Boy Racers

Boy Racers driving up and down the Small Heath Highway and surrounding streets late
at night causing noise ASB and concern for local residents regarding road safety. Small
Heath team working with Birmingham City Council towards a High Court injunction,
application date in next two weeks, followed by a large regional enforcement operation.

Motor Vehicle crime


Theft of number plates throughout the week and marked increases in theft from motor
vehicles on Birmingham City FC Match days. The crimes affect the local residents as
much as supporters visiting to park near the ground. Small Heath team working with
other specialised teams on a range of overt patrols and to deter offenders and Covert
tactics to catch them. Also working in partnership with a youth group from the Ahmadiya
Mosque at Tilton Road who volunteered their time to deliver crime prevention leaflets to
supporters and residents parking in the area on Match days.

Drug supply
Various complaints from residents directly or via email regarding Drug dealers dealing
openly across various locations, on foot, in cars and from premises. Small Heath team
actively targeting known dealers and carrying out intelligence led stop/search as well as
two search warrants in the last two weeks. We are aiming for one a week over the next
month.

intelligence received will be treated with the utmost discretion and sensitivity.

Alienation and lack of control over their lives may lead to frustration and
aggression, resulting in non-utilitarian crimes.

Crime may be the only way they can obtain the consumer goods they are
encouraged by advertising to buy, resulting in utilitarian crimes such as
theft and drug dealing.

Reiman (2001): that 'street crimes' such as assault and theft are far
more likely to be reported and pursued by the police than much 'white
collar' crime such as fraud or 'insider trading' in the City. Thus, the more
likely a crime is to be committed by higher-class people, the less likely it is
to be treated as a criminal offence.
