COmmanders Report
Compatriots,
I would like to say Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to everyone as we enter into this
Holiday season. The month of November was another successful and active month for our camp. It
started with Veterans Day celebrations at the Virginia War Memorial and Chesterfield County
historical courthouse. Thanks to Blair for presenting our camp wreath at the events and to all the camp
members that attended all the memorials around Richmond.
Tommy and I were able to pick up a 25ft flag pole for the UDC memorial in Riverview cemetery.
We were able to get the flag pole off of a Craigslist posting by Richard and Ava Oulton. He was made
to take down his flag pole in his neighborhood because it was deemed a nuisance of all things just
deplorable. He flew the American and Marine Corp flag in commemoration of his fellow Marines killed
in Vietnam. We salute Richard and his Marines for their service and sacrifice and are gracious that the
flag pole will once again be used to honor ladies of the UDC. You can read Richards story online at
Going to jail for flying old glory.
Clayton Shepherd and the Friends of Shockoe Hill Cemetery held a headstone recovery and
resetting November 12. I was lucky to help Clayton, Tommy and others for a few hours and it was a
very rewarding feeling. If you have time to help at Shockoe Hill or any local cemetery to bring life back
to these remarkable places it will be well worth your time.
I want to thank John Henry Taylor for his hard work with preparing the forms and getting the
records together of 13 soldiers to be honored at Hollywood Cemetery. The Camps hard work during the
Chesterfield county fair and Field days of the past has helped to make these headstones possible. We
continue to honor the charge by insuring these men have a visible remembrance of their service. I also
want to thank John Henry, Bill Ward, and Tommy Clinger for the continued work on updating the list
Bill developed when he worked with the Southern Soldiers Remembrance fund to insure if soldiers
have headstones or if they currently do not they are updated to insure we mark everyone.
I look forward to seeing everyone at the Christmas Party Monday Dec 5 located at Providence
United Methodist Church, 901 S Providence Rd. We will start dinner at 6pm with our program and
special guest Amy Ladd and friends starting at 7pm. Please contact any of the officers of the camp if
you have not already with any dish or desert you plan on bringing and how many guest you may bring.
See you all there.
Respectfully
Commander

Ken Norman

Greetings Compatriots all,

The time is fast approaching that we celebrate the birth of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, in a small town called,
Bethlehem, in a country so very far away. Unfortunately, too many of our young folks think of Christmas in the terms
of what will we get for Christmas instead of what can I give for Christmas. The custom of giving gifts at this time
of the year is, in a form, the reenactment of the wise men bringing gifts to the new born Christ Child so many years
ago. We continue this practice whenever we do something for those less fortunate than ourselves in this way, we too
are giving a gift to our Lord Jesus that will be pleasing in his sight.
Our list of sick and distressed Compatriots is continuing to shrink and with continued prayers all of our Compatriots
and family members will be whole again.
Compatriot Oren Kevin Mowels (Kevin) is completing his last phase of chemo treatments. As we all know, chemo will
sap your strength and energy and leave you tired the majority of the time. Kevin is holding up well and expects to be
with us shortly. Please keep him in your thoughts and prayers for a complete and lasting healing.
Lisa Marie Clinger (Marie) is progressing well with her physical therapy after her major hip surgery.
Compatriot Nicholas Colin Jennings (Nick) has completed his time on the night shift and is now on the day shift he
will now be able to attend our meetings. It is good to have Nick back again with us.
Compatriot Dennis Wayne Marshall (Dennis) has retired and we are looking forward to having Dennis back with us full
time.
Compatriot Robert M. Morris (Robert) is continuing to heal up from his recent back surgery.
Our oldest grandson, Ryan, will be deployed to the Middle East this week with his National Guard unit. He will not be
returning until next summer. We will be praying for his safe return.
Please keep these brothers and sisters in your prayers. Compatriots, especially at this time of year, live in peace, and
may the God of Peace and love delight to dwell with and bless you. Amen.
Your obedient servant,

John Henry Taylor
