Introduction to the Project
Biological Description of Applicant
This project is beneficial to the community in that it will formulate ideas using
technology on how to solve the rising issues surrounding the U.S./Mexico border. Although the
community surrounding the school is not directly on the border, it is close enough that they feel
the impact of this issue in economic and social aspects. Using the iPads, the students will
represent historians researching the history of immigration in the U.S. to search for a possible
solution. Students will utilize the technology gained from the $10,000 grant, and they will make
a model using technology to recreate a portion of the border, showing how it may be affected by
physical changes to the way our border looks (This can be additions or reductions of border
facilities). Then the students will create a law that they believe based on their research will solve
the issue of illegal immigration and the crime that comes over our border. This is a unique
opportunity for students and teachers to use a hands-on approach for a real life situation. It will
help students think in terms of social, political, and economic strategies for solving real-world
problems.
I am a teacher at Burton Elementary with a degree in Secondary Education through
Arizona State University. Although I am not as familiar with technology as I would like, I am
surrounded by resources that will provide the necessary information on how to use it. I believe
this a once in a life time chance for students to use their mental capabilities to make their
community a better place to live.
