FOLSOM GRIND EXPANDS TO BRING BEER, WINE AND GRUB TO BIKING COMMUNITY
WRITTEN AND PHOTOS BY BILL SULLIVAN
even years ago, Folsom Grind was the brainchild of Folsom residents Erin
and Wilson Gorrell, the proprietors of Folsom Bike on Folsom Auburn
Road. The original concept was simple as cycling and coffee have historically
gone together socially. Now, Folsom Grind has taken their social concept to
the next level, becoming the first bike shop caf to add craft beer and wine to their
venue along with an expanded menu.
When we opened Folsom Grind our concept was to give cyclists and bike shop
patrons a place to hang out before or after their ride, Erin Gorrell said. We wanted to create the community bike shop experience, and be a destination. Even if you
didnt need something at the bike shop, you still had a reason to come hang out with
us.
The association of beer and bikes is nothing. It is very common for cyclists to trek
to a favorite watering hole on an afternoon ride or gather for a cold brew once they
pack up and head home. Many riding events across the country are often sponsored

by breweries and bannered under the theme of Bikes and Brew to entice riders partake after
they participate.
Beer and cycling completely go hand in hand, Gorrell adds. Cyclists like to do a hard
workout and then reward themselves with a cold brew and talk about their ride with their
friends.
As Gorrell puts it, the concept is the cyclists way of breaking bread together. She explained
how cycling is very much social, as it is a healthy activity, especially in communities like Folsom.
Cycling is very social, its a community of its own, said Gorrell, who has watched Folsom Grind become the hotspot for cyclists to start their day for the last seven years. Our
decision to was to give our community a place to be social. This is Folsom, we are a social
community and a cycling community.
From a business standpoint, adding beer and wine to the menu at Folsom
Grind was a costly venture for the Gorrells in the way of obtaining the
proper permits and licensing. Additionally, upgrades to the patio area

Enyeart then helped his brother-in-law open a

could make a career out of it.
Hop House is located in Town Center of El Dorado Hills.
I really liked how the setting is and how it is right
at the base of the Foothills, he said. It is a beautiful
area.
Enyeart came up with the name Hop House after
taking a trip to Salt Lake City, Utah, and found himself in a little neighborhood called Sugar House.
I found this pizza place and inside there was a sign
lit up, like we do, that said Sugar House across the
wall. I thought it looked really cool and I wanted to
have a restaurant name with the word house in it,
Enyeart said. I knew the restaurant was going to be

TAHOE SKIING
KICKSTART WINTER
Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows is looking to once again host Tahoes longest
season after 41 feet of cumulative snowfall in the 2015-16 season. The resort
is poised to open earlier, if conditions allow. Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows has
invested over $1 million in snowmaking enhancements for 2016-17, adding
to a total of $9 million over six years. All teams at the resort have been working
around the clock to prepare for the 2016-17 season, and the Squaw Valley
Alpine Meadows snowmaking system is being deployed at every opportunity.
We are eager to kick off the season and look forward to opening the resort
as early as weather and conditions permit, said Andy Wirth, president and
CEO of Squaw Valley Ski Holdings. Setting an early opening date assured that
we are fully prepared for the 2016-17 season, and we have already seen some
impressive snowfall totals. Our staff has done an incredible job gearing up for
the season and, with help from Mother Nature, we look forward to opening the
lifts on Nov.r 23 or as early as possible, as conditions allow.
With 317 snowmaking guns and a fully automated system at Squaw Valley,
the resort can produce nine times as much as snow as it could 10 years ago. At
Alpine Meadows, improvements to snowmaking infrastructure on Kangaroo
Run will benefit guests and ski racers who frequently utilize the run for training.
At Squaw Valley, investments include three new SMI fan guns, 12 HKD low
energy guns, replacement of air and water pipelines, and upgrades to 102 automatic snowmaking hydrants, allowing the system to go online at high speeds.
These enhancements reduce the communication time from the hydrant to the
snowmaking pump house from minutes to seconds.

