Intro to Game:
My game is a free roam game that is set in a post-apocalyptic wasteland,
you have the whole world to explore in order to find items and complete
missions and quests. The base line of the game comes from a film called
Divergent where people are split up in to different districts depending on
their traits and how they are as a person. When you start the game you
can choice to be a character from one of the districts, as the game is free
roam you can go anywhere and even go to the different districts in order
to find new things and do missions.
Title
I have chosen this title for my game to stay with the theme of the game
as I wanted the game to fit and suit the film and because I have taken the
idea from the film I want to make it as much like the film as I possibly can
so by keeping the name of the film it helps to keep the connection
between the game and the film. The work divergent means different and
as the user plays through the game they will soon come to learn why the
game is called this as they make their way through the storyline of the
game.
Format
My game will be created for game consoles, when the player first players
the game they will be greeted with a home screen that will give them
different options for the game, this will be things like Campaign,
Multiplayer, Store and Options/Settings. Once the user selects one of this
options they will then be taken to this area of the game, for example if the
player pressed on campaign then will then be taken to a page that gives
them another list of options which will be New Game, Continue Game and
settings. Once the player presses on either continue or new game then
the game will start and they will either carry on from where they last
saved the game or they will start the game from the beginning.
MY Genre
The genre of game I have decided to make is an free roam action game,
this will allow players to enjoy freedom in the game whilst completing
quests and missions as well as puzzles in order to progress throughout the
game and go further. As the game is a free roam but there is a storyline to
follow this means that there will also be role play involved in the game
and the puzzles make the play think and play more satirically in order to
progress, this helps to keep the game interesting and unique and it also
helps it a wider range of my target audience as I believe that the style of
this game suits a very wide range of people as it includes so much in the
contents of the game. As the game is build up so many different areas
gives them a vast world to explore that makes the game interesting and

this means that people wont get board of the game as easy as there is so
many things to do and complete.
This idea came from a film I watched called Divergent
and I thought I would create a good concept for a free
roam game, this means it will come under a title of a
franchised game as it is now my idea although some
of my own thoughts and designs will be put in to the
game.

To get some ideas for the game I did some market research in to other
games that are similar to the free roam style of game I am looking to
create, I got the idea for the game from a movie that I watched recently
called Divergent and I thought that it
had a good storyline and concept for a
game and I believe that it would be
very popular with many people as I
have seen how successful these sort
of games do in the market with the
target audience I am looking to reach.
This game will be a mixture of a role
play, action, puzzle, adventure and
most of all free roam, I feel this is an
important feature in my game as
people like to be able to explore in games as they dont like being tied
down and being told what to do, free roam helps to keep the game fun
and interesting as the player never knows what they are going to do or
face next. I have been looking at other games 18+ rated games that are
free roam as this is the style of game I want to create and the target
audience I am aiming for as I believe there is a lot more you can do with a
game that is 18+ as you have less restrictions when designing the content
of the game. A game that I came across was a game called Rage, is it a
free roam 18+ rated game and the style of it is very similar to the game I
am looking to create. The
game was very popular and I
have actually played it
myself and having the game
free roam helped to keep it
interesting and unique each
time as It was hard to predict
what was going to happen
next. The game will be
created and designed for
both genders male and
female with both female and male characters available to the player but I
think that a large part of my target audience for this game will be male as
it quite gory and includes weapons and killing. Games like this have
proved very popular which I think will help me to achieve more sales as I
am reaching a bigger amount of people, the game includes missions for
you to complete and also customisations you can do to your character and
your car to help you beat enemies around the world and to help to
navigate throughout the map more efficiently. The game includes very
dark colours and dull scenery as it is meant to be based in a world that is
post-apocalyptic meaning the design of the map is meant to look derelict
and rundown.

