he Nutcracker has been a festive holiday favorite

for more than 100 years around the world. This
year, Pamela Hayes Classical Ballet Company
will perform their 16th annual performance of
The Nutcracker to keep it alive.
The ballet will return to the Harris Center with
six shows from Dec. 15 through Dec. 18.
For a second year, Pamela Hayes Classical Ballet
will partner with Maestro Peter Jaffe and The Folsom Symphony to bring another sell-out Nutcracker production.
The Nutcracker tells the story of Drosselmeyer,
a mysterious magician and maker of mechanical
toys, who longs to break a curse that has turned his
nephew into a nutcracker doll. With the help of
a young girl, Clara, they embark on a magical ad8 | FOLSOM LAKE ENTERTAINER

his army and traveling to the far away
Kingdom of the Sweets and Land of
the Snow.
Our goal is to offer an exceptional
production capturing the beauty of
the ballet, said Pamela Hayes, artistic
director. If you already share a love of
the arts or have never yet seen a ballet
production, I invite you to come see
one of our productions and experience
local quality ballet. You wont be disappointed and will be enriched by the
experience.
The annual production includes the
companys entire roster along with
more than 50 dancers and children.
The holiday production will also
include a mechanical Christmas
tree that grows from 10 to 30 feet,
an onstage snowstorm, hundreds of
elaborate costumes, including Mother
Gingers that measures nine feet wide
and weighs more than 75 pounds.
In addition, we are having guest
artists from The Memphis Ballet,
Hayes said. Crystal Brothers will
play the Sugar Plum Fairy and Rafael
Ferreras will play the cavalier, which
are both major roles in the show.
Hayes said guests can look forward
to a thoroughly enjoyable performance
from beginning to end. She has had
guests tell her that they never expected
to have so much fun, she said.
It is a very fun form of live entertainment, she said. I have a love of
horses, and for the first production, I
gave tickets to 10 of my horse friends.
They told me they had an absolute
great time and they came back the
next year.
Hayes said there is something about
live performances compared to the
movies.
We are so into movies and we think
they are the only thing to enjoy, but
we need to get more people to go to
the theater because there is nothing
like it.
Hayes encourages everyone to come
out and enjoy a wonderful holiday season tradition with the Pamela Hayes
Classical Ballet Company.

or many people the holidays are about food or decorations, or

for beating the crushing crowds of shoppers on Black Friday for
that perfect gift.
For me, its always been the music. The Thanksgiving holiday
marks the day when a whole batch of holiday albums find their
way back to the top of my playlist. Not just because of the season,
but because it just seems weird to be driving down Auburn Folsom
Road on a hot 100 degree day in July blasting Winter Wonderland. So the specialness of this music remains because I only allow
myself the five- or six-week window to listen to them. What could
be better? Seeing and hearing this music live, of course. Fortunately, here in the foothills we have our beloved Harris Center that has
packed the calendar with so many musical holiday acts it will make
your head spin.
So I caught up with the Harris Centers Executive Director Dave
Pier to discuss a handful of the upcoming shows and help our
readers choose which of the many shows to consider.
Beginning the season with An Irish Christmas and the popular
family show, The Elves and the Shoemaker in late November and
early December, the list of shows just keeps growing.
We do bring in touring artists like An Irish Christmas, Pier
said, and one of the highlights this year is Handels Messiah
program from New York City, but a lot of this is generated by our
local communities. December is actually our busiest month in the
center in terms of the total amount of activity here. We really have
a lot of community groups using the facility the choral groups
at least five different groups performing during the month and,
of course, the Folsom Symphony has their annual holiday program.

