THE VILLAGE LINK

GRIMSTON, POTT ROW, ROYDON & CONGHAM

Hello All
Well here we are again with Christmas nearly upon us. The picture on the front
cover shows a wintry scene at Grimston. It was taken a few years ago, and
although most of us arent keen on snow it does seem fitting for Christmastime.
With very best wishes for Christmas and the New Year.

Christmas Bring it on!

Amandas Home Help

Domestic Cleaning Ironing

Friendly Reliable Trustworthy

Based in Grimston

I don't know if you've seen Tesco's Christmas Advert showing on our TV screens
at the moment featuring Ruth Jones and Ben Miller and Slade's, 'Merry
Christmas' where the 'lady shopper' is daunted by the thought of getting ready for
Christmas and it's only mid November!
Well, as I write this in mid-November, I know just how she feels! So many Carol
Services to plan and prepare for as well as all the special things that happen in our
churches and villages in December all this and more - and 'normal life' doesn't
stop because its Christmas. I admit to feeling a little daunted. I suspect there are
many of you who are thinking of all the shopping and planning and preparing to be
done over the next few weeks who feel the same.
And yet like the character in the advert we too can pause, take a deep breath, look
afresh, see the joy, love and hope in Christmas (not necessarily the mince pies!)
and say to ourselves; Yeah Bring it on!

So let's not be daunted let's turn around together and say 'Bring it on'
And remember that this child we celebrate every Christmas time, born in
controversy, threatened by kings, would forever change the course of human
history. His story is our story. He can transform our lives too.
So will you embrace him as the most wonderful and life changing gift that we can
ever receive? I promise you it will take you until eternity to unwrap His treasures.
I pray that your Christmas this year will be full of Joy and Love and Hope for the
future.
Every blessing
Revd Jane

Established Family Business for over 100 Years

Christmas is such a special time of year, candle lit churches, family fun, children
laughing, there is an abundance of good things coming up for us all to enjoy
including the mince pies.
Christmas is full of love and joy and hope and new beginnings.
It is the beginning of the Christian story when God, because he so loved the world,
sent His son to earth to live among us and show us the right way to be to live.
That, when we take it seriously, is life changing.
It is the beginning of the churches new-year and it heralds the New Year to come.
It is a time when we can all pause for a while from our normal routines and amidst
the tinsel, wrapping paper, turkey and trimmings, reflect upon the potential and
possibilities that lie ahead.

Such a busy term at Holly Meadows!

One of our school development priorities this year is to enrich and broaden the
curriculum so that we fully explore cultural diversity. We celebrated' Black History
Month' throughout October which culminated in wonderful class assemblies
around this theme. Pupils in Key Stage 2 researched key milestones and
significant figures, whilst pupils in Key Stage 1 found out about President Barack
Obama and his time at The White House (very topical indeed). Our youngest
pupils had the chance to share Kenyan texts and music and have looked at
interesting objects from Africa.
During November our focus has been around 'Remembrance'. We have some
wonderful displays around the school to showcase each of the individual poppies
made, a selection of very emotive poetry, imagining life in the trenches, as well as
some factual writing about the events of World War One and the significance of
the 11th of November.
We certainly try hard to get out and about at Holly Meadows! So far this half term,
Barbosa class have visited Gaywood library. This was a great opportunity to
promote reading and a love of books but also to find out the other things a library
can offer. Pupils across the school have had the opportunity to represent the
school in a range of sporting events such as Hockey, Indoor Athletics and a MultiSkills Festival. In December, we are looking forward to some live theatre; Key
Stage 1 are very excited about watching the pantomime 'Jack and the Beanstalk'
in Hunstanton and Key Stage 2 will enjoy a trip to Westacre to see 'A Christmas
Carol'.
We are celebrating Christmas at Holly Meadows with a nativity-based show
'Baubles' performed by our youngest pupils in Key Stage 1 and a traditional carol
service by Key Stage 2, with the support of Reverend Jane at St Botolph's
Church, Grimston. We very much look forward to sharing these with families and
friends of the school in the last week of term to get us all in the mood for the
festive season.
Throughout this term, we have welcomed a number of families to look around in
preparation for new intake in September 2017. A reminder to families with
children due to start primary school next year- if you haven't been in to visit
already, come and look around! Please call our school office on 01485 600241 to
book a visit.
With very best wishes for Christmas and the New Year!

