REPORT AIRCRAFT FINISHES
FABRIC FINISHING PROCESSES
Application Of Dope
a) Rejuvenator :is essentially a mixture of potent solvents and plasticizers.
:is applied when the dope film becomes brittle and cracks but the
fabric is still good, the finish maybe rejuvenated and new
topcoat applied.
b) Spray on the finish coats of dope as heavily as possible without the dope running
or sagging.
c) Spray on a number of very thin coats of the pigmented dope.
d) Wet-sand it with 100grint sand paper between each coat to get a deep gloss finishing
Corrosion Removal And Prevention.
a) When all the finish is removed from the structure, examine it carefully for any
indication of corrosion.

b) Sand away any corrosion and if the corrosion is too advanced, the metal have to be
replaced
Finishing Material
a) After the surface has been properly pre-treated, apply a primer to provide good
bond between the metal and topcoat.
b) Zinc chromate is widely use because of its good corrosion resistance.
c) Since its not provide as good bond to the surface and hazardous material,
two component epoxy primer is recommended.
Wash primer
a) Wash primer is a three-component material for parts of primer are mixed with
2 part thinner and allowed to stand for a few minutes to begin curing.
b) Adjust the viscosity by adding more thinner but never more than eight parts
of thinner to four parts of primer.
c) Apply wash primers with a film thickness of no more than 3 mil
(0.0003 0.0076mm)
d) Applied it within 8 hours or the glaze on the primer will be so hard.

Mixing And Viscosity Measurement Equipment

a) Dip the viscosity cup into the thinned and mixed paint.
b) Time the flow from the cup until the first break appears.
c) Elapsed time is dependent upon the that viscosity of the material
d) By knowing the viscosity that produces a good finish, each succeeding
batch can be mixed the same.

Spray Gun Operation

a) The vent in the lid of the suction cup must be open and the gasket properly fit
sealing the lid to the cup so that material will not spill out.
b) Connect the air line to the gun and pull the trigger to open the air valve.
c) Adjust the regulator to get the desired pressure at the gun while the air is flowing.
d) Pulling the trigger allows air to flow out the center hole of the air cap.
e) When the fluid adjustment valve is open, continue to pull back on the trigger
f) A correctly adjusted spray gun should produce a uniform, fan-shaped spray,
with the fan perpendicular to the wing ports.

Hold the spray gun about one hand span from the surface. This is equal to about six to eight
inches.
Applying The Finish
a) Sprayed, begin from the edges or the corners and move the gun parallel.
b) The stroke begin of the gun and pull the trigger just before reaching the surface
c) Proper lapping will give the finish a uniform film thickness.
d) Arcing the gun rather than moving it parallel to the surface can cause
non-uniform film thickness.

Masking For The Trim

a) Before spraying any finishing, mask off all of the parts not to be painted with
a material that will not allow any finish to bleed through.
b) The best quality masking paper and tape is used.
c) Never use newspaper cause it will not stop the finishes from seeping through
on bleeding under.
d) Pull it back at an angle of about 170 degrees after all the processes is done.

Some of the most common finishing problems :

-runs and sags

-paint or primer peeling

-wrinkling

-overspray

-orange peel

-fisheyes

Safety Precautions
a) Never use a dry broom to sweep overspray from the paint room or hangar floor.
b) Ground the aircraft structure.
c) Do not stir finishing materials with a beater attached to an electric drill motor.
d) If any finishing material gets in the eyes, flush them immediately with plenty of water.
e) In any high place, use a good scaffold.
