NIKANOR GRUJI RHETORICIAN, SCIENTIST,

ILLUMINATOR
Summary
Nikanor Gruji, Serbian bishop of Pakrac, was one of the most competent
and well-known clergymen of his time. His rhetorical ability was widely famous.
He participated in many clerical-national assemblies as the leading rhetorician on
behalf of the Church against the adherents of Svetozar Mileti. His ecclesiastical
lectures, given after the liturgies and on important church holidays, are a particularly important part of his biography. Furthermore, throughout these lectures,
we grasp his erudition and significant theological knowledge. Poems by Bishop
Gruji are equally indispensable when analysing the personality of this Serbian
clergyman. Particular attention should be paid to the early-Christian and biblical
motives in his lectures.