Greenfingers November & AGM

The Annual meeting began with the chairman's review of a year with outstanding
speakers and enjoyable summer outings. Jenny congratulated Cynthia and
Neville Jackson and supporting club members who won the Best in Show trophy
for small gardens at the Sandringham Flower Show. The Annual Horticultural
Show in September helped to raise 1000 for Blood Bikes. We received a letter
of thanks and a certificate of appreciation. We chose to support this charity as
one of our members Ann, had greatly benefitted from their help.
The club re-elected the existing Committee. Jenny Haywood agreed to take on
the responsibility of Chairman for the year. Jean Battson wished to stand down
as Treasurer and was sincerely thanked for her many years of outstanding
guardianship of our finances.
We were privileged to hear Dr Ian Bedford, Head of Entomology at the John Innes
Institute, talk on butterflies, referring to them as one of the greatest wonders of
the natural world. Dr Bedford used his talk to encourage members to find a
corner for nectar bearing plants. With the loss of half the UK's hedgerows since
1947 and also old meadows to intensive agriculture, every effort is needed to help
conserve the numbers of butterflies and moths we have left. The talk and slides
were fascinating.
Plant of the month winners were:
1st Margaret Gladman, 2nd Brian Woollatt, 3rd Eileen Godsall.
The next meeting on December 13 will be the members' Christmas Social
evening.
There will be no meeting in January. The first meeting of 2017 will be on
February 14th, when Julia Stafford-Allen will talk about the National Garden
Scheme.

John Kirkpatrick performs 'Carolling and Crumpets'

Some will remember John for his depiction of 'The Victorian Farmer's Year in
Song'. Now he returns to Grimston to take us on a journey in music and song
through the history of carolling, how it started and how travelling musicians from
medieval times onwards spread the message of Christmas. Afterwards,
refreshments will be crumpets, tea cakes and tea.
The event takes place at St. Botolph's Church, Grimston, PE32 1BG on Thursday,
December 8th starting at 7.30pm.
Tickets on the door 12 or 10 if pre booked via Roger on 01553 630301, or
email haywood301@btinternet.com. Members 10. All welcome. Proceeds are in
aid of Friends of St. Botolph's.

With Christmas now fast approaching and the postman delivering sacks of
Christmas cards I would just like to remind everyone that I am still collecting
stamps to raise funds for the Norfolk Ornithologists' Association. All stamps are
welcome, old and new, British and Foreign, definitive and commemorative. They
need a margin of 1cm or quarter of an inch all the way round but if you don't have
time to cut them from the envelope please just put the whole envelopes in a bag
and I will do the rest, including shredding the address. Some of you know where I
live but if you would like me to collect them from you after Christmas, please just
give me a call on 01485 600937.

Grimston Eye
What a lovely country picture on the cover of last month's link - that of the post office
and Ruby the horse waiting for her mint! (Was it a Murray?!)
It is interesting to see the farm vehicles around the village showing us where we are
on the farming calendar.
I understand from cyclists that our village is a good way to cycle round on their way to
Lynn. I enjoyed seeing families supporting their children's sponsored bike ride.
Two weeks or so ago I noticed that the dog waste bin was overflowing, and filled bags
were left on the ground around the bottom. I understand that the bins are provided
for dog walkers who are not immediately returning home, otherwise the bags should
be placed in their own black bins. The waste bin is cleared fortnightly, which is
sufficient if most does go in the black bins.
It's sad that there is no longer a poppy collection around the village. Our thanks must
go to the lady who has arranged it for many years in the past, and all her helpers.
Where the 'fireman's prayer' was answered on November 5th the animals slept well!
The Remembrance Sunday service at the church was well attended. How good to
see the Beavers and Scouts, with their flag bearers parading up the aisle to present
the flags, and one scout reading the lesson.
The well known hymns were sung with enthusiasm, and the act of remembrance
outside at the Memorial was very moving with the two minutes silence, and the Last
Post and Reveille played by a trumpeter.
Later Congham Church held a delicious afternoon tea to which everyone was invited.
There was also a display of crafts and interesting memorabilia on the theme 'Hear My
Cry. '

elderly. The Trustees are asking that if you wish to be considered for a grant this
year, you should fill in the slip below and return it to our Clerk by the 31st
December 2016. All previous recipients of the money will need to re-apply. If you
wish, you may apply on someone else's behalf, if you think they should receive
the money. All applications received will be considered and treated in the strictest
confidence. The funds will be shared out equally between all successful
applicants and the money delivered towards the end of January.