When creating my game, I have to make sure that I choose my target


audience as then I know what sort of content I can create and include in to
my game. I want to create an 18+ rated game as then I
can
make the game more interesting and I dont have any
restrictions when it comes graphics and content, I
am allowed to add weapons and blood which I
would be allowed if it wasnt an 18 rated game. I
also have to focus on my target audience and
their gender, I feel that my game is with have
a more male target audience but some
women will play the game and I will make it
suit able for both genders as I want to have a
wider target audience. I will do this by having both male and female
characters that players can customise and change so they suit the user
and it helps to make each character more unique and interesting and I am
hoping this will draw both male and female players in to the game. When
creating any product for the public you have to make sure that you are
creating a product that appeals to them and that suits them so it grabs
their interest and attention, and the best way to do this is with the content
you produce. I think that because my target audience is 18+ I have a lot
more I can do with game and its content as well as the graphics I can use
in the game as I can make it look more realistic with blood and weapons.
Making sure that you are producing a product that hits your right target
audience is important as they are the people you have to impress as they
can make or break your game and can be the reason for the game being
successful or not, in order to make sure I am creating a good game with
good content I will be doing research in to different games that are similar
to mine as well as conducting questionnaires to get as much information
about this genre of game as I possibly can to give me the best chance of
making a successful game.

Language content
As my game will be rated 18+ the type of language that will be used with
in the games content will be very different to a game that is made for
players under 18. As the game is 18 rated and does will include graphic
and violent content the language that will also be used may be the same,
this could include things like swearing which wouldnt be suitable for
children and players of a younger age. Although I will be less restricted in
turns of the language used I still have to be careful in what is said in the
games as I dont want and content to be deemed offensive to anyone as
this could get me in to a lot of trouble and t would reflect badly on me and
the game and it would put people off buying it and that could lead to the
production of the game stopping. Also I will be adding in subtitles to the
game, the reason for this is some people like to read what is being said
and it helps to make sure that people that may have hearing problems
can still and enjoy the games content and follow the storyline. This option

can be controlled and by the player and they can turn subtitles off or on
with in the games settings.

Different languages
Many games now a days offer the
player to choose a language they
would
like to
play the
game in,
a very popular game company that does this a
lot is EA sports, by doing this that create a wider
target audience as this allows more people to
enjoy the game as they will be able to
understand the contents of the game better. I
will add this feature into my game as I want to
try and make my game as successful as possible and I want to get the
biggest target audience and fan base for the game as I can to try and
make the game as popular as it can be. By targeting other countries, I am
widening my target audience meaning that a lot of work will have to go in
the creating the game as it will have to try and be suitable for everyone
which will take a lot of work and planning but if it does work it means that
a lot more copies of the game can be sold therefore making is a more
popular and well known game around the world. The languages that ii will
include in my game will be English, Spanish, French and German as this
are some of the biggest countries in Europe and I feel that these are the
best countries to target for my target audience.

Territories
The main storyline of my game is that there are 5 different districts in the
game all containing different types of people as they have all be
segregated due to the apocalypse. The player can play through the game
and start to unlock these other areas and territories the more they play
the main missions and progress through the storyline of the game. Until
these areas are unlocked the player will not be allowed there and if they
do they will be told to return to the non-restricted area and if they dont
their character will die and then they will lose all of their items. These
areas will be signified on a mini map and the colour of the area on the
map shows which district the player is heading towards. There will also be
a zone in the middle of the game that is like a wasteland where there will
be enemies that are more powerful than normal. Once the player enters
this zone they will not be able to save the game from within that zone and
any times they have picked up will be lost if they die. This area will be
very hard to battle through but they will be rewarded with better items
and loot for killing enemies with in this area. This will give the player a
reason to enter this zone and be challenged, this will help to keep players

interested in the game and its content. As the players go between


different territories the name of the area will come up
on screen to help show the player where they are in
the game as different territories will be harder to
survive in as the have a different difficulty of enemies.

Overview
My game is a free roam game that is based in a postapocalyptic wasteland, humanity has been separated to try and help the
increase of survival better. As the player works their way through the
game and missions they will learn more about the
storyline of the game and what happened, they will
have to fight for their survival. They will have to
work their way up the ranks to make their
character more powerful as this will help them
complete missions easier and it will allow them to
use more equipment and enjoy the game more.
This is a free roam, adventure and survival game
where the player will be forced to make split
decisions and will put in to different situations that
they will have to work their way out of.

