Observe a health in its entirety. Identify the goal of the lesson, the
procedures and the content being covered. Note the methods of instruction
along with the interaction between teacher/student and student/student.
(Note: This can be a physical education class)

Mrs. Morani began the third grade gym class by having the students sit
in the center circle. Once they were all in the center, she explained what
they would be doing during class. Then, she turned on the music and they
ran a few laps. After that, she told them to sit with their groups. Mrs. Morani
explained that the students would be rotating through stations. There were
six different stations: dips, ladder races, ab rolls, jumping jacks, lunges, and
pull ups. She modeled how the students would complete each station. She

then assigned each group to a station. She turned on the music and they
began the stations. Mrs. Morani turned the music off every two minutes. This
was the students cue to move to the next station.
After the students completed each station, they returned to the center
circle. Mrs. Morani asked them if they recalled when they discussed fitness.
Most of the students said they remembered. Mrs. Morani then asked the
students a few questions to review what they did in the previous class. She
told them that it is important to have all the ingredients for fitness. She
compared this to making chocolate chip cookies. If some of the ingredients
are missing, the cookies will not turn out. Then, they talked about the heart.
This began the main part of the lesson, which addressed Standard 10.1.3.B:
Identify and know the location and function of the major body organs and
systems. Mrs. Morani explained that the heart is a muscle that pumps blood
throughout the body. She informed the students that for an exercise to be
good for the heart, it has to make the heart beat. It must also make you
breathe faster and sweat. She had the students put one hand on their heart.
She explained that their heart was beating slowly because they werent
doing any exercise. When they exercised, however, their heart would start
beating faster. Mrs. Morani told the students they would be doing exercises
that strengthen the heart. She modeled the eight stations, which included
jump rope, climbing wall, basketball shooting, hurdle jumps, yoga, steps,
hula hoop, and Frisbee. She then passed out a worksheet and explained how
they would fill it out after they completed each station. The goal of the
activity was for the students to determine if the exercises were good for the
heart. If the activity made their heart beat faster, they circled the heart. If it
made them breathe faster, they circled the lungs. Finally, if the exercise was
good for their heart, they drew a smiley face. After each student found a
partner, they began the stations.
At the very end of the class, Mrs. Morani congratulated the students for
doing a good job. She also identified the Mystery MVP for the class. The
Mystery MVP is a student who performed very well in class. When a student
is identified as the Mystery MVP, they receive a sticker. After three stickers,
they get a lollipop.

As I observed Mrs. Moranis third grade gym class, I noticed a lot of

positive interactions between the teacher and the students. Mrs. Morani
referred to the students as friends. For example, she said, Please sit in the
center circle, friends. She also walked around as the students were doing
the stations. She gave them encouragement and modeled the exercise if
they were unsure how to complete it. The interactions between the students
were also positive. They helped each other during the stations. If a student
did not know how to complete an exercise, another student explained it to
them. The students also worked together to clean up their stations. At the
end of the first set of stations, the students helped each other move the
equipment out of the way to prepare for the next set of stations.
To conclude, I had a great time observing Mrs. Moranis third grade
gym class. The class was full of energy, and Mrs. Morani really knew how to
interact with the students. She created a welcoming and supportive
environment for everyone. The students enjoyed themselves and learned
about one of the major body organs at the same time. That is the best kind
of learning experience.

Type a one page rationale/reflection about your observation. Include your