11/25/16 1:06 PM

Among the local groups performing are the Sacramento

Baroque Soloists, a music ensemble dedicated to creating
vibrant, engaging performances of music from the 17th to
19th centuries played on traditional instruments creating a
very authentic sound; The Folsom Lake Symphonys Holiday Cheer, performing a series of holiday classics ranging
from Messiah to The Nutcracker to sing-along carols;
The Placer Pop Chorale, an 80-member choral group with
a professional orchestra, who will be performing the seasons finest holiday music; The Folsom Lake College Youth
Chamber Orchestra, now in its fourth year, inspiring music
appreciation and excellence among young people ages 1218; Folsom Lake College Music Departments Combined
Choral Ensemble; The Sacramento Master Singers, one of
Sacramentos most accomplished choral chamber groups will
performAngels We Have Heard On High, carols and holiday tunes representing both traditional and newly arranged
and for those who love their holiday music fast paced and
high energy the El Dorado Musical Theatre ensemble,
High Voltage, will perform holiday numbers and classic and
current Broadway musical numbers.
Of course for many, its not Christmas without the classic
ballet, The Nutcracker. What makes this presentation even
better, as pointed out by Pier, is that with this performance
will be staged by Pamela Hayes and backed up by Folsom
Lake Symphony. Pamela Hayes owns and operates both a
dance studio in El Dorado Hills and a dance company, the
Pamela Hayes Classic Ballet Theatre. The Folsom Lake Symphony will be led by Maestro Peter Jaffe. This classic holiday
treat will feature stunning costumes and comedic choreography. Theres a reason this production has become such a
staple of the holidays. If youre a ballet fan, this will definitely
need to be a performance to see and hear live.
Plus, the Harris Center will be teaming up with UC
Berkeley for one of only two Northern California performances, Folsom and San Francisco, is Handels Messiah
performed by the New York Citys Choir of Trinity Wall
Street and Trinity Baroque Orchestra.

Its interesting story, Pier said, The very first Handels

Messiah, was written in Europe but the first time it was
performed in the United States in America it was
performed in a tavern in New York City (in 1770). And then
the next time it was performed was right up the street in the
Trinity Wall Street Church and theyve been performing it
every year since. Its become, in New York, a big tradition.
People to go see and hear the Handels Messiah and this is
performed with an orchestra and the choir. You can hear it at
the community Wall Street Church. They also perform really
large venues like the Lincoln Center.
This is really a once in a life chance to see them outside of
New York City. If youre a fan of Handel, this is a must-see,
once-in-a-lifetime opportunity outside of Manhattan.
Windham Hill and new age fans are in for special treat
this holiday as well. Marking the 30th anniversary of
their wildly popular album, Winter Solstice, founding
member and Grammy winner, Will Ackerman will be
performing tracks from the album of acoustic music with
Grammy-nominated singer and pianist, Barbara Higbie
and guitarist, Alex de Grassi as they come together for this
joyous holiday concert.
Finally, ending this unbelievable season of over 30 shows is
a traditional Mexican holiday show entitled, Posada Navidena. This production is put on by the Sacramento Mexican Folk Dance Company, Ballet Folklorico de Sacramento
is a journey through different regions of Mexico, featuring
a traditional Mexican Christmas processional (Posada),
Mexican holiday songs (villancicos), a festive piata scene,
a visit from the three wise men and gorgeous choreography
highlighting traditional Mexican dance with 25 dancers and
musicians, including mariachi.
With so many choices the bigger question will not be,
What will I see? but, How will I choose? But whatever
show you do ultimately choose to see, the Harris Center
management has asked for patrons to bring an unopened toy
or canned food for the Harris Center Toy and Food Drive
for several local area charities. happy holidays!

Add more social to your cycle

CHEERS: Cyclists enjoy beer and wine at Folsom Grind.

FOLSOM GRIND EXPANDS TO BRING BEER, WINE AND GRUB TO BIKING COMMUNITY
WRITTEN AND PHOTOS BY BILL SULLIVAN

even years ago, Folsom Grind was the brainchild of Folsom residents Erin
and Wilson Gorrell, the proprietors of Folsom Bike on Folsom Auburn
Road. The original concept was simple as cycling and coffee have historically
gone together socially. Now, Folsom Grind has taken their social concept to
the next level, becoming the first bike shop caf to add craft beer and wine to their
venue along with an expanded menu.
When we opened Folsom Grind our concept was to give cyclists and bike shop
patrons a place to hang out before or after their ride, Erin Gorrell said. We wanted to create the community bike shop experience, and be a destination. Even if you
didnt need something at the bike shop, you still had a reason to come hang out with
us.
The association of beer and bikes is nothing. It is very common for cyclists to trek
to a favorite watering hole on an afternoon ride or gather for a cold brew once they
pack up and head home. Many riding events across the country are often sponsored

by breweries and bannered under the theme of Bikes and Brew to entice riders partake after
they participate.
Beer and cycling completely go hand in hand, Gorrell adds. Cyclists like to do a hard
workout and then reward themselves with a cold brew and talk about their ride with their
friends.
As Gorrell puts it, the concept is the cyclists way of breaking bread together. She explained
how cycling is very much social, as it is a healthy activity, especially in communities like Folsom.
Cycling is very social, its a community of its own, said Gorrell, who has watched Folsom Grind become the hotspot for cyclists to start their day for the last seven years. Our
decision to was to give our community a place to be social. This is Folsom, we are a social
community and a cycling community.
From a business standpoint, adding beer and wine to the menu at Folsom
Grind was a costly venture for the Gorrells in the way of obtaining the
proper permits and licensing. Additionally, upgrades to the patio area

It was pretty costly for us, we had been mulling it around for

only does it create that social destination but it does help us keep

TASTE BUD FRIENDLY: A popular stop for cyclists before and after a ride.