The game I want to create will be an 18+ rated game free roam game
based in a post-apocalyptic world the player will have a whole world to
explore ad challenges to face as the
adventure
around the game. As thy play
through
the game there will be missions
and
quests that the player will be set
which
will all have an objective that they
must do in order to complete that
mission, which will then let them
proceed further in to the game
and its
storyline. Some missions will
have a more difficultly objectives
to
complete as this will usually happen the further the player gets in the
game, this is to help keep the game interesting and challenging for the
play to make sure that the game doesnt become easy and boring.
Throughout the game there will be different types objectives and missions
as there will be main storyline missions, these will be main missions that
will progress through the storyline and there will also be side quests or
missions. These will be found around the map as the player explores and
these will little missions that dont impact the storyline of the game but
they will give players XP and weapons and unlocks as well as keeping the
player entertained whilst free roaming. These side missions will be
identified on the mini map, the icons for these side missions will appear
when the player is a certain distance from them and there will be a
challenge to complete all the side missions, but as the game is a free
roam and the missions only appear when they are close the player will
have explore and venture around the world meaning they have to explore
in order to find them and complete the challenge.

Theme
The theme of my game is a free roam, adventure and survival game, this
will make sure that there is always something to do in the game whilst
challenging the player as they have to fight for their survival as well as to
keep their items and loot they have got from missions. As the game
design is post-apocalyptic that means that there will be many rundown
areas with derelict buildings. The map will have different areas for
example there will be towns and cities as well as deserts that the player
will have to venture across in order to get to another part of the world. In
these different areas they will come across different enemies that they will
have to try and avoid or fight to get past and continue adventuring around
the map. I believe that there are many ideas and designs you can come
up with and use with this theme and it lets me as the creator to be more
creative with the design and style of the game as I can add more effect on
to the buildings and areas as I will have to make them look destroyed, this

will help to create a good feel to the game as well as creating a unique
and interesting world for the player to explore with loads to do to make
sure the game and its content doesnt become boring.

As the structure for my game is a free roam adventure, I want to have


different zones and districts that the player will have to unlock before they
can go to this area of the game. The way in which they unlock the
different areas is through playing the main storyline of the game, they will
then be set missions that will then allow them to visit that area of the
world and once the mission is complete this area will be unlocked so the
player can go visit and adventure through this area, this will lead to them
finding new characters and equipment that they can use to help them in
future missions. Each area they unlock will increase in difficulty, the
reason for this is so the player is always being challenged and so the
game doesnt become too easy and boring as their character becomes
more powerful but for this the play will receive bigger rewards for
surviving in the more difficult areas.

Features
One feature I will be adding in to my game is that when a plyer dies
without saving the game, any loot or items they have picked up whilst
exploring will be dropped and the player will have a certain amount of
time to return to the place where they died before all of their items
respawn which means they are then lost and cannot be retrieved by the
player. This will force the player to be more strategic in the way that they
play as they will be on edgy when they have good items as they wont
want to die and lose them, this adds a new aspect to the game and it will

make players adventure more in order to find a safe zone to store their
items. Another feature I will be adding in to my game is upgrades and
customisable items for the players character, this will be things like items
of clothing to weapons and also skills the character has. When the play
upgrades their character they will be able to upgrade things like the item
space in their characters inventory so
they can hold more loot, they will also
be able to upgrade their characters
skills and traits with in the game, this
means that they could make their
character a better fighter or shooter or
give them ability to pick locks or move
silently throughout the game a
missions. These upgrades and unlocks
will have to be earnt by the player by ranking up their character and
getting them to the right lever required to be able to use the abilities.

