Goals
The CIHP program is designed to help clinicians acquire clinical
integrative health care knowledge about the nature of illness,
healing, and wellness. Clinicians will learn to incorporate
evidence-based, safe and ethical integrative therapies through
analysis of a comprehensive patient history and physical
examination, and interpretation of basic and advanced clinical
laboratory tests. The goal of the program is to develop
integrative healthcare expertise for the treatment and
management of common acute and chronic health conditions.
Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of the CIHP program, learners will have
developed a comprehensive understanding of integrative health
care and the ability to apply specific treatment protocols for
identified common acute and chronic health conditions.
Module 1 (12 hrs) Introduction to Integrative Medicine (Dr. Wayne Sodano)
Course Description: This module introduces the principals of integrative medicine and how the core
principal of inflammation is related to chronic disease. There will be a breakout session on the physical
examination at the conclusion of the last lesson.
Objectives: Students will be able to explain the philosophy and treatment approach of integrative medicine,
and the physiology and pathophysiology of the inflammatory process and natural medicine antiinflammatory measures and be able to conduct an integrative physical examination.

Module 2 Basic Concepts of Functional and Integrative Medicine (Dr. Chas Gant)
Course Description: This module reviews the new role for clinical laboratory medicine as it relates to
disturbances in metabolism, environmental toxin exposure, and nutritional deficiencies.
Objectives: Students will be able to explain the various methods of laboratory assessment and interpret
reference intervals via the percentile ranking by quintile and the 95% reference interval.

acute inflammation, meta-inflammation, and chronic inflammation, as well as the contributors to
inflammation and associated cellular stress. The role of fatty acids and specific testing to fatty acid nutriture
are reviewed.
Objectives: Students will be able to explain role of balancing essential fatty acids as it relates to arresting the
inflammatory process and the use of anti-inflammatory nutraceuticals.

Course Description: This module discusses the mechanisms of bioenergetics as it relates to energy
production. Clinicians will understand the mechanisms involved in the production of energy via
carbohydrate, amino acid and lipid metabolism and the implication of abnormalities in metabolism. The
mitochondria and its constituents are reviewed in depth from a restorative perspective. A discussion of
mechanisms of oxidative stress and its damaging effect on the body systems are disclosed to the clinician
along with strategies to reduce its damaging effects.

Evaluation of Proficiency
Proficiency testing is in several parts. The first part is administered during the live Physical Exam Workshop
(dates TBA). The second and third parts are required at the completion of each on line module and again
through a final examination, also taken on line. The proficiency test for the live lecture series is composed of
two parts: One (3) hour written examination and one (1) hour practical examination. Requirements for
qualification of CIHP certification is a passing grade of 75% on all proficiency exam(s), submission of one case
presentation for review, and passing ACBN board examination testing. Individual modules must be
completed prior to each proficiency testing.
Part I Written Examination
Part I of the examination consists of:
150 questions derived from module notes and 50 questions based on case presentations that
elicit critical thinking skills as it relates to integrative healthcare. The components include:
patient history; physical examination; clinical laboratory testing; formulating a working
diagnosis and treatment plan. There are ten (10) questions per case presentation. A score of
75% or better is needed to pass this examination.
Part II Practical Physical Examination
The practical part of the examination assesses the clinicians understanding of the
integrative physical examination. Examinees will be required to perform a simulated
physical examination as outlined in the course. The examiner will pose physical
examination questions on procedure and findings. A score of 5 or 4 is needed to pass this
part of the examination. The scoring rubric used for the practical examination
is as follows:

examination as outlined in the CIHP program.
Examinee identifies and describes 50% to 74% of the major components of the physical
examination as outlined in the CIHP program.
Examinee identifies and describes 25% to 49% of the major components of the physical
examination as outlined in the CIHP program.

Remediation:
Students will have a second opportunity to sit for the proficiency examination(s), in the event they do not
pass Part I and/or Part II of the final examination. Only the part of the examination that did not receive a
passing score is required for re-examination. An administrative fee is required for retesting. The date and
location of testing will be determined as needed.
In the event that a passing score is not achieved after a second attempt, a third opportunity will be afforded.
It will be required that specific lessons must be retaken in order to strengthen the proficiency of the learner.
The course instructor(s) will determine the sessions based on the details of the examination, along with a date
and location of retesting.
If a passing grade is not achieved after the third attempt, the learner is required to retake the full CIHP
program.
Recertification:
Recertification is required every two years by submission of one case study along with a renewal fee of $150.
Case presentation requirements will be posted for all students.
