GREATEST WORKS
Centre Pompidou-Metz - France, 2010
This annex for the Pompidou Center in Paris, is to be built in Metz as a complex
including an art museum and theater. By locating a large roof in the park, and by
opening the glass shutter faade around the perimeter, a continuous transition of
the interior and exterior space is created. The roof is made from laminated wood in
a hexagonal woven pattern composed in the form of a Chinese bamboo-woven hat.
This large wooden roof is covered in a Teflon-coated fiberglass membrane and
allows soft natural light to filter into the interior. The main galleries are a series of
90mx15m cantilevering rectilinear tubes that float above the ground, and their
glass window ends point in the direction of the cathedral and other monuments of
the city.
This famous Spanish architect, born in 1852 in the Catalonia region, has come to
epitomise Spanish architecture. A devout Catholic he believed he could glorify
God by taking his architectural inspiration from nature. This appears to have
worked rather successfully - Gaudis various creations are a kaleidoscope of curves,
different textures and bright colours. His buildings can be seen all over Barcelona
but there is one property that seems to define Mr Gaudi, namely the iconic
Cathedral of the Sagrada Familia in Barcelona.
Tom Wright is one of the younger architects appearing on this page but his work on
one of the most iconic buildings of all time, a relatively new one at that, has put him
here with distinction.British-born, Wright is responsible for the design of the worlds
most recognizable hotel, the Burj Al Arab in Dubai, which is recognized as one of the
tallest and most recognizable buildings in the world. Wrights brief was to create an
icon for Dubai, one that people would forever associate with the Gulf Emirate, like
the Eiffel Tower in Paris and the Opera House in Sydney. Wright met his brief with
some aplomb. Built to mimic the sail of a dhow, the building towers above the
impressive Dubai skyline and has become instantly recognizable the world over.
Probably the most recognizable building in the world, the White House was designed
by Irish architect James Hoban. In the late 1770s Hoban submitted a plan for the
design of the presidential mansion. He won the commission and construction began
in 1793. The mansion was completed in 1801. he White House, located at 1600
Pennsylvania Avenue Washington, D.C, is constructed from white-painted Aquia
sandstone and has been home to every US leader since the country's second
president John Adams.
The Torre Agbar, a new tall building from Ateliers Jean Nouvel, in collaboration with
b720 Arquitectura, Garcia-Ventosa Arquitectura, and Leopoldo Rodes Arquitecto,
thrusts into Barcelona's skyline from the Placa de las Glories, a gritty district that
Barcelona's planners have designated "the next big thing," a new center of
commercial activity.
