Statement of Purpose

Introduction:
I am a Mechanical Engineering graduate from Bhai Gurdas Institute of Engineering and
Technology that provides good faculties & facilities in Engineering. Bachelors degree in
Engineering is a Four year course, affiliated to Punjab Technical University & AICTE (All
India Council for Technical Education). I wish to pursue my higher studies in Surveying from
University of Otago.
Professional and Educational Background:
I would like to introduce myself as an active, diligent, optimistic and self-made person. As a
kid I was very imaginative and innovative in nature, I was very keen to draw a collection of
car and building designs and amazingly nowadays I can see the modern vehicle appearances
are very similar to those drawings. With each passing years, I realized that my career would
be around the field that dealt with development and design of product. My interest for
creating new dimensions and spreading my knowledge of creativity led me to select
Mechanical Engineering as my field of higher studies.
As a student of Engineering, I was introduced to the world of structural and product design,
Material properties, strength, manufacturing and construction. Along with my formal
education I took my first step to develop my entrepreneurship skills by joining a business
with my old friend. We were working as subcontractors engaged with the installation of
private electricity poles, 6.6KV Transformers with accessories in the village farmlands
directly paid by farmers. It was a great learning experience for me, within the field I learned
various challenges faced in a business. Managing a workforce is not limited to just arranging
the labour and tools, it is more like a psychological game where one need to finish the work
in time with limited resources. Even with successful execution of work we had to face some
complaints due to faulty items supplied by vendors and thus inspired me to acquire more in
depth knowledge about the field of construction.
As a mandatory part of University curriculum during 3rd semester I did a 1 month Project
work in Calcutta Port Trust associated with the implementation of Just in Time Process in
the Iron Ore Tippling and Stacking section. The main idea behind Just in Time methodology
is to create a program with an objective to minimise the waiting period of raw material
during processing and as well as reduce the inventory cost. To achieve the objective it was
identified that proper workability of material handling equipment like forklift, conveyors,
and stacker reclaimers were very crucial. So we emphasized primarily on preparing a
scheduled preventive maintenance program with dedicated enforcement without any

hindrance on the operation. The program showed small traces of improvement in the
operation cost though in the long run it may result in a good achievement. Our initiative
were widely appreciated by various divisions of the organization and by our mentor Mr. Ajit
Kaul (Sr. Engineer G&C Division).
During my six months of professional training in the seventh semester of my studies, I got
the chance to work with one of the leading automobile spare parts manufacturing company
GNA DURAPARTS located in Hoshiarpur, Punjab and acquired a great deal of technical
knowledge in the field of Computer Aided Designing and manufacturing. I received an
intensive practical training in the research and development Department. The exposure to
CAD technology aided me in the preparation of final year Project on Composite Construction
and Sustainability.
I joined JYOTI STRUCTURES LTD. in March 2009 designated as Executive Engineer.
Working with one of the well known multi national company gave me the first insight into
transmission line engineering and construction field. In the preliminary stage I was trained
in the field of survey, foundation, erection, stringing, Cash Flow management, Project
Planning and Project Coordination. I got the opportunity to learn how to gainfully meet the
challenges posed by the changing client requirements and adaptive planning that was
required to satisfy the client by meeting their specification. After the completion of my
training, I was given the position of Executive Engineer in the Indias first interstate
+ 500KV Mundra Mahendergarh HVDC Transmission Line Project awarded by Adani

Power Ltd. While working in the auspicious project my exhibition of managerial skills in the
site and maintaining cordial relations with clients resulted in a great accomplishment and
the project was completed and handed over before the time period specified in the contract.
I joined Hardayal Engineering works (P) Ltd in 2010 as a Technical Associate CAD with the
responsibility to assist the Design Engineer on designing and drafting of Paper Machines.
The company deals with manufacturing and installation of complete sets of Head Box,
Perforated Rolls, Dryers, Slices, Vacuum systems, Press, Calender Rolls, Fourdrinier
Assembly, Centrifugal Pumps, Hydrapulper and Chest involving in the various sectors of
paper industry in India, Thailand, Iran and Sri lanka . I was working on the CAD platform
( Solidworks and Autocad) for the time span of one year.
During the end month of year 2011 I got an overseas job offer. I have attended the interview
in September 2011 and finally after all the negotiations they offered me a position. I joined
HG POWER TRANSMISSION SDN BHD, MALAYSIA as a Site Engineer in June 2012. The
company is doing business for almost 26 years in Malaysia. HG Power is the turnkey
contractor in Malaysia and have high contributions in Electrical high voltage transmission
line and substation projects. HG Power did projects not limited to Malaysia but have a strong
presence in Bangladesh, Indonesia and Papua New Guinea. I was given assignments time to
time with direct instructions from Senior General Manager (Projects). The first project I got