In the game I want to try and make the characters more unique to each
player,
this will be
done by
offering
players

customisable items for their


character so this will be things like
cloths, skills and weapons. I will also
be adding male and female
characters in to the game and the player will be able to choose their
character when the first start the campaign mode, this is so there is some
variety in to the game and so the game will hopefully suit more people
and create a wider target audience for my game. The player will also be
able to create their own character sort of like an avatar so that they can
create themselves f that is what they want to do, by giving them this
option it allows players to me more unique and interesting with their
characters and it also will help separate them when playing online
multiplayer with other players all around the world. Certain items for your
character in the game require a certain rank in order for you to wear
them, if you have them unlocked it is a way to show other players the
rank your character is. Them items will also help the player in missions as
some items of clothing will help your character in a different way, this will
be things like more armour or movement speed which will help the player
in different situations.

Mechanics
The way in which the game works is that the player has to work their way
through the games storyline in order to unlock different areas and zones
as well as items they can use for their character, the higher the rank of
the character the more equipment and items they will have access to.
This will also be the same for areas in the game as the map is made up of
different districts which will be unlocked the further the player progresses
in to the storyline of the game. I will use green screen and sensors like
many games today to make sure that the movement for the characters is
as realistic as possible and to make sure that the game feels and looks
good as well as runs smoothly. These sensors are attached to a person
and they have to do some different movements that would be done in the
game by the character, this then helps to recreate these movements and
actions in the game and make them look even more realistic so that the

game play is fluent as this is important in any game but it is even more so
in a free roam as these is so much more for the player to do.

Story
The storyline will sort of be along
the lines of the film as I want
fans of the film to also be fans of
the game, so to do this I will
have to include key and
important events in to the
storyline of the game. This will ensure that the game is like the film as
these events in the film play a crucial part in how the film and the
storyline plays out. I will be adding in characters from the film in to the
game but I will also be adding in some other characters that you will find
around the world and they will ask for your help and set you side
missions/quests that you can complete to gain more XP and items for your
character, this will help the player rank up faster as well as forming allies
to help them in further missions. In the game there will be a main
storyline that the main missions will be based around. As it is a free roam
game you need to make sure you are keeping the player entertained so by
adding in the side missions to find as well as new areas and items it forces
them to go exploring the games world to find new things for their
character and it also gives them something to do when they arent playing
a main mission, as well as them getting new items from completing these
side missions, the player will also find a little more information about
other characters or where items are in the game and some of these
missions will make the player go in to a different area of the world pushing
them in to their comfort zone therefore making the game more interesting
and exciting to play.

Environment
As the game is based in a post-apocalyptic world this offer the player with a very
diverse world and environments to explore. In my game I will have major run
down cities as well as desert wastelands for the player to explore as this gives
them a different in scenery, this will make the game look and feel more
interesting. As there is a lot to explore and do these different environments will
force the player to play a certain way as they will have to navigate through these
different terrains in order to find items and complete missions. These
environments will be hope to different types of enemies, items and missions as
they will have to fight and play in a certain way in order to complete their
mission. Once they have player a mission in this area it will then be unlock for
them to explore in free roam, this then makes the game more interesting as this
then gives the player more environments to explore. I will have destroyed
buildings that will offer advantage points to be seen from and enemies can get to

these spots making the player feel even more on edge as they have to check
every building and play strategically in order to survive and get out alive. As the
player moves through these areas
they will have to dodge objects in
their past and watch out for parts of
buildings that could collapse at any
point, this then makes the game more
interactive as the player can cause
these collapses to happen by hitting a
certain place on the building. The
environment will be run down and
destroyed to make the game feel
more realistic and it will be dark and gloomy as it is meant to be like there has
been an apocalypse around the world, these dark areas will offer cover for the
player and enemies in order to not be seen by other characters meaning you can
sneak around the map without being seen but this will be hard to do as the
environment will force you out of these dark areas as they want you to have to
fight for your survival.

In conclusion I will be making a free roam


game and by looking at all this research I
feel I have a good Idea for a game and that
it would be successful as these games tend
to be very popular with the target audience
I have chosen. I will use some of this
information I have collected in order to
make my game a successful as possible
and to try and create a game that people will love.