Auburn and Mraz Brewery from El Dorado

Hills. They are currently pouring local wines
from Bogle.
For those that are hungry after a ride, the
menu has expanded from pastries to include
handmade piadinas and flatbread pizza. The
new eats are recipes from local Chef Fred
Haines who co-owns seven area restaurants
with his brother Matt, among them, Bistro
33 in nearby El Dorado Hills. Pastries are
furnished by Willow Caf and Bella Bru.
We are all local businesses networking
together, supporting one another and creating
unity within a community, Gorrell said.
Theres nothing more rewarding after a
long ride than coming back with your homies
to hang out over a cold glass of beer and talk
trash about how you dished out the pain
to your buddies, mused cyclist Ted Toribo.
With the food readily available now, one
can start the recovery process to put back the
essential nutrition so we can do it all again the
next day. Its a perfect fit.
On a fall midweek afternoon, the patio at
Folsom Grind had a number of patrons holding conversations like Toribos with one another. From large groups socializing over a brew
and a bread to a mother and her son enjoying a
relaxing lunch together. According to Gorrell,
this has been common since the expansion and
the response has been overwhelmingly well
received.
Coffee is the perfect pre-ride cycling
tradition and beer is my favorite recovery
drink, cyclist Kevin Keady said. The outdoor
seating provides a great atmosphere with your
riding buddies. As an added bonus, the shop
dog Abbey, loves to hang out on the patio and
provides constant entertainment.
Currently, Folsom Grind is open from 6 a.m.
until 6 p.m. daily, except Sundays when they
close at 5.p.m. When spring arrives they plan
to extend their hours to 9 p.m. and plan to
host special tastings, food truck events and live
music on the patio.
Were looking to have some fun events here.
Not only for cyclists, but for the community, Gorrell added. This is a great location to
meet with friends after work or on a weekend
whether you cycle or not.

Drink a craft beer and enjoy excellent food at Hop
House in El Dorado Hills.
Owner Jason Enyeart spent his entire life in the
restaurant industry before deciding to open his own
business in August 2014.
I tried to get out of it and get a real job, like we all
do in the restaurant industry, he said. I did really
well in sales, but I didnt like it.
Enyeart then helped his brother-in-law open a
restaurant in Washington and he soon learned he
could make a career out of it.
Hop House is located in Town Center of El Dorado Hills.
I really liked how the setting is and how it is right
at the base of the Foothills, he said. It is a beautiful
area.
Enyeart came up with the name Hop House after
taking a trip to Salt Lake City, Utah, and found himself in a little neighborhood called Sugar House.
I found this pizza place and inside there was a sign
lit up, like we do, that said Sugar House across the
wall. I thought it looked really cool and I wanted to
have a restaurant name with the word house in it,
Enyeart said. I knew the restaurant was going to be

craft-beer themed because that is what I was into and

Hop House just seemed to fit perfectly.
Originally, the restaurant was bar service only where
everyone ordered drinks and food at the bar, but over
time it evolved into full restaurant service where you
dont have to sit at the bar to order food and be served,
he said.
The more popular items on the menu are all of the
burgers, the candy bacon, street tacos and chicken
wings. In the beginning, Hop House sold grilled cheeses, but when they added burgers to the menu, they sold
better than the sandwiches, so he removed all but a few.
When you go to Hop House, every day there will be
something different on tap.
We sometimes buy one keg of something and when
it blows, we just fix it with a different beer, he said.
We have a rack of hundreds of boards with beers on
them. You can come in here every day of the week and
there will be different beer.
Enyeart has regulars that come in three to four times
a week because they know there is always something
different, he said.
Hop House has a relaxed, but fun family-friendly
atmosphere.
The playlist is set up to play 70s, 80s and 90s music
because I want people to reminisce about the high
schools days growing up, he said. My favorite thing
about the restaurant is the community and the employees. I love the people.
When asked what sets Hop House apart from others
like it, Enyeart said the food.
When I originally opened Hop House, there were
craft-beer themed places that were amazing at the craft
beer side of things, but in my opinion, the food was
lacking a little, he said. I wanted to elevate the food
and coming from a fine dining background, I want
people to come in for the food, not just the beer. I feel
like we definitely do that.
The popular restaurant is in the process of opening
their second location in Roseville on Nov. 28.