By the time you read this, the choir will have performed its Christmas concert in
aid of The Big C, Norfolk Cancer Charity and will be making plans for 2017. Our
Spring term starts on Thursday 5th January and we will be learning some new

at Churchill Park School, Winston Churchill Drive, King's Lynn PE30 4RP on

sections, there are no auditions, no need to read music just an enjoyment of
singing. We pay a subscription of 35 per term but if you want to try us out, your
first two sessions are free. We are a friendly group, have a lot of fun and new
members are always welcome. We have a website where you can find further
information :- www.simplysingcommunitychoir.com. If anyone wants to give
us a try but is not sure of walking into a group of strangers, I will be at the front
door of the school building to greet you and accompany you so why not give us a

NO JOB TOO SMALL

Grimston and District WI.

Our summer party in July went really well thanks to the lovely weather. We all
enjoyed a barbeque and salad with some outstanding desserts in the president's
garden. Music was supplied by Keith Davis and there was much dancing on the
lawn. In August David Jacklin came to speak to us about the Birchham Newton
Memorial Museum and we learnt a bit about local RAF history. In September our
speaker came from Davenports Magic Kingdom. He was very entertaining with
lots of magic tricks and jokes. At our annual meeting in October, Sheelah Davis
stood down as president having served for three years, and Mary Roper was
elected. Our November meeting involves Fun Fitness for All and our Christmas
party is on 12th December.
Now is a good time to consider joining the WI. We meet every month on the third
Monday at the village hall in Cliffe-en-Howe Road at 7.30 pm. The membership
fee for next year is 39, just over 3 a meeting - a bargain! We usually have an
interesting speaker, a cup of tea or coffee and a raffle, a competition and an
opportunity to see old friends and make new ones. You can even come as a
visitor for a free trial period. There are several "spin-off" activities too, like a
monthly lunch and a walking group. Our motto is "fun, food and friendship" - so do
come along and join in. A copy of our programme will be posted in Grimston
Stores and Post Office.

This month has been very productive for PTA fundraising. We held our first school
disco of the academic year which raised a fantastic 123.50 towards equipment
and experiences for the children.
We are also very pleased to report that thanks to the support of our pupils, staff,
parents and community supporting our school we have been able to use
fundraising money to purchase a new whiteboard with projector for Explorers
class. We have also been able to fund for Miss Hogger (our reception teacher) to
complete her Forest School training, which will enable our school to have our
forest school status reinstated.
The PTA have also been busy preparing for the Big Prize Bingo on Wednesday
7th December at Ffolkes Arms, Hillington. Doors will open from 6.45pm and eyes
down is at 7.30pm. There are fantastic prizes on offer including hampers, bottles,
days out and vouchers which have been so kindly donated by local businesses
and members of our school and community. If anybody would like to donate any
further prizes they would be very gratefully received please contact the school
office on (01485)600241 or Emma on 07747111452.
Holly Meadows PTA would like to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and a
Happy New Year.

GRIMSTON MEDICAL CENTRE

01485 600341
CONJUNCTIVITIS
This is a condition that usually recovers fully without medical
treatment. Symptoms are red, itchy eyes, often accompanied by
a yellow or green discharge that causes the eyelids to stick
together in the morning. Bathing the eyes is often all that is
needed, though persistent infections may require medical
treatment.
Eye bathing
Use water that has been
previously boiled and allowed to
cool. Soak a new cotton wool ball.
Wipe the eyes gently with this to
remove the discharge and crusting
several times a day. Discard the
cotton wool after each use.
When to see the doctor
If conjunctivitis persists for more than four days
If you have eye pain
If your vision is affected
If you wear contact lenses
If you think that you (or your child) are seriously unwell
Is it contagious?
Conjunctivitis is highly contagious, so keep children with
conjunctivitis away from school or nursery until the condition
is cured.

