit their doctor at their earliest when the
symptoms occur.
The Health officials also demonstrated self
checks for breast cancer and advised on the
best time during the female monthly cycles for
the self checks.
According to SI Lautoka President Ranjini

this vital awareness and this year more than

Spirit of Diwali celebrations

DIWALI is one of those festivals where the

celebrations starts weeks before and lingers on
for weeks after.
Although this year the actual day of Diwali
was on October 30 but schools, organizations
and religious groups held their events well
before which ensured a great lead up to the
main day.
The celebrations also inevitably results in
abundance of colors all around with the colorful
clothes, decorations, rangolis and sweets.
The events also usually have dance
performances and dramas which adds on to the
festivities.
Likewise, some organizations and groups

organized their events after Diwali resulting in

the lingering essence of the revelry.
We are fortunate to be living in a multiracial
country where people of all cultures come
together whole heartedly to celebrate Diwali.
During this magical time it gladdens the
heart to see all races dressing up in Diwali wear
which enhances the cultural bonding.
A classic case is that of an iTaukei village
in Keiyasi in the interior of Sigatoka where the
whole village dressed up, sang, danced and
cooked to enjoy the day.
There is also a lot of innovative ideas
during this season and the Lautoka Market
vendors took the cake this year with the breath
taking and extremely colorful decorations at
the market.

Girmit Centenary
Celebrations
Zareena Bi

Students in Girmit days outfit were part of the major celebration to mark 100 years of the arrival of the last ship
Sutlej V from India

NATIONWIDE celebrations was held earlier this month to mark 100

years since the arrival of Sutlej V, the 87th ship which brought the last
lot of the Girmityas or indentured labourers from India to Fiji.
During the celebrations in Lautoka at the Girmit Centre on November
11 the chief guest, Attorney General Mr Aiyaz Sayed Khaiyum stressed
on the need for the celebrations to recognize the immense contribution
of the Girmityas in the development of the nation.
It is important to commemorate an event that marked the end of
one of the darkest periods yet one of the most significant periods of
Fijian history.
The legacy of those indentured labourers can be still seen in
Fiji until this day. It is not only the lives of the descendants but the
determined and tenacious spirit of the Girmityas that serves as a source
of inspiration for all Fijians today.
That legacy has made Fiji a proud nation today because despite
the immense adversity faced by the Girmityas they forged new lives for
themselves in Fiji and ultimately overcame the struggle.
He also stressed to the large crowd of students and guests present
that the history of Girmityas is also the history of Lautoka.
A great many Girmityas came to Lautoka to work here or in the
surrounding areas clearing land or working in the Sugar cane fields.
As you know Lautoka was one of the main centers of the sugar
industry and its development mirrored the health of the industry. When
Lautoka grew big enough in 1929 to be declared a town it was in a large
part because of the efforts of the Girmityas years before.
Meanwhile, the Indian High Commissioner to Fiji Mr Vishvas
Sapkal also echoed the sentiments of the Attorney General at the event
and informed that to mark the occasion an essay competition was
organized at all three Universities in the country.
He added that all winners are females and as their prize they will
tour India for three weeks in December.
The High Commission has also donated $97,560 to the University
of the South Pacific to promote Hindi language in the country.

Gandhi Bhawan stronger than

Winston
NOVEMBER

25, 2016

Maika Kasami

THE End of this school year merely marks

the end of a chapter in life and the opening of
another one. The opening of the next chapter
depends on how much you value and treasure
education as it is your passport for your
tomorrow.
These were the words of chief guest
Lautoka City Council chief executive officer
Jone Nakauvadra during the Gandhi Bhawan
Primary School annual awards function
ceremony on November 23.
Mr. Nakauvadra said 2016 has been a very
challenging year due to TC Winston.
And the destruction left behind by TC Winston
was still visible at the school.
But as a strong nation and with the
strong support from Government towards
Education which no other government has
done previously, we have moved forward with
a lot of lessons learnt and as they say We are
stronger than Winston.
He said teachers have done their utmost to
help students by encouraging and motivating to

perform at optimum and achieve the end result.

Nakauvadra said receiving an award is a time
of celebration and triumph. It is a very proud
moment for the students, parents and teachers
who have all played their part in the end result.
The students have worked hard with focus,
determination and discipline.
Your parents have made many sacrifices
in the last few years and provided you with the
enabling environment at home, financial, and
moral support, to help you through this phase.
Parents are the best teachers and believe
me whatever every parent says or does is
because they genuinely believe that it is in the
best interests of their children ,it is inevitable
that they have high expectations of the end
result, Nakauvadra said.
Meanwhile, Krishan Kumar of Year 802
was named the Dux of the school.
Nakauvadra also congratulated the School
Manager Brijesh Chand for his dedicated
service to the school for the last 25 years.

Prasad wins Lautoka Open

HIS brother Munesh Prasad had won the GEOTECH Drilling Services
Limited sponsored 18-holes individual stroke Lautoka Season Opening
event in July at the Lautoka Golf Club.
This inspired Praneel Prasad to work his socks off and go a step
further to claim the 85th Shreedhar Motors/ Ford-sponsored Lautoka
Open Golf Championship, a title that even former world number one
and Fijian International Vijay Singh had laid his hands on back in the
early eighties.
The Nadi Airport Golf Club member scored a record 1-under 102
over 27-holes to have his name pinned on the honours board.
Former Lautoka Open and club champion James Krishna almost forced
a play-off, but missed a crucial putt on the last hole to finish on 103.
The club captain had to be content in taking out the A-grade gross
title.
In other results as reported, newcomer, Ritesh Prakash won the
overall nett tittle on 93 nett. National rep Roneel Prakash scored 106
with fellow rep Olaf Allen Jr finishing 107 to take out the second and
third spot respectively in the A-grade Gross division.
Veteran, Abdul Jalal was the champion in the B-grade on 111, with
Anil Prasad grabbing the Grade title on 129.
VK Singh of Suva won the A- grading nett title on 99, with the
ever consistent Lawrence John winning the B-grade on 94, with Air
Terminal Services Ltd employee grabbing the C-grade title on 102.
James Pridgeon of Pacific Harbour played consistently to account for
the best consistency score on a gross 72 with Olaf Allen Sr grabbing
the Seniors category on 145.
Shreedhar Motors/ Ford came up with their 3rd consecutive open
championship which saw golfers from around the country fighting
tooth and nail to win the prestigious event.
As many as 72 golfers participated in the 27 holes event which had