assigned was a LIVE LINE PROJECT where the major job was to replace the Old Earthwire
with a new Optical Ground wire. My role as a site engineer was giving instructions to the
contractors and their workers. It was a great challenge for me because while working at site I
need to learn the local language. While working in a remote place I learned the safety
features, the local communication skills and living with limited resources. This lifestyle made
me to think strong and fight with hard circumstances. After finishing the project I received a
call from Managing Director and he congratulated me and upgraded my position as a Project
Engineer. New project (Chembong-Rantau 132KV DC) was assigned to me and I headed to a
new place. This time I got a chance to exhibit my previous experience and enhancing my
knowledge about the different practices employed while working in the hilly terrains like
prop foundation and the settings through theodolite. The project was big and our team was
small initially. We looked after civil and electrical works simultaneously, since then I have
completed three projects (275KV Manjung Power Plant Ayer Tawar LILO and 132KV Bentog
Raub). My primary job scope was Project Management, Material Reconciliation, Project
Delivery, Cash Flow analysis, Site Quality Plan & Site Execution. Dealing with our clients and
management, following up the project requirements and safety features have contributed to
enhance my managerial skills. I attended the project meetings every week. Though I was not
having any project management certifications that time but I learned by myself and
experienced while working in a live project cycle. I completed ISO 9001:2008 Quality
Management and work safety certifications from Suruhanjaya Tenaga (Energy
Commissioning Authority Malaysia). After I finished the projects I was incorporated in the
Quality Management team and involved in the implementation of quality standards and
control processes of whole organization starting from manufacturing to the site execution
under the direct guidance from Quality Management Representative Mr. Raj Mohd. . Under
his supervision I was able to bring down the annual rejection and discrepancy rate of tower
materials to 0.2% of total production.
While working for almost 3.5 years in HG Power Transmission Sdn Bhd. and having
explored international market especially after being introduced to the vast field of
Construction and surveying I am capable to perform basic tasks like levelling, angle
measurement through transit theodolite crosshairs, staffs and builders level to measure
height and distance. However I feel that, my knowledge to the area is limited and is
essentially require to upgrade and expand my skills on Trigonometrical Survey, Geotechnical
and Surveying Science, Spatial Planning, Land Management, regression analysis and in the
meantime I have a desire to operate all advanced level equipments used in the field of
surveying like Total Stations, 3D Scanners EDM Devices, real-time kinematics etc . So after
giving a lot of thought I have realized that due to my overall experience and interest in the
field of Surveying I believe acquiring a formal Graduate Diploma in Surveying would be
the best step ahead for me both professionally and personally. Considering the kind of

competitive market we are in today I feel that it is really important for us to keep ourselves
updated and to improve our skills and knowledge at each and every level. As I was going
through various Education providers and their programs I came to know about University of
Otago, Dunedin. I was highly impressed with their course module which cover the vast
number of topics and well suited for my actual requirements. I did realize that the program
would help me in developing my skills at Professional level and would give me immense
amount of knowledge by specialized Interactive learning environment and collaboration
among the best faculties and students. I think their teachings would help me immensely.

According to me in the present age of globalization, it is very much important to have a

broad international outlook. New Zealand boasts of an excellent cultural atmosphere and
highly developed commercial sector. New Zealand as a country has made huge developments
in scientific and technological fields. For these reasons I hope to acquire Higher Education in
Surveying Science from New Zealand and learn from professors and gain from their
knowledge and experience. In such a setting I will be constantly exposed to ideas and skills
which will help me develop into much better engineering professional. Studying at
University of Otago, New Zealand will not only help me in acquiring further engineering
knowledge but it will also give me a good international experience as well. I would learn a lot
about the international work culture and it would help me to grow more as a professional. I
believe that a good relationship between the student and his department is of utmost
importance for a successful program. I am certain that application to University of Otago is
the best possible step to accomplish it and I would regard my admission not only as a great
honour but also a great responsibility and an obligation to work hard.

My Extra-Curricular Activities:
All through my school and college life I have played an active role in extra-curricular
activities. I enjoyed taking part in debates, extempore, dances etc. I always was at the
forefront in participating different events in school as well as the colleges. Writing is one of
my hobbies and I take pleasure in reading and keeping myself a best of latest technical
developments in construction industry .I also have a keen interest in photography. I had