I must start by saying a huge THANK YOU to everyone that supported me with
the TiddlyPotts Fundraising Pamper & Shopping Evening on the 12th November.
It was a great success! Everyone who came had a relaxing look around the many
stalls, some had a massage or their nails painted while others did a spot of
shopping or had their cards read. The raffle was drawn a 9pm and it took us over
half an hour to get through all the prizes! I'm happy to say we raised lots of money
for the group, over 400 before deduction of costs !! I'm spending some of the
money this month on the children, with a trip to Church Farm Stow Bardolph
where they will get to visit Santa as well as all the farm animals.

The children are enjoying a lovely end to the year at TiddlyPotts. We had Paint
Me Ceramics of Hunstanton visit us to help make some lovely personalised
pottery keepsakes at the end of November and over the last weeks we have been
doing lots of Christmas themed crafts. If you visit the Chapel over the Tree
Festival weekend, please look out for our beautifully decorated TiddlyPotts Tree!!
Our term ends on Friday 9th December with a fun Christmas Party Session in the
morning for the children and a meal at The Three Horseshoes for the adults in the
evening! I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone that has given
their continued support to TiddlyPotts over the past 12 months and especially to
my Mum, Angela Smith, who has given up her free time to help over the last 4
months.
Wishing you all a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.
See you all in 2017. Our doors open again on Friday 6th January.

Norfolk Churches Site

The Norfolk Churches website www.norfolkchurches.co.uk - has been created
by Simon Knott. It's Simon's aim to photograph and write about every church in
Norfolk but until recently our churches were missing from the site. I contacted
Simon and, after a couple of false starts, he visited at the end of July and our
three churches are now on the website.
Simon writes about churches as he sees them and sometimes his reviews are
warts and all. However, it will be of no surprise to us villagers that he was
impressed by all of our churches. Do go onto the site whilst you're surfing the web
and be reminded of the Early English glory of St Botolph's, the pleasing warmth
inside St Andrew's and the work of Victorian architect George Edmund Street in
All Saints. Reading about the church as seen through someone else's eyes will
remind you how fortunate we are to have these three beautiful buildings in our
midst. Please visit and support them as much as you can; we are entrusted with
their care for just a generation.

As Christmas approaches, childhood memories come to the surface. I still

remember the excitement of the visit of the Salvation Army Band to our home.
Dad always arranged the last port of call to be ours, which was way past bed
time. We would lie awake in anticipation of the band striking up in the lobby, after
which Mum would serve mince pies and ginger wine.
But as the years roll by and Christmas comes all too soon for preparation, some
of the excitement can wane. Perhaps we have been overcome by the excess of
celebration, and have lost sight of the simple story of the birth of a very special
child. There is a story told of a Christmas party for the village, and when it was in
full blast, a stranger was standing outside the hall in tears. Someone came out for
some fresh air, and seeing the man, asked Whatever is up with you? It's
Christmas time! I know but the party is for me, and no one has invited me, he
replied.
Perhaps we should make things simpler this year. Look for neat little things to go
in the children's stockings. When they were introduced in Europe, St Nicholas
would include three oranges, to represent three golden balls to pay for the
weddings of three daughters of a poor man along with other fruits and sweets!
Buy just one gift for family and friends on Christmas Day. Have a Christmas
banquet that is sufficient for the holiday, and doesn't end up in the food bin. Prune
the Christmas card list with genuine sincerity and don't be bound by unwarranted
pressure of we really ought to or we always have done. Live with the freedom
of love rather than the tyranny of image. After all the angel Gabriel told Mary to
call her firstborn Jesus, which means among other things liberator. What could be
better than being set free from the tyranny of the endless encouragement to shop
till you drop?
This is not another Scrooge on the beat, but a challenge to generous love rather
than insincere image building. Let love be genuine. Understand love is caring and
not spoiling. Love is knowing the difference between the origins of a tradition and
the folklore of Father Christmas and putting up the mistletoe, strategically placed
of course! Love is reading for ourselves and our children the story of the birth of
Jesus written by one of the historians, Matthew or Luke in the Bible. Christmas is
celebrated all over the world, even in traditional Buddhist countries like Japan, for
it keeps the check outs busy as much as other festivals do. For we live in the
global village now and Buddha's birthday is celebrated far from the land that
adopted the hope of Nirvana. Love is accepting that our supermarkets will keep to
the calendar of our multicultural society so that Christmas will be followed by
Chinese New Year, and then by Eid, Rosh Hashanah, Diwali, and the birthday of
Guru Nanak, all colourful celebrations. But let's not party with the stranger
standing outside.
