Objectives
(SWBAT)

By the end of this class, students will be able to identify solids based on their
characteristic and non-characteristic properties.

Big Idea

The properties of matter are determined by its chemical composition.

Subject Specific
Competencies

Seeks answers or solutions to scientific or technological problems.

Develops a plan of action
Carries out the plan of action
Analyzes his/her results

Progression of
Learning Topics

1. Properties of matter
f. Characteristic properties
i. Defines a characteristic property as a property that aids in the
identification of a substance or group of substances
2. Characteristic physical properties
c. Density
ii. Determines the density of different substances.
iii. identifies liquid and solid substances by their densities using a
reference document.

Materials needed

Solid Identification Lab handout

Solid Identification Table
10 Solid Identification Lab Set Ups
4 unknowns
Graduated cylinder
Balance
Conductivity Meter
Magnet
Water displacement can
Ruler

Context

We finished our notes on the organization of matter last class. Students should
understand the difference between characteristic and non-characteristic
properties. We have also completed the density notes and have practiced
calculating density.

Learning Activity #1: Introduction to Solid Identification Lab

Students will be given the lab handout and the solids identification table. They
will be given a brief explanation of how to use the table and reminded about the
difference between characteristic and non-characteristic properties. They will
then be reminded that the procedure is very important for this lab and told to use
the handout that was given to them last class to help them complete the lab
report.
Students will be told to complete the procedure before they are given their lab
materials.
Students will be reminded of the lab safety rules and told to always wear their
lab goggles during the lab.

9:55 10:51

Learning Activity #2: Solid Identification Lab

Students will complete several tests on the unknown substances and record
their observations in a data table. They will be testing:
Color
Malleability
Electrical conductivity
Magnetism
Density
Metallic lustre
Once they have completed all the tests for the 4 unknowns, they will be asked to
clean up their station and return their materials. Their materials will be checked
to make sure everything was returned properly.
They will then have the rest of the class to finish the analysis section of the lab
handout.
During the lab, I will be circulating to answer any questions and make sure
students are respecting the lab safety rules.
If students finish early, they will be given an organization of matter worksheet to
work on till the end of the period.
Assessment: Solid Identification Lab Handout
The lab handout will be used as an assessment for this class.
Homework: No homework.

Differentiation

References and
resources used

Students will have the opportunity to work in groups and perform hands-on
science.

Target Professional
Competencies
Reflection
