The President Report

A Letter from the President
Dear Friends,
In April of 2016, I became the
IU Southeast Student Body
President. Since then, I have
gone to work to represent the
voice of the student body in the
SGA
Senate,
in
the
Chancellors office, and at the
Faculty-Senate meeting.
In the SGA Senate, I worked with two senators to write a
legislation to install a water filling station in the main floor
of the library. The library took up our recommendation
and bought and install the water filling station. In the
Chancellors office, I made a few recommendations to
him, and one of them was to allow our vending machines
to take debit and credit cards. I am proud to say that
vending machines around campus can now do that. In the
Faculty-Senate, I worked with the Faculty-Senate
President to restart the conversation on a Fall Break, a
proposal that has been voted down every over the years. I
am proud to say that the Faculty-Senate is much more
receptive of this proposal, given what our students said in
our Fall Break survey. The proposal may be up for a vote
at our next Faculty-Senate meeting in January you can
rest assure that I will speak on your behalf and push the
Faculty-Senate to approve of this proposal.
In the spring, we will continue our work. But we will also
use the spring to bring about much needed reforms to the
Student Government Association. On day one of the
spring semester, I will establish the IUS SGA
Constitutional Review Committee to review and revise
our constitution. The change will call for a better SGA that

Office of the Student Body President

is well representative of the student body and adequately

meets the demands of the student body. One of the
changes I will be advocating for in the constitution is
changing our executive leadership team. Instead of the
president dominating the executive branch that is
composed of the president, the vice president, the chief of
staff, and the secretary of internal and external affairs, the
executive will be changed to the President, the Vice
President for Academic Affairs, the Vice President for
Student Affairs, the Vice President for Administrative
Affairs, and the Vice President for Advancement. Each of
these positions will have listed duties and will work with
their respective Vice Chancellors who oversees such unit
on campus. We will also change the senate so that
members in the senate will be elected by you and represent
a specific school. Each school will be capped at three
senators. Senators will serve on SGA committees,
Faculty-Senate committees, and attend information
session in their respective schools. This will change the
governing of the SGA.
As president, I am looking beyond this semester and this
coming spring semester. Id like to see a different SGA in
four years. That is why I will be working with SGA
members and the student body to craft a long term
document that will serve as a master plan and a roadmap
for where the SGA should be going in four years. This plan
is what I term IUS-SGA2020, a vision of an SGA that is
reformed and a true force for good on campus. Our SGA
is changing. But these changes will not all happen
overnight. But with our SGA members and the student
body, we will change the SGA to better represent and
serve the study body.

A semester of action
Friends, this semester has been one of action. An SGA is
truly representative of the student body when it is active.
This semester, weve been active. We held a Meet Your
Student Government Event in each school to solicit the
views of students regarding the SGA and the campus;
wrote a recommendation bill for a water filling station in
the library; restarted the conversation on a Fall Break;
sponsored an organizations event; and will be hosting my
State of the Student Body Address on December 1st. All
this have been to show the student body that the SGA is
here. Our students gave us great comments at our Meet
Your Student Government Event which weve compiled
into a document. The main floor of the library now has a
water filling station. The Academic Policy Committee of
the Faculty-Senate is reviewing the Fall Break proposal.
In fact, the Fall Break proposal may be up for a vote in
January. The organizations event we sponsored was a
success. At my State of the Student Body Address, I will
cover all weve achieved, what we hope to achieve next
semester, and whats my vision for the SGA for the year
2020.
Friends, I know that it is not a lot that weve done. But we
are just getting started. The SGA will continue to do more.
We will look into revamping our calculator rental
program, sponsor more campus events, solicit the views of
the student body, and make recommendations to the
campus administrators that will benefit the student body.
Weve been tasked with the responsibilities to represent
the student body and we will continue to do that.

A semester of engagement and

outreach
Friends, this years SGA has been reaching out to and
engaging with students on campus. Put it simple, I have
made SGA engagement and outreach the forefront of my
presidency, because I believe in the voice of the student
body and because I want students to know that the SGA is
here and is working for them. When it was brought to my
attention that a student wanted a water filling station in the
main floor of the library, I took up the proposal and
worked with two senators to write a legislation on that.
When the SGA had its Meet Your Student Government
Event, I emailed all students to come out and speak to the
SGA. When I decided for the SGA to restart the
conversation on the Fall Break, I understood that SGA
alone cannot convince the school to give our students a
fall. Understanding this, my office sent a survey to all
students through the Office of Institutional Effectiveness
to show that they want a Fall Break and to give their
reasons for it.
Beyond emails, Ive asked my office to utilize the social
media. Our students are on social media and if we want to
let the students know what the SGA is doing and to get
their opinions, we need to utilize our Social Medias to
their fullest potential. With the help of Julia King, my
Social Media Professional, weve been utilizing our
Facebook and recently created an Instagram account. It is
my hope that through these, we will engage more with the
student body and with the community. The SGA is
improving every day and we want the student body to be
a part of the change that is happening.

It was important to me what the Student Body had to say about a Fall
Break.