Sierra-at-Tahoe
For generations, Northern California skiers and snowboarders have found a winter home at Sierra-at-Tahoe, a
2,000 acre day resort just outside of South Lake Tahoe.
For expert skiers and riders, so much snowfall each
winter means there are acres and acres of perfectly spaced
old-growth Red Fir trees to explore. With innumerable
steep lines through Jacks Bowl and mandatory rock drops
in Avalanche Bowl, off-piste skiers and riders find Sierra a
powder paradise. Huckleberry Canyon, which incorporated
inside the resorts boundary line just a few seasons ago,
is a buffet of cornice drops, rock chutes, gladed runs, and
snow pillows just begging to be slashed.
Trees arent your thing? Sierra-at-Tahoe puts its heart
and soul into grooming each night
Sierra-at-Tahoe is home to some of the nations most
cutting edge terrain parks and is consistently named by
TransWorld SNOWboarding as a Top 10 Overall Resort and
Top 10 Park resort.

RECIPES
These cold winter days bite and chill to the bone like nothing we have experienced for the past
year. Fighting for the covers has been foreign to me for months and I will eat or drink anything as
long as it makes me feel warm. There are a couple cocktail recipes that I wanted to share. One will
warm you to your toes and the other is perfect for cozying up next to a warm fire. With the spicy
notes of cinnamon and ginger, you wont be missing the summer weather at all. Here is to warm
attire and a couple cocktails.
Instructions:
In a saucepan on the stove add water, sugar, ginger, cinnamon, and vanilla until the mixture
begins to boil.

stored ever so lovingly into the back corner of your baking pantry.
The little gingerbread men cut out always gets me excited for the

and chewy and lets face it, just a ton of fun to eat for all ages.

that dangles at the west end of the street in the town that was once
known as Hangtown.
The Bell Tower is by far one of the Citys most beloved landmarks and stands today as a monument in tribute to the citys volunteer firemen. The Bell was originally placed in the tower in 1865
and was used as an alarm system for volunteer firefighters.
The many stores that surround this unique monument also have
a great history behind them and are a must visit on your trip. The
closest store to the Bell Tower is the Placerville News Company.
Family owned through three generations since 1912, this store, often known as The Newsstand to local is a great place to purchase
gifts of many varieties, from games, toys and coloring books, to
figurines and home dcor and dont count out the many periodicals,
maps and publications you can find here.
Another century old store is Placerville Hardware. This family
owned hardware store offers everything you can imagine in the way
of home repair needs and tools as well as a large section of household gifts and home decor. Today, this store continues to utilize the
original rolling ladder system to access their stock that is stacked
from floor to ceiling. No matter how unique of a special fastener or
tool you are looking for, they likely have it or can find it for you.
Combellacks is another one of the many businesses that continue
to operation well past the century mark. Established in 1898 by
William Hill Combellack, this specialty clothing store continues
to be operated by the family and offers a great share of quality

clothing with brands such as Pendelton, Len and Tommy Bahama. It is also one of the areas most popular
locations for mens suits and tuxedo rentals.
Randolphs Jewelers on Main Street is bannered as
the oldest jewelry store west of the Mississippi. Four
different families have owned the store in its 160 year
history. During its term it has survived the Civil War,
the Great Depression and it even burned to ground to
rise again three different times. Randolphs is one of
many great jewelry stores that can be found on your
main street stroll.
Main Street has far too many unique businesses to detail each and everyone. Whether their age is in triple or
single digits, all of them are worth a visit. The street is
very popular for those who enjoy shopping for vintage
merchandise and antiques. There is also a fair share of
shopping options for those with a sweet tooth and those
who love original art and handmade crafts. Dining
also offers abundant options, with nearly 30 eateries to
choose from with offerings from a cup of joe to a four
course dinner and everything in between.
During the holidays, Main Street in Placerville welcomes visitors with many added events and promotions.
Stagecoach rides are available during select weekends
in December. Additionally, they welcome area tree
farm travelers to stop and shop after purchasing their
Christmas Tree from a local El Dorado County grower
and bringing their receipt to select shops to receive a
special offer or discount. Late night shopping is also

with visits with Santa, the Festival of Lights and much
more.

