ASSIGNMENT 1 (INDIVIDUAL)
1.0 Introduction
The studied area is located around Damai, where it is located 3.5 km from Kota Kinabalu
city. Now the studied are, Damai is very close to amenities such as markets, offices, rest and
recreations places and police station. Even though the studied area is close to amenities and is
provided by many types of facilities and infrastructure, the pedestrians in Damai is considered
quite low compared to the pedestrians in area Kota Kinabalu city.
What is pedestrian mobility? Now pedestrian mobility refers to a certain location for
example areas of city or town where it is only reserved for pedestrian only used. Which in this
case refer to as pedestrianisation. Pedestrianisation aims is to provide better accessibility and
mobility for pedestrians (Kwan L. H., 2004). Some of the ways to provide better accessibility and
mobility for pedestrian are base on the design, technical and social environment of that certain area.
For design to ease the accessibility and mobility for pedestrian, examples are walkways, pedestrians
crossings, traffic interactions, handicap (OKU) access, rest and recreations, parking and many more
are one of the examples. While for technical accessibility, fire fighting, electric supply, water supply,
drains and many more are one of the examples which is important for daily life for that area. Lastly
is the social environment of that certain area where public transportation, dry and wet market,
safety and security, bus stop and shelters, places of worships and many more. This is more towards
the easy access of pedestrians towards socializing.

2.0 Objective
a) To suggest any improvements into that certain area which is Damai.
3.0 Suggestion
To improve the pedestrian's mobility in that certain area, walkways are the most
essential to improve the pedestrian's mobility. Why walkways? By having walkways in that area
of either city or town, this can help increase the factor of safety for the pedestrians from getting
killed in traffic clashes with vehicles or motorcycles. Now the benefits of having walkways is that

it will surely provide walkways that are separated from the travel lanes. Now the walkways
should be present on both sides of the street. Also, the provided walkway will be much better if
the separation between the walkway for pedestrian and the roadway is widen since it will be
more comfortable for the both sides of the users of the walkway and roadway. Not only that, by
providing a comfortable walkway, this will surely increase the transportation of an individual's
whom may not able to drive a vehicle.
Another way is to provide paved shoulders in that studied area. Why paved shoulders?
Paved shoulders provide numerous safety benefits for pedestrians. Now the benefits of having
paved shoulders are it reduces the numerous types of crashes such as pedestrians crashes,
improves the roadway drainage and provides extreme comfort for cyclist. Now this will also
provide emergency stops for road users (example is broken down vehicles), safety for
pedestrians to used and provides space for variable sign board.
4.0 Conclusion
As a conclusion, the study done which is to improve the studied location will surely
benefits the pedestrians accessibility and mobility. The improvement will not only be beneficial
towards the pedestrian's area, but also will be able to attract many more pedestrians.