Lautoka athletes do the impossible

THE Adidas slogan Impossible is Nothing

can only be said but seldom practiced.
The Lautoka Primary Schools Athletics
Association (LPSA) athletes have been proving
everyone wrong for the past three years without
getting noticed.
Like they say, they do their talking on the
field rather than off it.
LPSAA president Johnson Lee explains
how they have been overcoming obstacles for

the past three years and to reign once again at

the 2016 FMF Chow Games at Lawaqa Park in
Nahigatoka.
The young Maroons won the Boys and
overall title totaling 25-gold.
Jasper William High School has done it on
three occasions, Natabua has done it once and I
feel proud to say that Lautoka Primary School
athletes also join the honors list winning it
three-years consecutively since 2014 but
without any sponsor.
What we have achieved is through hard

work and unity of the teachers, coaches, and

the head of the schools.
I would also mention the support we
received from the Senior Education officer and
the Education office in Lautoka and also the
principal of Natabua High School for allowing
the use of their grounds and the training
equipments.
And pivotal of them all are the parents
and our athletes who worked tirelessly to
bring glory to Lautoka. Its through their sheer
determination that we have achieved our goal

17

for the third year running, Lee added.

Lee revealed that competition at the Games
is getting tougher each year with athletes
from Nadroga, Navosa and Ra being very
competitive.
He however has pleaded to business houses
in Lautoka to show their support and recognize
the achievement of the team and kindly requests
for sponsorship next year as they prepare to
defend their title for the fourth year.

Narayan, elder brother Umesh Narayan, ,
current Suva rep Poasa Bainivalu and veteran

In their third game they lost to head office

In the semifinal they beat Punjas Flour 2-1 after

Each and every player played to our game
plan set by our coach and we are happy to have

other sponsors for their contribution towards
the success of the team.
We are indeed pleased that we have
managed to retain the title that we had won
two-years ago in Nausori. The players stood
firm to the task and this contributed to our
success yet again, Khan said.
Without sponsors a team cannot perform
and we were fortunate to have also had people
from Great Pacific Hotel and Sadhai Autos
co-sponsoring the team with the main sponsor
New-Way Electrical.
Meanwhile, the main Fiji Muslim team
failed to win the title at home losing in the
semifinal. The last time they had won the
tournament was back in 2012 in Lautoka when
most of the current veteran players were in the

Pacific Cup is fast paced action

19

Maika Kasami

PLAYERS in Fiji are well versed with the

shorter version of football which is the onehour game.
Tournaments in Fiji were played in the
abbreviated time in the past before the recent
implementation of the 90-minute soccer which
has now been enforced as per world governing
body FIFA regulations.
During the launching of the 2016 Rams
Cleaning Pacific Cup tournament in Nadi, talks
were being made to have the game played for
ninety-minutes in future.
Fiji FA president Rajesh Patel had said
they would look into the matter after receiving
requests from teams concerned.
He said the 2016 tourney (which has
culminated) would use the normal sixty-minute
soccer due to the high number of teams (10).
The Pacific Cup which has been played since
2012 beginning in Auckland, New Zealand has
always adhered to sixty-minute soccer.
Nadi won the inaugural Pacific Cup
tournament in 2012 and also went on to win in
2013 and 2015 before claiming this years title
The JACKS/Professional Valuation Nadi
side also became the first team to win the
Pacific Cup in Fiji and at their very home
ground, Prince Charles Park.

VERETI Dickson was undoubtedly named
the player of the tournament during the Rams
Cleaning Services Pacific Cup tournament
2016 held at Prince Charles Park in Nadi.
The lanky stopper had been on top of his
game since Day 1.
Dickson stood strong under the post
beginning with Nadis first up 2-0 win against
Ba, and then their 1-0 win over Labasa in their
second pool match.
New Zealand FFI side was the first team
to have scored against Nadi in pool play when
they upset the defending champions 1-0.
The Jetsetters were back in winning
form defeating a formidable AIFA side from
Australia by 3-0 to progress to the semifinal
with 9-points.
In the semifinal, Dickson could not prevent
an own goal from trickling in when a defensive
blunder was credited as an own goal to Nadi
defender Luke Rawadamu. USA 1-0 Nadi.
But then Nadi showcased a second half
master class when they fought with a vengeance

and complete dominance to outclass the touring

USA side 2-1 with goals to Anish Khem and
replacement Andrew Naicker.
In total, the Greens scored 9-goals and
conceded two - in the five-day tournament.
Nadi co-coach Marika Namaqa said after the
final that the Pacific Cup win was one of the
main highlights of his soccer career.
Namaqa, who was renowned for his
powerful strikes at goal and being part of the
stonewall Nadi defence also acknowledged the
contribution of Babs Khan towards the team
as they together formed a perfect coaching
combination.
And the players of-course for their tireless
efforts and the time they have each devoted
towards playing their hearts out for Nadi, said
Namaqa who also took time out in between
to feature for the Canada veterans team in
the tournament that was sponsored by RC