TAHOE SKIING

KICKSTART WINTER

IN TAHOE FOR THE HOLIDAYS

PHOTOS COURTESY HEAVENLY MOUNTAIN RESORT

Squaw Valley Resort

Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows is looking to once again host Tahoes longest
season after 41 feet of cumulative snowfall in the 2015-16 season. The resort
is poised to open earlier, if conditions allow. Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows has
invested over $1 million in snowmaking enhancements for 2016-17, adding
to a total of $9 million over six years. All teams at the resort have been working
around the clock to prepare for the 2016-17 season, and the Squaw Valley
Alpine Meadows snowmaking system is being deployed at every opportunity.
We are eager to kick off the season and look forward to opening the resort
as early as weather and conditions permit, said Andy Wirth, president and
CEO of Squaw Valley Ski Holdings. Setting an early opening date assured that
we are fully prepared for the 2016-17 season, and we have already seen some
impressive snowfall totals. Our staff has done an incredible job gearing up for
the season and, with help from Mother Nature, we look forward to opening the
lifts on Nov.r 23 or as early as possible, as conditions allow.
With 317 snowmaking guns and a fully automated system at Squaw Valley,
the resort can produce nine times as much as snow as it could 10 years ago. At
Alpine Meadows, improvements to snowmaking infrastructure on Kangaroo
Run will benefit guests and ski racers who frequently utilize the run for training.
At Squaw Valley, investments include three new SMI fan guns, 12 HKD low
energy guns, replacement of air and water pipelines, and upgrades to 102 automatic snowmaking hydrants, allowing the system to go online at high speeds.
These enhancements reduce the communication time from the hydrant to the
snowmaking pump house from minutes to seconds.

Sierra-at-Tahoe

For generations, Northern California skiers and snowboarders have found a winter home at Sierra-at-Tahoe, a
2,000 acre day resort just outside of South Lake Tahoe.
For expert skiers and riders, so much snowfall each
winter means there are acres and acres of perfectly spaced
old-growth Red Fir trees to explore. With innumerable
steep lines through Jacks Bowl and mandatory rock drops
in Avalanche Bowl, off-piste skiers and riders find Sierra a
powder paradise. Huckleberry Canyon, which incorporated
inside the resorts boundary line just a few seasons ago,
is a buffet of cornice drops, rock chutes, gladed runs, and
snow pillows just begging to be slashed.
Trees arent your thing? Sierra-at-Tahoe puts its heart
and soul into grooming each night
Sierra-at-Tahoe is home to some of the nations most
cutting edge terrain parks and is consistently named by
TransWorld SNOWboarding as a Top 10 Overall Resort and
Top 10 Park resort.

GLUTEN-FREE GINGERBREAD MEN COOKIES

cups gluten-free all purpose flour
teaspoon xanthum gum (only use if the blend of flour you are using
does not already contain)
teaspoon baking soda
2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1 teaspoon ground ginger
Pinch of salt
cup packed light brown sugar
6 tablespoon unsalted butter, softened
4 tablespoon molasses
1 tablespoon honey
1 egg
teaspoon vanilla extract
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
In a mixer, combine flour, baking soda, cinnamon, ginger, and salt. Add
the brown sugar and mix until there are no lumps.
Add the wet ingredients: butter, molasses, honey, egg and vanilla.
The dough will now be very sticky.
Place dough onto a piece of parchment paper and roll the dough between two pieces of parchment paper to avoid sticking to about inch.
If the dough is hard to handle, chill in freezer for 5 minutes.
Sprinkle some added flour over the top of the dough and use a gingerbread man cutter to jiggle out the cookies.
Repeat until all the dough is gone.
Place back in freezer for 5 minutes.
Place on a lined baking sheet and put on the middle rack of the oven.
Bake for 8 minutes.
The cookies will still be very soft.
Allow them to cool completely, this will allow them to solidify.
Decorate when cooled if desired, eat and enjoy!

If youre like me, you have a whole set of Christmas cookie cutters
stored ever so lovingly into the back corner of your baking pantry.
The little gingerbread men cut out always gets me excited for the
holidays. It has to be by far my favorite cookie to make. They are soft
and chewy and lets face it, just a ton of fun to eat for all ages.

