Season Preview
2016-2017 Lock In

After a (19-6) campaign and a region runner up finish, the Cardinals are itching to get
back on the hardwood this season. The Cardinals are poised to make a run at the schools
twelfth region championship. Last year the Cardinals had several seniors lead the way but also
had two young players who were the second and third leading scorers on the team. This year they
return two starters who are now more experienced and ready to lead the Cardinals. Throw in
several key players from a JV team that went (17-1) last season and you have the potential for
another great year. Finishing second last season left a sour taste in the returning players mouths.
The taste proved to be what the Cardinals needed to jumpstart their off-season program. The
Cardinals have been working hard in the weight room with Strength Coach Chad Cooksey. The
summer and fall weightlifting program has definitely added strength and speed to the team. This
summer, the Cardinals attended several camps, which included a 4-day trip to Presbyterian
College where the team competed in several tough games and completed a 20 game summer
schedule together. The time has now come to take it to the hardwood and prove they are a
championship team.
Foster Bridges a (65, Junior) was the teams second leading scorer last season averaging
14.2 ppg. Foster has an incredible work ethic both on and off the court. His focus this summer
was to become more consistent shooting the ball and improve his ball handling skills. With his
drive and competitive nature, he is primed to help this years team win a region championship.
Foster also averaged 5.4 rebounds per game and was named Region I AA all conference as a
freshman and sophomore. This will be Fosters fourth year playing for the varsity team.
Also returning for the Cardinals will be last years third leading scorer and leading assist
man in Trey Smith (511, Sophomore). Smith had a huge summer on the AAU Circuit gaining
the attention of several colleges. Treys main goals this summer was to improve strength and
gain weight. Head Strength coach Chad Cooksey set some high goals for Trey and he reached
every one of them. Smith has put on 23 lbs, grown 2 inches and has gotten a lot stronger. Last
year Smith was the teams leading three point shooter making 60 3FG and also dishing out 120
assist. Smith was name all Region as a freshman and will look to lead this years team to a
region championship.
The remaining returners from last years team includes Jackson Kelley (63 Sr.), Dalton
Lawson (63 Sr.), Skylar Ussery (60 Sr.), Preston Miller (60 Sr.). Jackson is an athletic player
who really rebounds the basketball well. Jackson has one of the best set of hands on the team.
He will look to use his athleticism and ability to finish around the rim to help the team win
games. Dalton Lawson is a hustle man who makes plays by flat out getting after it. Lawsons
scrappy play will see his minutes go up a lot this season as he finishes out his senior year. Skylar
Ussery is a deep ball threat who when he is on can really be a difference maker in a game.
Skylars minutes will go up a lot from last season as he continues to work on his defense.

12
Preston Miller is one of the hardest working kids on the team. He has put in numerous hours in
the gym. Preston has been shooting it well in the pre-season and as long as he continues to
knock down open shots, his minutes will increase dramatically from last season.
Top newcomers include Turner Ussery (511 Fr.), Easton Jenkins (65 Jr.), Manny
Gonzalez (64 Jr.), Christian Gillie (60 Sr.), and Boyce McCool (61 Sr.). Turner Ussery will
have a huge impact on the success of this team. Ussery is a true point guard who has great floor
vision and the ability to find the open man. Turner has a chance to lead the area in assist because
he has several sharp shooting guards around him. Turner has improved his outside shooting this
off-season and has great ability to drive and get to the basket. Although he has no varsity
experience yet, he will be ready for the challenge as he is also the football teams starting
Quarter Back. Jenkins is a big shot blocking player. Easton has the ability to alternate
opponents shots with his size and lengthy arms. Eastons main strength right now is his
rebounding skills. Easton will continue to work hard and improve his offensive game from day
to day. Jenkins will be a huge part of this team reaching its goal of a region championship.
Manny Gonzalez is an athletic small forward who will contribute right away. Manny was the JV
teams leading scorer last year and is looking to earn a starting position on the varsity team right
away. Manny continues to work on his game and we look for great things from him as a rookie
varsity player. Christian Gillie and Boyce McCool are two seniors who did not play last year.
Both players are hardworking kids and will play a major role on this team. Both compete hard in
practice looking to earn minutes throughout the season!
The Cardinals are picked as the pre-season favorites for region 2 AA. With all the hard
work they have put in this off-season, they should have a real good chance of reaching their goal.
Come out and support your Cardinals and as always GET LOUD!
