RU Teacher Education Lesson Plan Format

Candidate Name:
Anna Jones
Date:
10/17-10/20/16
Grade Level:
K
Lesson Title/Topic: MATH & ART - Pumpkin Shapes, Pumpkin Voting, & Estimating
seeds
Standards:
Geometry K.11 - The student will
o a) identify, describe, and trace plane geometric figures (circle,
triangle, square, and rectangle); and
o b) compare the size (larger, smaller) and shape of plane geometric
figures (circle, triangle, square, and rectangle).
Probability and Statistics K.14 - The student will display gathered data in
object graphs, picture graphs, and tables, and will answer questions related
to the data.

Visual arts
K.3 - The student will follow a sequence of steps used in creating works
of art.
K.11 - The student will use motor skills (e.g., pinching, pulling,
squeezing, twisting, pounding, rolling, folding, cutting, modeling,
stamping) to create two-dimensional and three-dimensional works of
art.
Specific Observable Objective(s):
I can identify a circle, triangle, square and rectangle.
I can identify which shape is larger.
Essential Vocabulary:
circle, triangle, square and rectangle.
Assessment:
I will assess the students with a pre-assessment checklist by asking them to
identify a circle, triangle, square and rectangle. After the lesson, I will ask
them to identify which shape they are gluing to their pumpkin and use the
checklist for that, as well. I will also assess students as they are voting for
their favorite pumpkin face by asking them, What kind of nose/mouth/eyes
does that pumpkin have?
Student Considerations:
For students with fine motor difficulties I will open their glue sticks or assist
them with gluing if needed.
Instructional Resources, Materials, and Technology:
Glue
Construction paper (black and orange)

Pumpkin & tools for carving.

Large paper for graph
Die-cut pumpkins for students to vote.
2 Die-cut pumpkins with faces on them.

PROCEDURES:
The Beginning (a.k.a. Anticipatory Set): (25 minutes)
I will have a pumpkin cut open (while the students are at lunch). Then, I will
go around to each student and have them pull out a pumpkin seed and
describe it. I will also ask them to be thinking about how many seeds we may
have inside of the pumpkin. I will write down their guesses on a sticky note
and stick it to a chart.
The students will go to art in the middle of this lesson, but before they go I
will talk about how our pumpkin needs a face, and ask them to think of one
for when they come back!
The Middle: (30 minutes)
When they come back, I will ask students to vote which is their favorite
pumpkin face on the circle rug (table-by-table and returning to their seats.) I
will give each student a die-cut pumpkin for us to graph as a class. I will ask
the students, which has the most/least?
I will then have students work on creating their favorite pumpkin face at
their seats. There will be a large construction paper pumpkin with shapes for
them to glue a face with. While they are making a pumpkin face, I will be
carving the winning vote for the pumpkin face.
We will then come together on the carpet and count the pumpkin seeds.
The End (a.k.a. Closing): (20 minutes)
To end the activity, I will show the students the pumpkin and let them each
look at it and talk about the shapes and voting process we used to determine
what shapes.
We will also come up with a total amount of seeds and talk about who got the
closest.