Main Street in Placerville
offers an abundance of
both and much more.
Make such a visit during
the holiday season and
you will find yourself
surrounded by a great deal
of holiday spirit amidst
an array of unique retail
businesses, all of which
offer the pleasure of
hometown hospitality and
customer service.
Located just 25 east of
Folsom, a trip to Placerville can make for a great
daytrip, an extended lunch

your adventure, this local
destination is a dream
come true for those who
seek that specialty gift
or are looking to take in
some local flavor, whether it be fine dining, pub
grub, wine or craft beer
and of course homemade
sweets.
The centerpiece of an
1800s gold rush town,
Placervilles Historic
Main Street is nestled in a
valley that sits just below
the ascent to the mountains and South Lake
Tahoe. Main Street in
Placerville today continues to boast much of its
original architecture from
the infamous Bell Tower

that dangles at the west end of the street in the town that was once
known as Hangtown.
The Bell Tower is by far one of the Citys most beloved landmarks and stands today as a monument in tribute to the citys volunteer firemen. The Bell was originally placed in the tower in 1865
and was used as an alarm system for volunteer firefighters.
The many stores that surround this unique monument also have
a great history behind them and are a must visit on your trip. The
closest store to the Bell Tower is the Placerville News Company.
Family owned through three generations since 1912, this store, often known as The Newsstand to local is a great place to purchase
gifts of many varieties, from games, toys and coloring books, to
figurines and home dcor and dont count out the many periodicals,
maps and publications you can find here.
Another century old store is Placerville Hardware. This family
owned hardware store offers everything you can imagine in the way
of home repair needs and tools as well as a large section of household gifts and home decor. Today, this store continues to utilize the
original rolling ladder system to access their stock that is stacked
from floor to ceiling. No matter how unique of a special fastener or
tool you are looking for, they likely have it or can find it for you.
Combellacks is another one of the many businesses that continue
to operation well past the century mark. Established in 1898 by
William Hill Combellack, this specialty clothing store continues
to be operated by the family and offers a great share of quality

locations for mens suits and tuxedo rentals.
Randolphs Jewelers on Main Street is bannered as
the oldest jewelry store west of the Mississippi. Four
different families have owned the store in its 160 year
history. During its term it has survived the Civil War,
the Great Depression and it even burned to ground to
rise again three different times. Randolphs is one of
many great jewelry stores that can be found on your
main street stroll.
Main Street has far too many unique businesses to detail each and everyone. Whether their age is in triple or
single digits, all of them are worth a visit. The street is
very popular for those who enjoy shopping for vintage
merchandise and antiques. There is also a fair share of
shopping options for those with a sweet tooth and those
who love original art and handmade crafts. Dining
also offers abundant options, with nearly 30 eateries to
choose from with offerings from a cup of joe to a four
course dinner and everything in between.
During the holidays, Main Street in Placerville welcomes visitors with many added events and promotions.
Stagecoach rides are available during select weekends
in December. Additionally, they welcome area tree
farm travelers to stop and shop after purchasing their
Christmas Tree from a local El Dorado County grower
and bringing their receipt to select shops to receive a
special offer or discount. Late night shopping is also
available on select evenings during holiday season along
with visits with Santa, the Festival of Lights and much
more.

GNOME SCAVENGER HUNT IN PLACERVILLE

SPECIAL TO ENTERTAINER
Gnomes have been popping up all over Placerville and South Lake Tahoe since
July 4, 2014. This scavenger hunt not only engages the community, but also supports local businesses. Locations of where the gnomes are hidden are tagged and
more clues can be found on Instagram and Facebook in real time. Those who find a
gnome are encouraged to keep it for themselves and take them on their own gnome
adventure, or re-hide the gnomes for someone else to find.
Each gnome is handmade by clay and created by local artist Caitlin Thompson.
Caitlin started the PVGnomey Scavenger Hunt as a way to engage the community in
a fun activity.
It started as just a fun thing to do over the summer. I made a few and hid them
in downtown Placerville not really expecting to get any interest. Within a couple of
hours, all had been found, and I was getting messages asking when I was going
to hide more! From there it became a multi-town game, and I have started adding
seasonal figurines as interest grows, Thompson said.
Just before Halloween, Thompson was out hiding tiny clay sugar skulls around the
businesses.
Alisyn Gularte who currently lives and works in Placerville enjoys looking for
gnomes on Main Street.
The gnomes are beautifully crafted and what fun it is to see clues posted on
Instagram to then go run out and seek little gnomes. I currently have a dozen in my
collection and while I keep saying that I will re-hide them for someone else to find, I
cant seem to part with them, Gularte said.
I love how the gnomes bring out the children in us. Who doesnt love the thrill
of the hunt when the prize is a handmade mini sculpture, created to tickle your
spirits? said Sherry Tollefsrud owner of Mattywags Boutique on Main Street in
Placerville.
To find a gnome, follow PV Gnomey on Instagram and Facebook. use #PVgnomey

