What concepts do you want students to understand after completing this lesson?
I want students to understand WV has 55 counties, each with a county seat and the
relationship of its location. I also want them to be able to identify the states
bordering WV.
Criteria for Success (How will you know students have gained an understanding of the concepts?)
Exit ticket asking: How many counties are in WV? Name three counties and their
county seats.
Resources (What resources will you and your students use?)
Map Printouts - large & blank;
Internet
Smartboard
Technology (What technologies will be used by the teacher and students in the lesson?)
I will use the Smartboard during class discussion of counties and county seat. I plan on showing maps of
the United States and West Virginia to provide visuals. Students will use the following web sites to
complete their activities.
http://gotowv.com
www.magazineusa.com/us/states/show.aspx?state=wv&doc=10
http://maps.google.com
Technology Use (How will students use technology in the lesson? How will students share
technology resources?)
Students will work in pairs and use the websites to lable the bordering states
around WV, WV counties, and county seats.
4Cs integration (How are each of the 4Cs being integrated into the lesson?)
We are communicating via class discussion. The instructions will be communicated
verbally and in written form on display during the activity.
Students will collaborate to complete the lableing activity. They will each have an
iPad so they can easily compare websites to decide what they are going to use.
Creativity will be used with the next lesson when they decide how they are going to
create a legend for the nine tourists regions. Students will use critical thinking and
prior knowledge of government systems to determine the relationship between a
county and its county seat.
Prior Knowledge/Skills (What knowledge and skills will students need before the lesson? How will
you asses their readiness?)
Students will need to have an understanding of the levels of government and the
role of county seats. They will also need to be able to distinguish between the U.S.,
state, and county and have a general knowledge of map skills such as borders,
legends, cardinal direction. We will have a class discussion to introduce the unit
prior to giving the lesson. The discussion will determine if a lesson to refresh skills

needed is needed before starting the unit.

Engage (Capture the students attention, stimulate their thinking and help them access prior
knowledge.)
As a group we will name the levels of government and briefly discuss their roles.
Once we have reached the role of county seats we will look at a map of the county
and county seats. We will complete an I Notice.. I Wonder.... chart as a class to
open discussion on the states that border WV, the counties, and county seats.
Explore (Give students time to think, plan, investigate, and organize collected information.)

Students will compare websites available to aid in completing their map.

Explain (Involve students in an analysis of their explorations. Use reflective activities to clarify
and modify their understanding.)
Students will complete a map of WV bordering states, counties, and county seats.
Elaborate (Give students the opportunity to expand and solidify their understanding of the concept
and/or apply it to a real world situation.)
The county seat is located..... because.....
Evaluate (Evaluate throughout the lesson. Present student with a scoring guide at the beginning. Scoring
tools developed by teachers, sometimes with student involvement, target what students must know and do.
Consistent use of scoring tools can improve learning.)

Exit Ticket will be worth 5 points

Map will be worth 55pts - 1/2pt for each county, 1/2pt for each county seat
