Unit 33 Assignment 1 Comparison

BBC Three
BBC Three is always very abstract and is very fast and upbeat. This is good for matching the target
audience, as it is aimed at teenagers so they need to be kept entertained or they will get bored and
change channel. This channel plays lots of comedy shows, such as Family Guy, American Dad, etc.
In February 2003 BBC Three was launched, the first initial thought of this ident was brown blobs and
a blue background, the word Three towering in 3D shapes behind
them. The blobs were never commentary people within the ident,
only characters with no purpose as such. The
brown blobs parallel the CBBC green and
CBeebies yellow blobs used at the time and
showing a progression through age groups. The
logo at this time was a white square with blue text, BBC being quite small and centred
at the top and the Three being bigger and slanted in capitals. In 2005, the box colour
was changed from white to blue with white text.
In 2008 the ident changed to media world. The new logo would
feature on the revamped BBC Three website, mobile site and on
the channel itself. They used this idea to show that they are
advanced enough for more than one media. The logo changed
quite a bit. It became a pipe
containing pink liquid spelling
out three. This ident is filled with surreal world images where
technology is seen in large scale, with plug sockets, phones,
televisions along with other objects such as fire extinguishers,
sunglasses, high heeled shoes, lipstick all linked together by pipes
containing multicoloured liquid.
The most recent ident was produced on October 2013 based
around the theme discovery.
In January 2016, BBC Three got
a new look, before the
television channel moved to
online only on 16th February.
E4
E4 doesnt really relate to the genre of the programme because E4 shows a wide range of programmes
with lots of different genres so its easier to have more idents. The E in the name stands for
entertainment.
The channel was launched in 2001. The logo was a four which was
made up of lots of coloured blocks. In the ident the coloured four
fell over and broke into lots of different pieces, making a smashing
noises. The little blocks then turn into fours and start bouncing

round, a purple one then bumps into the camera showing the E4 other logo.
In 2004, the idea changed completely. They made it into a normal
scene, such as a beach or a living room with a band dressed in
purple playing somewhere. This is when the purple theme
became a definite. After showing the picture the logo would
appear in the right bottom hand corner, it would show an outline
of the four then the inside part with the E shows up.
In 2007 it changed again. It started to become a little abstract
with things floating and inanimate objects walking off, wires
slithering away, drawers leaking purple Claymation fluid, walls
changing colours, animals appear, etc. The scenes are places
such as a garage, a front room, a hotel room and more. These
idents include a lot more purple than the other idents through
the years.
In 2013 it changed to
scenes with animals in
very blocky looks.
In the years of E4 they
have had over 200
idents.
Disney Channel
This channel doesnt really change
much over the years, the stick to a
scene making up the mickey mouse
ears. They make it using different styles
but they all end up the same. The use
minimalistic drawings for the younger
ones but any normal ident they use a
theme from a Disney film or
programme. This style of idents was
started in May 1999, to prepare for the
new millennium, Disney Channel in the
UK received a brand overhaul as the
channel adopted a new circle logo, with three symmetrical circles forming the iconic Mickey Mouse
head shape. Along with the logo change, a new ident set, created by French design company GDON,
was introduced on the same day. The branding was carried over to other Disney Channel international
networks starting on June 1999.