BORJN WINERY

orjnWinery a Mexican-American winery in the Sierra

Foothills region, not only is an undiscovered gem, but also has
a great story rich in family history. The Borjns were originally from the very small town of Paracuaro in the state of Guanajuato,
Mexico. Winemaker Isys parents arrived in the Shenandoah Valley
more than 30 years ago, starting with working various vineyard jobs
and eventually launching the very successful BorjnLabor Contracting and Vineyard Management company in 1991.
It is through growing up with extensive vineyard experience, that
Isy was handed the reigns, to the family vineyard management
business at only the age of 19. Many other winery owners in the area
felt Isy was too young to run a winery, but he quickly proved industry
insiders wrong.
BorjnVineyards approach to winemaking goes like this: They
grow all of their grapes and truly believe a great wine begins with a
great grape. The winery is also one of the very few wineries in Ama-

dor County that owns a sorting table, which greatly helps the wine making process as the table ensures only the
best whole grapes are used for the wines.
On the property, a 5,000-square-foot cellar sits a short distance from the tasting room. This separates the customer experience from the wine production area. In additional to the beautiful picnic grounds, for those who do not
want to pack in a lunch there is an authentic Mexican caf on site, where visitors can enjoy dishes such has homemade quesadillas or burritos.
What kind of wines can visitors expect to taste in the tasting room? The tasting room is open Monday through
Thursday, from 11 a.m. 5 p.m. and offers a wide selection of varietals and flights. BorjnWinery offers Sangiovese, Zinfandel, Primotivo and Barbara Reposados to start. For the wine taster looking for something a little
different, try the Bull Rider Cabernet Sauvignon, which is available in a magnum size, which is great for upcoming
holiday celebrations.
For patrons who like Zinfandel, we also recommend the Xinfandel Reserva the flagship wine of BorjnWinery
as the X represents their traditional family letter, representing both the dedication to family and to the wine.
Many local retailers also carry Borjn, this attributes to the winerys success, and conveniently, customers can
purchase the wine at six retailers in Amador County. For those who do not live in the area, Borjnwines can also
be purchased from retailers in Sacramento, Contra Costa, El Dorado and even Los Angeles counties.
The next upcoming annual event (and there are a bunch throughout the year) is the Vino Nuevo event (the last
Saturday in January), featuring musical guests, delicious Mexican food, wine sales and new releases.

AMADOR WINE

Zin-ful conduct

Amador wineries represented at prominent Zinfandel festival

BY MICHELE SMITH

hat is ZAP? Zinfandel Advocates and Producers hosts the

largest Zinfandel festival in the country with the purpose of educating their members about Zinfandel, combined
with some of the greatest winetasting events ever sponsored.
While the ZAP organization will have approximately 120
wineries pouring at the upcoming February event, the Amador
County wineries are presenting in full-force as well. Here is
what you can expect from our local northern Californias Zinfandel wineries in the Sierra Foothills. Terra dOro and president of
ZAP, winemaker Chris Leamy, not only shared the above insight,
but also gave us a sneak peek on what they will be pouring
this year. ZAP attendees can certainly expect the best from Terra
dOro at this years event, as they will be pouring their favorites

130-plus-year-old vines). Terra dOro will also be serving a cold white

Zinfandel as well for those who want to change it up.
Who are the other ZAP wineries in our area? Vino Noceto while
primarily a Sangiovese producer also does produce a small amount
of Barbera and Zinfandel wines. The 2012 OGP Zinfandel (Original
Grandpere Vineyard) is reputedly the worlds oldest Zinfandel
producing vineyard, dating back to the 1960s.
Another ZAP member is the very popular Renwood wine,
complete with a stunning tasting room. Renwood is known for
their robust, richly flavored Zinfandels, many of which come from
dry farming. The Renwoood wine list offers 13 different Zinfandel
choices to sample and purchase.
Finally yet importantly, Easton Wines is also a ZAP member with
a tasting room in the Plymouth, California Sierra Foothill region.
Easton Wines (also part of Terra Rouge) specializes in traditional
California varietals offering four Zinfandels.
In past years, ZAP was held at Fort Mason in San Francisco, where
wineries hosted tasting booths in both buildings with attendance in
the thousands. This year the ZAP organization has decided to take a
more intimate approach and limit ticket sales to 800, so attendees

WINE COLUMN

WINE ALTERNATIVE: Eggnog spiked with bourbon, rum or brandy is a holiday favorite.

