Failure studies of joints in
Composites
The main objective of the thesis is to study experimentally the failure of various types of joints, like
Adhesive bonded, Riveted and Hybrid, made out of composite adherents. The composite laminates were
prepared by autoclave moulding and test specimens were made from it, According to ASTM-D-3165-95
standard for adhesive bonded joints. Specimens for Riveted and hybrid joints are of same dimension as that
of adhesive bonded joints. The test specimens were ultrasonically C-Scanned to identify defects before
testing.
It is experimentally found that adhesive bonded joints have higher load carrying capacity compared to other
types of joints and hybrid joints were more damage tolerant.
