Fire Retardants and Anti-Corrosions Effects of Surface Coating
Material Utilizing Nanocomposites
Rationale
According to Bureau of Fire and Protection, the numbers of fire last 2015 reached a record
high of 17,138 fire incidents in the Philippines which is continuously increasing up to now. Most
of the causes of fire incidents are from the construction materials that are used for some
establishments, houses, and etc. Materials like wood, metals and cements are the most common
construction materials. Conversely, high combustility was observed with these materials which
indicates higher tendency to burn.
On the other hand, there are substances that reduces flammability of fuels or delays their
combustion which are called as fire retardants. Fire retardants can be in a form of coating
(surface coating) which is applied to the surface of an object like some construction materials
such as metals, woods, and cements, and after coating it, coated materials can easily resist the
flame. To have an coating as fire retardant, there is a substance that is possible to be a resistant
because of its some capabilities.
Nanocomposite is a multiphase solid material where one of the phases has one, two or three
dimensions of less than 100 nanometers (nm), or structures having nano-scale repeat distances
between the different phases that make up the material. Nanocomposites are found in nature, for
example in the structure of the abalone shell and bone. The physical, chemical and biological
properties of nano materials differ from the properties of individual atoms and molecules or bulk
matter. Utilization of nanocomposite as an fire retardant coating may be possible due to its
possibility to control the fundamental properties of materials, such as their melting temperature,