TIS THE SEASON FOR

spicy holiday drinks to warm the tummy

BY ERIK LOIGOM,
WINE COLUMNIST

First of all, Id like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a safe and prosperous
New Year.
What are the traditional drinks in celebrating the festive season beyond wine and
cocktails?
Egg nog, a traditional drink of Canada and the United States, made from eggs, milk
sugar and either bourbon, rum or brandy.
Then there is the old classic favorite of hot buttered rum. It turns out that butter is
now good for, far better than the butter substitute products out there in the market.
Whereas in Europe the traditional drink is a gluhwein or mulled wine. There many
different variations depending which country you are in, but the main components are
red wine spiced with cinnamon, cardamom, ginger and oranges served hot.
In England, a tradition dating back to the 14th century is to serve an ale based hot
mulled cider called wassail.
Surprise your guests with something different as a starter, recipes for all these traditional drinks can easily found on the Internet.
Traditionally warm drinks are great for Christmas but as we move to the southern
hemisphere, where Christmas is celebrated in the middle of summer. The tendency is
to serve cool refreshing cocktails and fruit punches. The variations are endless with the
basis for the punches ranging from Champagne to fruit juices laced with any spirit of
your choice.

Making a list, checking it twice. Large kitchen, great for entertaining. Check. Double oven, stainless steel, of course. Check. Counter
space to lay out all of the wonderful food and drinks. Check. A downstairs bedroom to pile all of the coats until everyone leaves after a
night of joy and cheer. Check. Storage for all of those decorations.
Check. Clear plumbing, no leaks. Check (thankfully we got that home
inspection and our Realtor negotiated the repairs on the walkway
and leaky toilet seal). A covered patio for everyone to drink brandy,
hot chocolate or an espresso while enjoying the view and wondering
how 2016 could have slipped by so quickly. Check. Oh yes, dont
forget the new return address labels. Check.
Folsom is a great place to live and visit. Have this years party at
your house. Theres always something to do in Folsom during the
holiday time. The annual tree lighting ceremony is very festive.
Come by the skating rink on Dec. 2 and join in. Do your Christmas
shopping all around town, from the Palladio to Old Town. For a truly
unique Folsom holiday event, do the Historic Folsom Holiday Home
Tour on Dec. 9-10 that showcases nine historic sites beautifully
decorated for the holiday. Or just catch the latest family movie at one
of the awesome theaters in the area while dinner cooks (a tradition
in my family).

The local real estate market feels like Christmas all year round.
As we near the end of 2016, it looks like a strong finish. To put it in
perspective, in 2009, in Folsom, there were 700 home sales with a
median price of $371,500. In 2011, there were 885 home sales with
a median price of $315,000. And year-to-date (through Oct. 31) for
2016, 933 homes have sold in Folsom at a median sales price of
$465,000. Homes are selling faster at an average of 32 days for sold
homes while homes sell for a higher percentage rate at 99.4 percent
of list price.
So as my family and I enjoy this holiday season, if you see us in the
area, be sure to stop and say hi. you might find us at our favorites.
My wife Lynne really likes Viscontis. My younger daughter is partial
to Aloha Sushi and shopping with her friends at Palladio. My oldest
daughter loves Dimple (she works there). And me? Ill eat everywhere and love them all. Habit. Sacramento Pizza Co. Land ocean. La
Fiesta. Bacchus House. In-N-Out. A great Christmas gift for me? Gift
cards to Folsom restaurants!
The holidays are almost as festive as being a Realtor in Folsom.
Helping people solve their real estate needs to fit their changing
lifestyle is a wonderful feeling. Buyers have their wish list. They tell
Santa they would like a fairly new home, near the bike paths, great
schools, with a view. Oh, and move-in ready and within the budget.
Sellers tell Santa that they want an all-cash offer, at asking price,
close 10 days after their holiday party, and as-is. Ho! Ho! Ho!
I just put on my Santas helper suit and talk with sellers and buyers
about these topics and more all the time. With proper planning and
a good Realtor (luckily, I know a really good one), you can smoothly
get to your next stage in life.

