KUALA LUMPUR

CONVENTION CENTRE
Group 13
Kuala Lumpur Convection Centre is built in the Kuala Lumpur City Centre (KLCC).
KLCC is located at Jalan Ampang, 50088 Kuala Lumpur, Selangor (3914N 1014248E) and
occupies 40 hectares which includes the KLCC Park and Petronas Twin Tower and the
convention centre.

KLCC Convention Centre is located in a developed town centre. The site is mostly
business centres with no industry areas found around Kuala Lumpur. There are a few
condominiums and offices found around the area. A lot of hotels such as Traders Hotel and
Impiana KLCC Hotel were found near KLCC. Some government buildings are also found at the
site. The main attraction of KLCC convention centre is the aquarium found underneath the
building. Furthermore, there is KLCC Park located in the site which is 50 acres in area with
greeneries, childrens playground and pool which allows the public to enjoy and relax in the
middle of a city. The park has a man-made lake known as Lake Symphony about 10,000 metre
square located just outside of Suria KLCC. Besides that, almost all major embassies are sited
near KLCC convention centre such as Australia, China and Singapore. There are several banks
located near the area too. One Chinese temple is found near KLCC which is called Po Ling
Temple and a shopping centre known as Suria KLCC Mall is located inside KLCC. There is also
an underground railway station that makes it easier for tourist to travel to this area.

There werent any LRT lines before KLCC was built. Before the site was taken over by
the Selangor Turf Club in 1896, the site was exploited for tin. The relocation of the turf club was
to ease traffic congestion along Jalan Ampang and Jalan Parry. Once the site is empty again,
MAI Holdings joined with PETRONAS to develop the 40 hectares land into what became the
KLCC now. The convention centre was completed in the year of 2005.

According to the historical map attached here(figure 4), the site of Kuala Lumpur City
Centre (KLCC) is in the red box in the map. Before KLCC was built at the meet point of Jalan

Ampang and Jalan Parry (now Jalan P. Ramlee), the site was a housing area back then. 127 and
127B indicate the house number of two big houses built there and the other boxes in the site
indicate smaller houses. The two blue lines at the site are drains. There are also private roads
(labeled double black lines in the map) that connect the housing area to Jalan Ampang and Jalan
Parry. Besides the both main roads, the private roads also connect the housing area to the race
course. A fine line beside the house 127B and along the private road is the electric transmission
line. The race course is now the Kuala Lumpur City Centre Park.

For the building industry, the subsurface geology plays an important role. KLCC
Convention Centre, which is underlain by granite or the Kenny Hill formation, show residual soil
weathering profiles suitable to each type of rock. Soil quality is an ideal indicator of
environmental contamination as soil is endlessly exposed to pollution in the open-system nature.
The existing problem in the area is that there is a soft collapsed soil zone above the limestone
bedrock. Because of this, boreholes must go through adequate depths, into the collapsed soil
zone and limestone bedrock for foundation design and construction. The methods that were used
to overcome the problem of collapsed soil are jet grouting and compaction grouting, which has
successfully implemented constructions in the KLCC area, including the Petronas Twin Towers.

Rapid development in the area affects the natural environment, for example water sources
such as Klang River. Though it can be considered as an existing contamination since the
industrial revolution in the mid-1800s, the biogeo-chemical cycle of inorganic contamination
such as metals has been increasing at an alarming rate because of human interventions.
Nowadays, Kuala Lumpur has becoming more developed which in turn causes a huge impact on
the environment and if developed further, future generations will never get the opportunity to
experience the natural environment. Therefore, the public should come together to preserve and
conserve the environment before it is too late.

scale of 1:10,000. The site investigated is KLCC Convention Center which is
indicated by using a red box. According to the map, the longitude of the area is
101E 42 while the latitude is 3N 9. Contours could be seen at the northern part
at 50m in elevation and at the southern part. The accessible roads to the site are
Jalan Pinang, Jalan Kia Peng and Jalan Binjai. The existing property of the
surrounding area are KLCC Symphony Lake, KLCC Park, Exxon Mobile, Belgium
Embassy, HLA Condominium, Menara Pinang Condominium, UOA Building, Holiday
Inn, MNI Twin, The Ascort Apartment and Mandarin Oriental.

The title of the map shown above is Kuala Lumpur Geological Map and has a scale
of 1:63,360. The red box shown above indicates a rough estimation of the site
investigated which is KLCC Convention Center. According to the map, the longitude
of the area is 101E 42 while the latitude is 9. KLCC Convention Center is located
between Kampung Cendana and Taman Freeman which both places act as a
boundary point between two different types of rock unconformities. The lithology of
the site where KLCC Convention Center is located is of quartzite, phyllite and schist
with minor intercalation of limestone (marble) of the Kenny Hill Unit in the Middle
Permian to Carbonferous period in the Paleozoic era. The nearest river located to
the site is Sungai Kelang.