SPECIAL TO ENTERTAINER
Gnomes have been popping up all over Placerville and South Lake Tahoe since
July 4, 2014. This scavenger hunt not only engages the community, but also supports local businesses. Locations of where the gnomes are hidden are tagged and
more clues can be found on Instagram and Facebook in real time. Those who find a
gnome are encouraged to keep it for themselves and take them on their own gnome
adventure, or re-hide the gnomes for someone else to find.
Each gnome is handmade by clay and created by local artist Caitlin Thompson.
Caitlin started the PVGnomey Scavenger Hunt as a way to engage the community in
a fun activity.
It started as just a fun thing to do over the summer. I made a few and hid them
in downtown Placerville not really expecting to get any interest. Within a couple of
hours, all had been found, and I was getting messages asking when I was going
to hide more! From there it became a multi-town game, and I have started adding
seasonal figurines as interest grows, Thompson said.
Just before Halloween, Thompson was out hiding tiny clay sugar skulls around the
businesses.
Alisyn Gularte who currently lives and works in Placerville enjoys looking for
gnomes on Main Street.
The gnomes are beautifully crafted and what fun it is to see clues posted on
Instagram to then go run out and seek little gnomes. I currently have a dozen in my
collection and while I keep saying that I will re-hide them for someone else to find, I
cant seem to part with them, Gularte said.
I love how the gnomes bring out the children in us. Who doesnt love the thrill
of the hunt when the prize is a handmade mini sculpture, created to tickle your
spirits? said Sherry Tollefsrud owner of Mattywags Boutique on Main Street in
Placerville.
To find a gnome, follow PV Gnomey on Instagram and Facebook. use #PVgnomey

dor County that owns a sorting table, which greatly helps the wine making process as the table ensures only the
best whole grapes are used for the wines.
On the property, a 5,000-square-foot cellar sits a short distance from the tasting room. This separates the customer experience from the wine production area. In additional to the beautiful picnic grounds, for those who do not
want to pack in a lunch there is an authentic Mexican caf on site, where visitors can enjoy dishes such has homemade quesadillas or burritos.
What kind of wines can visitors expect to taste in the tasting room? The tasting room is open Monday through
Thursday, from 11 a.m. 5 p.m. and offers a wide selection of varietals and flights. BorjnWinery offers Sangiovese, Zinfandel, Primotivo and Barbara Reposados to start. For the wine taster looking for something a little
different, try the Bull Rider Cabernet Sauvignon, which is available in a magnum size, which is great for upcoming
holiday celebrations.
For patrons who like Zinfandel, we also recommend the Xinfandel Reserva the flagship wine of BorjnWinery
as the X represents their traditional family letter, representing both the dedication to family and to the wine.
Many local retailers also carry Borjn, this attributes to the winerys success, and conveniently, customers can
purchase the wine at six retailers in Amador County. For those who do not live in the area, Borjnwines can also
be purchased from retailers in Sacramento, Contra Costa, El Dorado and even Los Angeles counties.
The next upcoming annual event (and there are a bunch throughout the year) is the Vino Nuevo event (the last
Saturday in January), featuring musical guests, delicious Mexican food, wine sales and new releases.

WINE COLUMN
WINE ALTERNATIVE: Eggnog spiked with bourbon, rum or brandy is a holiday favorite.
First of all, Id like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a safe and prosperous
New Year.
What are the traditional drinks in celebrating the festive season beyond wine and
cocktails?
Egg nog, a traditional drink of Canada and the United States, made from eggs, milk
sugar and either bourbon, rum or brandy.
Then there is the old classic favorite of hot buttered rum. It turns out that butter is
now good for, far better than the butter substitute products out there in the market.
Whereas in Europe the traditional drink is a gluhwein or mulled wine. There many
different variations depending which country you are in, but the main components are
red wine spiced with cinnamon, cardamom, ginger and oranges served hot.
In England, a tradition dating back to the 14th century is to serve an ale based hot
mulled cider called wassail.
Surprise your guests with something different as a starter, recipes for all these traditional drinks can easily found on the Internet.
Traditionally warm drinks are great for Christmas but as we move to the southern
hemisphere, where Christmas is celebrated in the middle of summer. The tendency is
to serve cool refreshing cocktails and fruit punches. The variations are endless with the
basis for the punches ranging from Champagne to fruit juices laced with any spirit of
your choice.