Gracious entertainer
5,448-SQUARE-FOOT SERRANO COUNTRY CLUB HOME
BY ART GARCIA | PHOTOS ARE SPECIAL TO THE ENTERTAINER

Theres essentially nothing missing from this magnificent approximately 5,448-squarefoot, five bedroom and four and a half bath estate on nearly half an acre in the prestigious Serrano Country Club in El Dorado Hills, except perhaps strolling violinists.
The home is designed for gracious entertaining indoors and outside. Entering through
the grand foyer with custom-designed barrel ceiling and gently curved archways, the
home office is complemented with gleaming hardwood floors, floor-to-ceiling windows,
plantation shutters and built-in cabinetry.
The formal dining room is bright and open with elegant tray ceiling and extensive crown molding, while the wine cellar provides plenty of storage for your favorite
varietals, said Mary Lagomarsino, sales agent for Pat Seide Group at Coldwell Banker
Residential Brokerage in El Dorado Hills.
A 24-foot ceiling draws in a flood of natural light, illuminating the elegance of the
great room that features a massive stone fireplace and views of towering oaks, she said.

Entertaining continues outdoors onto the private loggia

with fireplace from the spacious great room.
The resident chef will be inspired by the high-end triple
Wolf ovens and six-burner stove with warming drawer,
dual dishwashers, extra prep sink at the serving/seating
bar, generous furniture-grade cabinets with soft closing
doors, walk-in pantry and butlers pantry with glass-door
cabinets.
Welcome each morning in the sunlight-infused breakfast nook with great views of the surrounding greenbelt
or enjoy a quiet evening in the luxurious main floor
master retreat with its romantic precast stone fireplace and
recessed lighting.
The quiet sitting area is a tranquil escape at the end of
the day and views of the natural beauty beyond, as well as
offering private access to the covered loggia, swimming
pool andspa, Lagomarsino said. Relax and unwind in
the spa-like master bath with sunken jetted tub, dual
vanities and make-up table, walk-in shower with multiple
showerheads and room-sized walk-in closet.
An intricately designed wrought iron railing leads up
the staircase to the second floor balcony where the massiveness of the great room is on display. The large upstairs
bonus/game room includes a sink, wine refrigerator and
beveled glass cabinets.
One of the four bedrooms on this level has access to
a remote balcony patio with striking views. The second
master suite has a huge walk-in closet, jetted tub and
walk-in shower.
Another of the upstairs bedrooms is a suite as well. All
baths have upgraded fixtures and granite counters.

THEATER

STAGE SUSTAINED
SUTTER STREET THEATRE CELEBRATES 10 YEARS

BY RACHEL ZIRIN | PHOTOS BY BILL SULLIVAN

utter Street Theatre celebrated 10 years with an evening of reenacting songs and past performances as well as announcing their 11th season on Nov. 3.
The event included food from various Folsom restaurants such as Strings, BJs Restaurant and Brewhouse and
Petes Restaurant and Brewhouse. After dessert, there were comedy bits and songs from the past 10 years of shows.
The theater was originally opened in 2006 by Connie Mockenhaupt and Mike Jimena. Before they started the theater,
they worked with El Dorado Musical Theatre assisting in directing and technical directing, Jimena said.
The chamber came to us and asked if we were interested in opening a theater in Folsom, he said. So I told them to find
us a place and they did.
At the time, the couple was concerned about how it would take off and they had a lot of inventory of Star Wars, Disney
and pop culture, he said.

52 | FOLSOM LAKE ENTERTAINER

FolsomEntertainerDecember2016.indd 52

11/25/16 1:07 PM

During the day, we had a store and everything was

on kiosks with wheels. By night, we would move the
kiosks out, lift up part of the stage and it would be a
theater, Jimena said.
The store was moved down the street which is now
located next door to Peach Caf, on Sutter Street,
and at present, the theater is a full-time theater.
The first show the couple hosted was called Tell
me on a Sunday and it was a one-man show because
it was the only thing they could mount together
quickly enough when they originally opened, Jimena
said.
Jimena said his favorite thing about the theater is
that everyone is like family.
We always joke that we dont hire actors, we adopt
them, Mockenhaupt said. They come and they love
being here. Its a fun place and its very comfortable.
Mockenhaupt said they have had more than 800
actors over the course of their 10 years as well as
more than 300 productions.
Some of the productions include dramas, comedies, musicals and originals such as Escanaba in the
Moonlight, Spamalot, 13: The Musical, Anything Goes and Willy Wonka.
No matter what performance you go to see at the
Sutter Street Theatre, you are guaranteed entertainment and a good time, Mockenhaupt said.
Our whole mission is that we want to entertain
the world, we dont want to change it, she said. If
someone comes away changed, great, but its our
goal. We just want everyone to have a good time.
The couple also has a hidden gem a theater
academy called Theatre Production and Technical
Academy. The academy offers classes for all ages in
vocal, dance theater and a little bit of everything,
Mockenhaupt said.
While the couple has gotten offers to open a second theater, they said they are never leaving Sutter
Street.
