Exemplars
Management and Change Theory
Introductions to working in healthcare environments
Care Coordination
Objectives
1. Explain the correlation between management and change theory,
introduction to working in healthcare environments, and care
coordination to the concept of Leadership and Management (including
compromised antecedents, deficit measurement in attributes, a list of
negative consequences, and the interrelated concepts which may be
involved).
2. Analyze conditions in which the professional nurse utilizes and/or
experiences leadership and management resulting in management
and change theory, introduction to working in healthcare
environments, and care coordination.
3. Identify conditions and outcomes of effective versus ineffective
Leadership and Management as it relates management and change
theory, introduction to working environments, and care coordination.

Explanation of Leadership & Management Diagram:
Leadership is the process of influencing people to accomplish goals;
management is the process of coordination and integration of resources. The
leader views goals and vision holistically using communication skills and
decision making to motivate others to follow. The manager, in effort to fulfill
institutional goals, effectively manipulates both human and fiscal resources.
The process of leadership and management are influenced by the supply and
demand of resources, needs of the direct patient care units and relationships
with other disciplines. All of these are Antecedents (what must precede a
concept before it exists).
Optimal leadership and management can be assessed through
measurements of the attributes such as employee empowerment, positive
patient outcomes and attainment of established benchmarks. These

LEADERSHIP & MANAGEMENT

attributes can also be affected by interrelated concepts including Health
Policy, Quality Improvement, Health Care Organizations, Teamwork and
Collaboration and others. The positive outcomes of effective Leadership and
Management include employee satisfaction, patient satisfaction and
adequate staff and resources. The negative outcomes of leadership and
management include employee discontent, high numbers of patient incident
reports, and high number of nosocomial infections. Other outcomes both
negative and positive are possible depending on the quality of Leadership
and Management.