REAL ESTATE
Is there a home
under your tree
this year?
BY PAT QUAN
Making a list, checking it twice. Large kitchen, great for entertaining. Check. Double oven, stainless steel, of course. Check. Counter
space to lay out all of the wonderful food and drinks. Check. A downstairs bedroom to pile all of the coats until everyone leaves after a
night of joy and cheer. Check. Storage for all of those decorations.
Check. Clear plumbing, no leaks. Check (thankfully we got that home
inspection and our Realtor negotiated the repairs on the walkway
and leaky toilet seal). A covered patio for everyone to drink brandy,
hot chocolate or an espresso while enjoying the view and wondering
how 2016 could have slipped by so quickly. Check. Oh yes, dont
forget the new return address labels. Check.
Folsom is a great place to live and visit. Have this years party at
your house. Theres always something to do in Folsom during the
holiday time. The annual tree lighting ceremony is very festive.
Come by the skating rink on Dec. 2 and join in. Do your Christmas
shopping all around town, from the Palladio to Old Town. For a truly
unique Folsom holiday event, do the Historic Folsom Holiday Home
Tour on Dec. 9-10 that showcases nine historic sites beautifully
decorated for the holiday. Or just catch the latest family movie at one
of the awesome theaters in the area while dinner cooks (a tradition
in my family).
The local real estate market feels like Christmas all year round.
As we near the end of 2016, it looks like a strong finish. To put it in
perspective, in 2009, in Folsom, there were 700 home sales with a
median price of $371,500. In 2011, there were 885 home sales with
a median price of $315,000. And year-to-date (through Oct. 31) for
2016, 933 homes have sold in Folsom at a median sales price of
$465,000. Homes are selling faster at an average of 32 days for sold
homes while homes sell for a higher percentage rate at 99.4 percent
of list price.
So as my family and I enjoy this holiday season, if you see us in the
area, be sure to stop and say hi. you might find us at our favorites.
My wife Lynne really likes Viscontis. My younger daughter is partial
to Aloha Sushi and shopping with her friends at Palladio. My oldest
daughter loves Dimple (she works there). And me? Ill eat everywhere and love them all. Habit. Sacramento Pizza Co. Land ocean. La
Fiesta. Bacchus House. In-N-Out. A great Christmas gift for me? Gift
cards to Folsom restaurants!
The holidays are almost as festive as being a Realtor in Folsom.
Helping people solve their real estate needs to fit their changing
lifestyle is a wonderful feeling. Buyers have their wish list. They tell
Santa they would like a fairly new home, near the bike paths, great
schools, with a view. Oh, and move-in ready and within the budget.
Sellers tell Santa that they want an all-cash offer, at asking price,
close 10 days after their holiday party, and as-is. Ho! Ho! Ho!
I just put on my Santas helper suit and talk with sellers and buyers
about these topics and more all the time. With proper planning and
a good Realtor (luckily, I know a really good one), you can smoothly
get to your next stage in life.

5,448-SQUARE-FOOT SERRANO COUNTRY CLUB HOME
BY ART GARCIA | PHOTOS ARE SPECIAL TO THE ENTERTAINER
Theres essentially nothing missing from this magnificent approximately 5,448-squarefoot, five bedroom and four and a half bath estate on nearly half an acre in the prestigious Serrano Country Club in El Dorado Hills, except perhaps strolling violinists.
The home is designed for gracious entertaining indoors and outside. Entering through
the grand foyer with custom-designed barrel ceiling and gently curved archways, the
home office is complemented with gleaming hardwood floors, floor-to-ceiling windows,
plantation shutters and built-in cabinetry.
The formal dining room is bright and open with elegant tray ceiling and extensive crown molding, while the wine cellar provides plenty of storage for your favorite
varietals, said Mary Lagomarsino, sales agent for Pat Seide Group at Coldwell Banker
Residential Brokerage in El Dorado Hills.
A 24-foot ceiling draws in a flood of natural light, illuminating the elegance of the
great room that features a massive stone fireplace and views of towering oaks, she said.

SUTTER STREET THEATRE CELEBRATES 10 YEARS
utter Street Theatre celebrated 10 years with an evening of reenacting songs and past performances as well as announcing their 11th season on Nov. 3.
The event included food from various Folsom restaurants such as Strings, BJs Restaurant and Brewhouse and
Petes Restaurant and Brewhouse. After dessert, there were comedy bits and songs from the past 10 years of shows.
The theater was originally opened in 2006 by Connie Mockenhaupt and Mike Jimena. Before they started the theater,
they worked with El Dorado Musical Theatre assisting in directing and technical directing, Jimena said.
The chamber came to us and asked if we were interested in opening a theater in Folsom, he said. So I told them to find
us a place and they did.
At the time, the couple was concerned about how it would take off and they had a lot of inventory of Star Wars, Disney
and pop culture, he said.
